Women’s toilets now gender neutral in Northampton Park

I noticed this today while walking in Abington Park in Northampton. Only the women’s has changed, the men’s is still labelled ‘gentlemen’.

Is this actually legal? I’ve heard the equality act mentioned and had a quick google but I wondered whether anyone can point me in the right direction of some legislation I can quote when I write to the council.

'This has all been pushed very hard by the toilet lobby. '.

Who are the toilet lobby?

Michelleoftheresistance · 22/06/2020 15:29

Surely the men’s loo could just have a sign saying one man at a time. Lots of shops are doing this So it’s the norm.

This however defeats what will be the main purpose, which is: do this for a few weeks under the guise of 'have to (despite the utter illogic)'

After a few weeks if nothing sufficiently awful has happened in large enough numbers to female people, and without enough complaints, turn everything unisex. Diversity box ticked, job done.

PurpleHoodie · 22/06/2020 16:23

It's totally sly isn't it Michelle.

Dicotyledon · 22/06/2020 16:30

British Toilet Association. In today’s topsy-turvy world, rather than a lobbying group, they are looked upon as an authority.

nzborn · 22/06/2020 17:43

l had to look cottaging up

Dicotyledon · 22/06/2020 18:53

Oh dear.

GoldenBlue · 23/06/2020 09:21

Scarily I've just complained to Northants council about their equality policy excluding sex as a characteristic. Eek

Great news, OP. Well done!

It wasn't made clear that it was for one weekend at all. I think they're just trying to revise history there.

keepingbees · 24/06/2020 14:27

I sense some major back peddling there, well done OP!

Michelleoftheresistance · 24/06/2020 14:33

Well done OP Smile

And yes, I agree, I think there's some hasty revisionism going on!

I wonder how it goes:

Trainer: This is the law (not mentioning we re wrote it earlier to say what we think it should instead of what it does) and this is what you should do, and there's No Issues and Nobody Minds.

LA: Great

LA: shit.... call the legal department, are they right? Where's the impact assess- what do you mean the dog ate it?! This isn't going to work is it? Reverse ferret!

bloodyhamabeads · 24/06/2020 14:36

Thanks everyone and thanks to everyone else that contacted the council and the local paper too. I’m really pleased, as it’s not just about a tiny park toilets, it’ll hopefully make them think twice before changing anything else in the future.

Congratulations, OP - small everyday victories.

A wise woman once said to me, "Remember, we only have the rights we can fight for."

Unfortunately we women have to keep fighting all.the.time.

SarahTancredi · 24/06/2020 15:40

Ha they broke the law and they know it. Who knew it took an entire weekend to cordon off a couple of urinals Hmm

Great work op

ThinEndoftheWedge · 24/06/2020 15:46

Well done! Excellent news.

nzborn · 24/06/2020 15:56

Brilliant news! It's disgusting that women are having to fight for women only spaces - again, in 2020 Hmm Thank you and everyone else who contributed for pushing back, you're bloody amazing 💪👏👏
endlessginandtonic · 24/06/2020 16:25

Well done OP.

iguanadonna · 24/06/2020 16:39

PurpleHoodie · 24/06/2020 16:57

Oh, well done! Flowers Flowers

PurpleHoodie · 24/06/2020 16:58

They knew they were breaking the law.

ShinyFootball · 24/06/2020 17:13

God isn't is depressing that not having men use the ladies in a park is counted as a massive win.

I mean this is basic bloody common sense.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/06/2020 17:27

It would surely have been easier to block off the urinals in the first place than get a 'Gender Neutral' sign made and attached over the door of the women's loo.
(I'm assuming they didn't already have such signs lying around....).

Anyway, well done. Whether deliberately or not, they've tested public sentiment on this and returned to legality and sanity.

bloodyhamabeads · 24/06/2020 17:58

Yes exactly. The sign didn’t seem like a temporary one
