I always understood that proforma responses to a consultation carry much less weight than individualised responses, hence women were encouraged to adapt suggested answers to make them their own.

99% of 470 responses saying no to self id

Sunday Times: PM to scrap plan to make gender change easier
eleventy3isthemagicnumber · 14/06/2020 00:03

Despite all the effort on any number of women's groups and mumsnet over 70% said yes to self ID

This doesn't match with polls.

The TRAs had at least 3 automated response widgets going, publicised by Stonewall, The Green Party (theirs had Aimee Challenor's name on it when it first went out) and a third, I forget who's that was now.

Plus an international network of TRA organisations with deep pockets.

We had - us. And we did a fucking fantastic job. But we were never going to get more responses in.

It'd be really interesting to see the difference in non-automated, UK responses.

ethelredonagoodday · 14/06/2020 00:03

I work in the public sector and when we run consultations, whilst we count all of the responses, those from campaign groups or using templates or whatever are always highlighted as an issue in the final reporting.

SarahTancredi · 14/06/2020 00:04

How are you seeing that mill

Watched the paper review on sky , they had 2 people on don't know either name , but one was insisting its being done due to myths and falsehoods ect , the other woman made a point of saying that womans voices need to be heard and its unfair to say its a myth given whats happened to jkr over the last few days and a debate needs to be had

HandsOffMyRights · 14/06/2020 00:12

I took to the streets in my large home city leafletting and canvassing opinion around the GRA and not one person was in favour of the proposed changes once I explained the truth. Not one!

In fact, most were appalled at some of the proposals to strip women and girls of our rights.

TRAs can threaten and gaslight all they want, but it was evident that in real life grown ups say no to the demands and tantrums.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 14/06/2020 00:13

It's probably worth an email of support to your MP if they are a Conservative. I will and I will stress that schools will have to follow the law rather than pressure groups' toolkits.

HandsOffMyRights · 14/06/2020 00:17

Thanks for the share Betsy
I felt really emotional reading that.

I've been off the board for a while, but the JKR story brought me back and I feel more motivated than ever to stand up for women.

Campervan69 · 14/06/2020 00:17

I canvassed as well and again didn't come across anybody who thought it was a good idea. And my labour MP is actually quietly on board he was appalled especially at the targeting of children.

HeyBells · 14/06/2020 00:18

Thanks Betsy

yestheyhave I saw that too. The contributor on the left was from Novara Media (home to Ash Sarkar & co) and was trying (and failing) to make the case that the 2 year wait for a GRC will make transwomen more vulnerable (eh?). The other contributor, who said womens' voices need to be heard, was from The Times Red Box which is their political column, and was unsurprisingly much more sensible and coherent.

Pinkyyy · 14/06/2020 00:19

Sorry, can someone explain what this means to me please? It sounds like good news for women.

karengetsshitdone · 14/06/2020 00:20

An obvious point (maybe) but government's leak details of legislation in order to test the water.

Now is a good time to email Baroness Nicholson and your MP if they are Conservative telling them how pleased you are about this.

Even if you wouldn't normally approve of anything a Conservative government does, on principle.

I'm a Labour voter - but I'm delighted by this. Absolutely delighted. And I'll be emailing Baroness Nicholson to thank her.

Really.

We need to make it very clear that this has a lot of support.

As to the previous poster who said the Conservatives won't give a stuff about this in the middle of a pandemic and Brexit, I think (personally) that is completely incorrect.

Johnson's favourability ratings are tanking. They are looking for a 'win'. We need to make it very clear that this is popular.

And, I would say that - if you are Labour through and through - the same thing goes. Starmer needs to understand this is popular with the electorate, the vast number of people outside the Twitter bubble.

So make it clear. Email. Write.

Rubidium · 14/06/2020 00:23

Isn't Andrew Gilligan, formerly a GC Sunday Times journalist, now some sort of adviser at Number 10? I'm sure he is involved in this somehow.

LouHotel · 14/06/2020 00:23

I guess I'll know by monday if I'll ever be rejoining the labour party.

This is Kier Starmer trap - he's agreed to self Id, he has the handmaids trio in his shadow cabinet but he know, he fucking knows about the risk to women. But let's put that aside and focus on this;

JK Rowling gave the Gordon Brown administration £1 Million for his campaign, it was the biggest political donation.

You cannot win back the red belt of the north east with Self ID

SuckingDieselFella · 14/06/2020 00:25

@Pinkyyy

Sorry, can someone explain what this means to me please? It sounds like good news for women.
Under the leaked plans: ● Proposals for people to self-identify their gender will be abandoned and those wanting to change their birth certificate will still need medical approval. At present that means two doctors have to sign off a gender change ● There will be a crackdown on “quack” doctors to ensure that only reputable medics can give approvals ● Safeguards will be put in place to protect “safe spaces” for women, reaffirming provisions in the Equalities Act ● New national guidelines on lavatory provision are likely to be introduced, replacing the “free-for-all” in which councils set their own rules, which has seen a rise in gender-neutral lavatories ● A ban on “gay-cure” therapies that are run by some church groups and therapists will be announced on the same day.
SuckingDieselFella · 14/06/2020 00:26

Should have put that in quotation marks. Don't sue me for breach of copyright, Sunday Times.

Winesalot · 14/06/2020 00:32

@Pinkyyy

Sorry, can someone explain what this means to me please? It sounds like good news for women.
It means that the proposed changes allowing people to self identify within a very reduced time period has been stopped.

It means they seek to strengthen the language around single sex spaces under the existing Equality Act. This means no penises in toilets, changing rooms but also prisons and refuges.

They are reviewing their practices regarding treatment. Liz Truss already said they are very keen to protect children from medicalised treatments that cause permanent changes and that is negative side effects as well.

mimivanne · 14/06/2020 00:32

Poll currently standing at 97% no to self ID from 970 votes

Winesalot · 14/06/2020 00:33

Sorry suckingdieselfella Cross post.

Winesalot · 14/06/2020 00:34

Next up I think is to force a review on lobbyist power within government here. That is a huge scandal. Stonewall and Mermaids first I think.
