Don't forget David T C Davies who was willing to put his head over the battlements very early on in the fightback.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 14/06/2020 23:57

Agree. Was thinking earlier that another thank you to David TC Davies’ office might be in order.

Aesopfable · 15/06/2020 00:10

Can't see a thread on this article although the rewrite has been discussed. Good to see it getting more daylight.

SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 15/06/2020 00:15

I've seen that story but I can't remember where. It's good that the mail are reporting on it and linking it positively to JKR though - barely a mention of 'backlash' and not a word on the three ungrateful little sods putting the boot in on twitter. Comments all supportive as well.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 15/06/2020 00:56

Yeah, comment all supportive and hundreds of likes too.

PurpleHoodie · 15/06/2020 00:59

MP David T C Davies was excellent last year. Really ready to listen and accommodate.

OvaHere · 15/06/2020 01:44

@ThePurported

That's great, Cant, but we've heard it all before, haven't we? We know that these MPs exist, and we know that they are too scared to speak up. Before the last GE we were told that Labour would protect women's single-sex spaces, except they couldn't agree on the definition of sex Hmm And now the shadow cabinet is full of people who just six months ago signed various anti-women 'pledges'. I hope your MP will write to her leader. If Starmer cares about women, he needs to start leading on this issue and not let it be painted as a left/right one.
I think how much they will feel able to speak up depends on how Starmer plays it. If he paves the way for a more moderate left then we might finally have some Labour MPs with something to say.
ErrolTheDragon · 15/06/2020 07:43

But will he 'play it' in a way which properly supports women's rights unless some labour MPs have the courage to speak up?
And it will take courage. Female MPs are always a target for misogynistic abuse, it would be good if some of the men stepped up to the mark on this too.

TirisfalPumpkin · 15/06/2020 10:19

I can understand how difficult it is for ordinary Labour party members (or indeed ordinary people of any political stripes) to speak up. It's an incredibly hostile and intolerant climate and I'm impressed any GC people are left in the Labour party, tbh.

MPs, though. I don't know, optimistic of me maybe but I would hope that someone who chooses to stand for election, who believes in democracy to that extent that they go out to be the change they want to see, might be brave enough to say, unambiguously, what they believe. Not wait 4 years equivocating and claiming the issue is complex and emotive. It never needed to be either of those things. It isn't complex and it only became emotive when we started treating narcissistic injury like legitimate oppression.

I know it's harder for women MPs than men because of the amount of abuse they get.

But still.

I won't forget how ordinary women did the bulk of the work, risking our jobs and sometimes our physical safety - as those of us who protested Prides etc can attest - while our elected representatives (with a few, much appreciated exceptions) sat and twiddled their thumbs.

DoraemonDingDong · 15/06/2020 11:20

Woman's Hour this morning was trailing tomorrow's episode to discuss scrapping the GRA amendment, and the "wider social implications". Might be worth a listen.

ThePurported · 15/06/2020 11:27

Well said.
Voting records are public anyway. Are these MPs just going to not show up whenever a tricky subject comes before parliament?

I guess that is my membership ended

Exactly how I feel. And it wasn't just backbench MPs - I've not forgotten James Kirkup referring to senior politicians whispering their concerns in his ear.

Amnesty lost the plot a long time ago.
BuzzShitbagBobbly · 15/06/2020 11:54

Amnesty lost the plot a long time ago.

In a similar vein, anyone seen the new profile for UN Women? Lovely Pride/Trans flag.

Despite their full-blown trans agenda and regular denial of woman as an entity, they curiously seem to know what we are when it comes to their normal campaigns. It's deranged.

YourVagesty · 15/06/2020 12:48

It's an incredibly hostile and intolerant climate and I'm impressed any GC people are left in the Labour party, tbh.

I genuinely think this was a big part of the Tory landslide before Christmas, but no media outlets obviously touched it. I think the whole 'Lily Madigan, Munroe Bergdorf' nonsense really tainted Corbyn's credibility. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. The Labour party just skated off into Momentum-ville, making themselves unelectable in the process. There are big lessons here for the political parties.

TedsFederationRep · 15/06/2020 13:01

Hardly surprising. Emma Bloody Watson is a UN Goodwill Ambassador for Women.

And she put the boot in after JKR disclosed that she had been the victim of both domestic violence and sexual assault.

That goodwill is pretty selective then.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 15/06/2020 13:06

I think of UN Women as Unwomen nowadays.

Wolfgirrl · 15/06/2020 13:39

I'm surprised I havent seen a trans response to the overhaul of puberty blockers, yet they're all up in arms about the toilets. It's almost as if a lot of them want to have the rights of a woman without changing their body..?

Lamahaha · 15/06/2020 15:02

Janice Turner in today's Times (sorry, I still haven't found out how to do the share token thing):

As usual, great comments.

OldeMagick · 15/06/2020 15:11

Pretty much all of the comments are supportive of Janice, many thanking her for her bravery over the last couple of years.

A couple of the regular TRA are on there but are getting their arses handed to them.

I wonder who you are talking about ConfusedWink

They have been sounding rather unhinged of late it has to be said. Nonsense about women not looking feminine enough and being accosted as if we are all entirely stupid..

That and the blame for if a man beats them up in the mens..

You cant argue that point then argue for the very rule that allows the same men that will beat them up in the mens to follow them into the womens.

They are no match for the intelligent articulate regulars that they frequently come up against yet fail to even try to improve their arguments.

It's so obvious how out of their depth they are now that it's actually funny

TedsFederationRep · 15/06/2020 15:30

As usual, great comments.

Including a number by JackyHolyoake. I miss her calm, logical, clear and sensible posts on these threads.

Thete is still a huge way to go in the US

The emotive New Yorker headline says it all (Trump, hate etc - they are talking about genital surgery for minors) and content is as you would expect.
