Bunbury's guide to community disruptors part 5

ItsLateHumpty · 20/06/2020 15:04

The useful Bunbury Guide to Spotting Community Disruptors is constantly evolving.

The best research and advice is not to engage with community disruptors and trolls. As ever, if you suspect troll activity, report it to MNHQ.

Remember our monitors would like to silence us by fair means or foul.

This is a continuation of the Public Service Announcement thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3691023-Bunburys-guide-to-community-disruptors-part-4

If and when you see threads plopped into FWR, especially a curious repeat of well worn topics, maybe check for poster history before engaging. AS is your friend.

There are a number of posts/posters/threads that are reproduced on Twitter or Facebook to foment controversy using screen shots & flagging to either MNHQ to have threads or posters deleted.. Sometimes, it’s used to approach commissioning editors with ideas for articles. It’s a tiresome tactic that we always have community disruptor posters who themselves post the comments that they then highlight elsewhere as purported evidence of racism, religious intolerance, anti-men sentiments, or transphobia.

Some helpful links can be found in the ‘Break it Down for me’ and ‘It never happens’ threads but in essence FermatsTheorem recommended “that in the absence of a block/hide poster button, I suggest the following strategy (given that you're talking to the lurkers).

Do not name check the sealion. Instead, respond to a depersonalised paraphrase:

"It is sometimes erroneously suggested that blah. Blah is wrong for the following reasons (short and pithy). If you need more information re. debunking blah, here's a link."

Then (this next step is important to combat derailment) go back up thread to the last useful contribution to the discussion, make sure you do name check that contributor, and pick up the discussion from that point.”

Go well Witches Gin

I'd just like to say FFS too.

ThePurported · 18/08/2020 11:40

I'm sure there are hurt feelings whenever discussion arises from specific real-life events, but so what? Silencing the affected women is not a neutral act.

Pertella · 18/08/2020 11:46

@Mollscroll

What the hell? Just got deleted again for the third time. None of my deletions have been for anything that is expressly banned in the Talk Guidelines. Or were not banned at the time of my post. Maybe I'm out of here...
Some FACTS are inconvenient doncha know Wink

@ItsLateHumpty

Updating from 23rd July (see *)

FWR is a no go zone for...

irreverence
sarcasm
humour
depreciation (of anything except women/woman/female)
recipes
repeating accepted mantras
peaking
acronyms beginning with A
piss taking (see humour I guess?)
biscuit emoji
yawns
bless
*observations of our oppression
*recounting our stories (if they make some people look bad)
*mods, mod’ding, FWR talk guidelines

We must be more...

depreciative (of self)
serious
subservient
supporting
supplicant
polite
measured
self censoring
space saving
speak less, learn more
meek
mild
accomodating
accomplished (in areas proscribed)
*forgetful
*mindful

How about a thread?: We might be ok with this? My delusional life as a potato. Locked up in solitary on a mushroom farm, with only a radish in charge of my agricultural well being . A hypothetically true story (caveat:NARALT)

p.s. I've avoided mention of carrots, as I'm concerned that "don't be a smart arse about carrots" has gone into the rulz whilst i've been typing.

Take it easy out there.Flowers

BovaryX · 18/08/2020 12:17

Hi,
I haven't seen several posters for a while. I hope TheRealMcKenna and ProdigalKitten and Michelle are around?

No you can’t do carrots

No taking the piss out of anything that is longer than it is wide...very freudian

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/08/2020 12:50

Or 🍆

Obvs

nauticant · 18/08/2020 13:35

Gosh, I wonder what was wrong with the Hachette thread? I didn't get to see the later posts.

Either posters there were being mean or the monitors are out in force and the moderators are being very compliant to do their bidding.

highame · 18/08/2020 13:42

I'm wondering that too. I had wondered what would happen if JKR said something about women, and would that cause a conflict for them.

It could be that it was incorrect. I wonder who posted it? can anyone remember?

DialSquare · 18/08/2020 13:42

Not in the spirit of the site apparently.

I didn't see anything meriting thread deletion. If there had been a mean post, surely that post would be deleted.

I think we can add discussion of organisations pressured into re-education programmes to the list of things that must not be discussed.

I was the OP of the Hachette thread. I posted a link to the press release, and some excerpts from the press release.

AbsintheFriends · 18/08/2020 13:47

I commented on how much speaking up for women must have cost her personally and professionally. Which I think is entirely in the spirit of FWR. As is discussing how big corporations are controlling the discourse by making public statements like this.

DialSquare · 18/08/2020 13:47

Should we be taking this step up of targeting as a good sign? Are certain groups getting worried?

BlackWave · 18/08/2020 13:50

It's never a good sign when women are censored.

highame · 18/08/2020 13:51

Thanks itsallgoingtobefine

I suppose they could argue that it wasn't about women, however it does link to JKR but dialsquare do you know what 'not in the spirit of the site' means?

I don't know what anything means any more highame! I refreshed the thread and that was the message that came up.
DialSquare · 18/08/2020 13:59

@BlackWave

It's never a good sign when women are censored.
True. But if what we are saying wasn't a worry for certain groups, they wouldn't be trying to censor us. We just need to be extra careful about getting the message out in a way we can't be censored. Even though that is becoming more and more difficult by the day.
BlackWave · 18/08/2020 14:05

They may be worried, but if that just translates into even more heavy-handed moderation of women, communication just gets harder and harder.

I already am careful about the rules I know about. But the range of rules I don't know about until after the email is getting wider and wider by the day.

Anyhow, I'm on two strikes this week, so I'd better shut up for the next five.

NonHypotheticalLurkingParent · 18/08/2020 14:18

Maybe the moderators have all recently had curated interactions?

highame · 18/08/2020 15:01

The worst case is, they are getting even better organised.

Deliriumoftheendless · 18/08/2020 15:24

I have a deletion on the LOL thread and I can’t for the life of me see why, I don’t say much of interest.

Deliriumoftheendless · 18/08/2020 15:25

Sorry- it’s the MAP one got confused what threads I’m reading there.

ItsLateHumpty · 18/08/2020 15:32

@BovaryX

I’m not sure about the first two, but I posted about @Michelleoftheresistance earlier on in this thread (12th Aug) as I’d noticed she went missing (30th July) after complaining talking about FWR guidelines.

Angryresister ha! Can’t believe I forgot “kind” 🤦‍♀️

Just remember, if really good, knowledgeable posters leave, that's job done. Journalists come onto this board they get a lot of information and that's good for us - stick with it. Otherwise we're all doomed
