Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

ItsLateHumpty · 20/06/2020 15:04

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

Ovarit.com is excellent, it's nice to be able to speak the truth, and the admin team on there are radfems. Just saying!

It's a good point about journalists looking for info here, but it's getting to the point where we can't even put information journalists might be interested in, here. Maybe the journalists should check out Ovarit too.

highame · 18/08/2020 16:01

Kantastic 😁 well they ought to be on the ball, fingers crossed

Ovarit is great. I joined fairly recently, I'm seriously impressed at what they've achieved in a short space of time.

It's invite only at the moment whilst they are still in beta testing (if you have an established Spinster or Twitter account you can PM them for a code).

I would advise everyone to join Ovarit and/or Spinster when they can. Not just to support a female focused venture but as a solid back up to meet other women including some excellent women long since banned from here.

DeaconBoo · 18/08/2020 21:53

@highame

Just remember, if really good, knowledgeable posters leave, that's job done. Journalists come onto this board they get a lot of information and that's good for us - stick with it. Otherwise we're all doomed
Agreed. Don't leave, everyone! I do have other places I pop into from time to time though.
ArabellaScott · 18/08/2020 22:39

Yes, god, please all the clever women don't go. I'll be stuck here trying to foist confusing invertebrate videos on puzzled newbies.

OnOvarit · 18/08/2020 22:43

I have 5 invite codes to Ovarit!

DM me if you want one.

(Anyone who has been on Ovarit for a while and has reached level 5 as a poster, you also have invite codes.)

Clymene · 18/08/2020 22:47

I will join Ovarit. But I think this is an important space because it's mainstream.

I have been wondering where Michelle was. I would be really sad if she were banned. I think other women will come to fill the space she vacated though. We are legion and more and more women are saying that they've had enough. We are half the population. We have power and we will prevail.

FloresTorres · 18/08/2020 22:56

Please keep posting here also oh thinking women. We need your sunlight to fall on important issues, so the rest of us are aware, and can tell others.
Flowers for all absent sisters.

GazookGaboot · 18/08/2020 23:18

What's happening??? First one thread-- gone. OK. Too hypothetical, possibly. But now what's happened to ahem women face children's lit appreciation without parental consent etc please? Just trying to catch up, and it's gone as well. Too true? Too much sunlight?

So much scorch. Such truth.

OvaHere · 18/08/2020 23:52

Yes. to be clear I wasn't asking anyone to leave here. It's just nice to have other places to go to connect with former MNetters and to support female led spaces.
CivilCervix · 19/08/2020 01:14

How can it be that there are so many spaces on which the worst sorts of misogyny can be shared and violent porn can be posted, but yet a site for women on which women share lived experience of sexual trauma and mental health and how that affects their perception of the world, of institutions and of policy is subject to routine reprimands and censorship? Could it be patriarchy?

OnOvarit · 19/08/2020 11:47

I seem to have "levelled up" again on Ovarit so have a bunch more codes. Again, message me if you want one!

By the way, someone on there has suggested organising a group for former Mumsnetters. Like others I would hate to see this forum abandoned completely. But the censorship is intensifying.

ThePurported · 19/08/2020 15:44

We need a sign for Incoming! forced feminization enthusiast
Any ideas?

DianasLasso · 19/08/2020 15:50

Archive the relevant reddit sub to the "this never happens" thread, then let the thread die the death?

Deliriumoftheendless · 19/08/2020 16:15

Agree although I have contributed but planned my response before the detail and it doesn’t reply to any details.

Deliriumoftheendless · 19/08/2020 16:15

Details? Derails.

ArabellaScott · 19/08/2020 16:20

Ive archived.

DianasLasso · 19/08/2020 16:25

Ta!

wellbehavedwomen · 19/08/2020 21:30

Reminders of precisely why single sex spaces are so blessedly important do serve a purpose, I suppose. If looking for silver linings.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 19/08/2020 21:34

Sorry, i was still engaging But I won’t now 😀

She says!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 19/08/2020 21:36

Epic fail

wellbehavedwomen · 19/08/2020 21:54

The forced teaming, while playing linguistic games to assert social dominance... it's classic male-patterned abusive behaviour. Attention is oxygen, in this context.

There's a slew of evidence contra to the claims - not least the gender clinicians who gave evidence on the very disturbing situation around prisons to Parliament, and then of course the various prison reform charities have written pieces on this, and the inimitable Rhona Hotchkiss has spoken very movingly on it, too. We know the stats. We've given them often enough before. But it's not about evidence, is it? It's about attention from women - negative or otherwise. I very much believe that that's the appeal. I'm happy to engage with people who think very differently to me: have done on here many times, and have plenty of respect for all manner of views, online and off. But I don't think this is about the stated views at all. Not really. And the framing of psych drugs as worse than rape is intentionally trying to raise a reaction. It has to be, given the posts over the past few days.

Some people will do anything for female attention, especially when they can patronise, belittle and demean those women, even verbally. It's catnip, to those from a certain self-defined demographic.

ArabellaScott · 19/08/2020 21:57

There's scant mention of our rather outre new poster on the fruit farms. Apparently 'box of frogs' would be a fairly accurate description.

wellbehavedwomen · 19/08/2020 22:01

For the avoidance of doubt: when I say, "certain demographic' I categorically do NOT mean trans people. (Thought I should specify that for when the relevant post falls down the page, in case that being the case then gets lost.)

EchoCardioGran · 20/08/2020 00:55

That's made me feel quite ill. Along with too much cheese.
