Says:

TONIGHT: #Newsnight has seen evidence that staff at England's only children’s NHS gender clinic say their concerns over the care provided were ‘shut down’.

Clinicians reported worries that some patients were referred onto a gender transitioning pathway too quickly.

At the end of the piece Kirsty directs viewers to the BBC action line page where support can be found.

This is what viewers will find there:

The Tavistock management seem in complete denial still. Imagine if eating disorder clinics behaved like this?

Link at the end to BBC page that links amongst other orgs, to guess who? Mermaids.. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/5zvRZW3yRHjqczdwd0gv3S0/information-and-support-gender-identity

Jintyfer · 18/06/2020 23:22

That was pretty chilling. Even the footage of the exterior of the GIDS premises was creepy.

But Kirsty at the end of the piece linked to BBC Action line for info about related issues. Look who's listed as recommended. 😡

I did exactly the same - straight to see who was recommended as "support"

2Rebecca · 18/06/2020 23:22

Oh no I looked at LGBT. Appalling they have Mermaids as somewhere for information if you are concerned about the potential harms of transing children

colouringindoors · 18/06/2020 23:23

Lots of good quotes from transcripts highlighted indicating much parental homophobia; children being referred for medical treatment after only one appointment; GIDS CEO Polly Carmichael discouraging staff from raising safeguarding concerns with Sonia Appleby, Safeguarding lead. Appleby has since started legal proceedings against GIDS.

stumbledin · 18/06/2020 23:23

I watched this by accident. And in a way it is a follow up of the earlier newsnight report mentioned above.

But I am glad they haven't given up, ie just said oh we did this last year.

Contains very strong allications that Carmichael(?) lead clinition is acting in a totally unprofessional way, and that staff are being discouraged from following standard health practice, particularly in relation to child safe guarding.

Which just goes to show that those who should be monitoring this clinic have clearly not been doing their job as it is what was being reported last time.

Lots in there, so hope it goes online as a clip.

So sad that in this day and age parents are still saying better trans than gay or lesbian.

Hope that no just women's groups but LGB Alliance follow up on this.

Expect an avalanche of attempts to discredit report from Mermaids (not asked to contribute!!) and Stonewall et al.

rogdmum · 18/06/2020 23:23

I would like to know what Sonia Appleby’s lawsuit is about.

This is an astonishing report, follow up to Emily Maitless’s interview with Polly Carmichael. Looks as though now legal action is coming along all the clinicians who were too frightened to speak out are now coming out of the woodwork. We warned about exactly what we were concerned about, but were dismissed and other organisations are still sucking up the gender nonsense. The safeguarding issues are massive and the shit is rightly hitting the fan. So sad for all those children who were given terrible advice and information. Too late for them

BuffaloCauliflower · 18/06/2020 23:24

Came here because I knew a thread would already be started. Just disgusting, this needs to be shouted about much much louder, children are being damaged.

Who could be signposted to help that isn’t Mermaids? Are there any organisations that are treat instead of just affirm?

stumbledin · 18/06/2020 23:24

Really glad it wasn't Maitlis who is just like some hammy amdram actress now.

NotAssigned · 18/06/2020 23:24

Introduction said 'biological sex' not 'sex assigned at birth'. We are making progress (I think they were deluged with complaints last time they said 'assigned at birth'.

colouringindoors · 18/06/2020 23:24

Every/almost every transcript mentioned Homophobia. Sounds huge to me.

BaronessSnippyPantsofCroneArmy · 18/06/2020 23:25

For those of us who have been familiar with this for a long time there wasn't much new in there, but the criticism of Polly Carmichael must make her position very precarious; will she be the sacrificial lamb?
She's a wrong 'un, I can't articulate it more clearly than that.

If you are new to the issue, it was a good enough report to make you say 'what?!' But the BBC still not really digging deep enough. It should have been mentioned that many people have been raising red flags for YEARS.

TinselAngel · 18/06/2020 23:25

I feel sick that clinicians treating abused children were discouraged from speaking to the Safeguarding lead or making referrals to social services.
Envy (not envy)

colouringindoors · 18/06/2020 23:25

How to get that Mermaids link off BBC Actionline?

NotAssigned · 18/06/2020 23:26

Not just mermaids. GIRES too.

colouringindoors · 18/06/2020 23:26

Yes agree. Carmichael does not look good.

Melroses · 18/06/2020 23:26

The safeguarding lead has only existed since Aug 2018.

Thingybob · 18/06/2020 23:27

I noticed Kirsty Wark concluded the item by directing anyone with concerns raised by the film to;

www.bbc.co.uk/actionline

Following the link to gender identity gives you these sources of support

stumbledin · 18/06/2020 23:28

I have a horrible feeling that with the BBC being in the clutches of trans activists this is the only way those who are gender critical can get something on air. ie a "news" story about allegations of medical malpractice.

Thingybob · 18/06/2020 23:28

Sorry I was way slower than others

RubyViolet · 18/06/2020 23:29

LGB Alliance now trending on Twitter as a smokescreen l presume. I can’t actually understand why it’s trending, it is being claimed that LGB is against Gay marriage and is right wing.... again. Load of rubbish but very pointedly orchestrated to run against this Newsnight item and coverage l think.

stumbledin · 18/06/2020 23:30

I wonder if it is possible to get the Detransitioners Network onto the action line list. After all if it is about support there should be access to services who can advise on a non medical path to feelings diagnosed as gender dysphoria.

midclegs · 18/06/2020 23:31

Love that this happened Every/almost every transcript mentioned Homophobia. Sounds huge to me

What is so concerning though it that within a 1 hour session a child is put on a medical pathway? This needs more sunlight.

It's a big ask, but I hope that more professionals who've left the Tavi can have a voice and write articles on this. We need to enable these women/men to have a voice
