Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

And pfft it's gone.

Surprise surprise turns out our little trolly visitor was a PBP.

Personally I'd have preferred to have seen him kicked out and the thread kept, as I think a lot of women don't truly believe there are men that batshit crazy out there.

boatyardblues · 20/08/2020 07:32

Shame. I was enjoying the cheese chat.

Winesalot · 20/08/2020 07:51

I am a little disappointed. Did they really have own website because what people were posting from the site and the posts were the same tone. Either way, it was eye opening to see the completely detached from reality or any expression of compassion for anybody, rhetoric being rolled out. Only contempt.

I do wish the thread could have stayed as it pointed to the population that is doing exactly what we have been warning about. But obviously that was the entire point of the visit.

Still. I learned two new terms and I see there is a thread about one new term Tw cuties so I am off to read that. And thank you to those who archived the Reddit board. It is not one I wish to visit again soon though.

I may have updated the ‘never happens’ thread as I was well advised Wink

Thanks Humpty. You really deserve a drink. Gin ?

FannyCann · 20/08/2020 08:12

Crikey Humphrey that update. Shock I haven't time or the stomach to google all the many words I didn't recognise.

I liked this bit though.

"I have asked on feminist subs if i should call myself a feminist and they just banned me, i take that as a no."

It’s almost Thursday evening here, so pretty much the weekend right? So I’ll take a Gin with thanks Grin

Crikey o’Reilly! That never happens does it? Except there and just then. I’ve had an eye opening few days what with the transbians and a some other crazy bits and bats I saw on Twitter. I’ve lived a sheltered life. That person got what they wanted though, the thread was derailed and deleted and the frightening reality of it back into the cave.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2020 08:42

That person got what they wanted though, the thread was derailed and deleted and the frightening reality of it back into the cave.

But by keeping the thread active they alerted more of us to the existence of that cave - probably not just FWR regulars. Keeping a thread active in the evening when there's not much else in active convos will doubtless get many casual readers. So I'm not sure that was a great tactic if they wanted obscurity. In fact, the thread had no replies for the best part of an hour until the PBP showed up (they must have some sort of alert set I suppose?).

Well done you. This is why I love the women on this board.
Mammatino · 20/08/2020 08:52

I wondered how the hell he got an alert to that being up there too. Hats off to the OP for bringing that up and you are right it got discussed and showed people we aren’t making it up, there are some terrifying things happening out there. I loved all the cheese comments too I added something other than cheddar to my shopping list. 😁

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2020 08:55

Blimey, humpty.Shock

ThePankhurstConnection · 20/08/2020 08:56

I just realised which thread it was - I knew who Vintologi was and was swithering as to whether to say it on the thread but I thought I would let the crazy play out, people need to know that sort of thinking exists . Should have known it would be deleted. I agree with those who say it would be good to let these things stand. It is a form of grim education, women need to know what they are up against.

What cheese did you add?

Also I discovered a place that sells popped cheese in bags (seriously) google Cheesies (good sprinkled on salad). That is my contribution since I missed the cheese talk.

Fortunately various posters googled the name fairly early on, so yes, we did know exactly who we were dealing with - but like you say, sometimes it can be educational to let the crazy play out.

I don't say this lightly, but my spidey senses say this is a man who could be very dangerous to very many people in a real-life way.

ThePankhurstConnection · 20/08/2020 09:04

I think you are right about him Diana - and I know the women here are intelligent enough and yes, jaded by "visitors" here enough to be wary.

SocialMedea · 20/08/2020 09:08

Was it Diana that came up with the smashing idea to hide the thread? Worked a treat. Will do that more.

Thanks, Diana. xx

Thanks for this ThePankhurstConnection.
I've just googled and will be buying some! I thought cheese popcorn was the business but these look even better!

Winesalot · 20/08/2020 09:33

And yet, I was hugely interested in getting fed the information rather than me sending traffic to their site (nothing quite like feeding a fetishist's dream in doing that) and to the board.

I agree, that poster seems very dangerous to whichever community they belonged to. I was never quite sure. It was like watching a psychopath discussing how to establish their view of world order.

I fell asleep at midnight, I did wonder what might have gone down after. Since it was your morning then Humpty, did you persist?

Winesalot · 20/08/2020 09:37

Cheesies

I saw this and immediately felt I needed to stick Cheezels on my fingers. I really miss Cheezels. I wonder if Boris' team when they are negotiating the Tim Tams to be sent to the UK will include Twisties and Cheezels... there are no substitutes (although Italian Fonzies are not too bad).

ItsLateHumpty · 20/08/2020 09:45

Nope, I sat on my hands after we talked gin Halo but I did check back and to be honest the traffic had stopped because we had what we needed and the rhetoric was getting repetitive. The now known PBP Vintologi had to come back and bump the thread but no one bit - well, except MN Grin

Winesalot · 20/08/2020 10:03

ahhh! Thanks. So the troll went hungry and lonely.

There was some imaginative uses of 'those being deprived of their rights to sex' proposed towards the end. I thought maybe some spirits were involved there too.

So ..... Four Pillars is a good gin. Particularly with a slice of orange or a frozen mandarin segment.

I failed massively to take my own advice though Grin. Was like watching a slow motion car crash - couldn't stop myself watching. Also the combination of extraordinary depths of stupidity coupled with an unshakeable belief that he was a genius. (I had a student like that once - more fun to watch on t'interweb than to have to deal with in RL).
Winesalot · 20/08/2020 10:09

Diana I have a friend whose brother goes off his meds occasionally and is convinced that he is the president or god. I did wonder.

DianasLasso · 20/08/2020 13:08

Incoming "what about the menz" for the screenshots. Painfully naive but nasty with it.
