That is a marvelous piece of writing. What a woman. I suspect she will be torn apart for writing it though. Many will be incandescent that she hasn't apologised profusely and slunk into a hole in shame.

sahbear · 10/06/2020 17:53

I can't get the Click Here to work, where is it published?

JulesJules · 10/06/2020 17:55

Thank you @LizzieSiddal yes I'm fine. Didn't realise how anxious and depressed I have become about this utterly toxic cult of hatred towards women.

Heartlake · 10/06/2020 17:55

I'm not sure I can share your messages even with those I love and respect the most Joanne. I know you must be reading this because I see some echoes in your essay of what is here! It's a seminal piece. Thank you for using your talent and platform to gracefully place a marker in history about what is going on. Stay safe, sister. Solidarity.

potter5 · 10/06/2020 17:59

Wonderful! Hope DR and DR are suitably ashamed of themselves.

stumbledin · 10/06/2020 17:59

Shame that there are two threads on this, as it is so important it would be good to have all comments in one place!

potter5 · 10/06/2020 17:59

ER Eddy Redmayne!!

buildingbridge · 10/06/2020 18:01

I'm a bit late to this. But what did Daniel Radcliffe do?

defectiveinspector · 10/06/2020 18:02

Thank you Ms Rowling, that sums up the whole debate eloquently and beautifully.

Donations on their way to the two main charities she supports as a little thank you from me. I've also pre-ordered the next Robert Galbraith novel too.

RoosterPie · 10/06/2020 18:02

@buildingbridge

I'm a bit late to this. But what did Daniel Radcliffe do?
Released a statement totally ignoring the issues she raises, and apologising for her.
WellGoshDarnIt · 10/06/2020 18:07

I hope JKR told Daniel Radcliffe to get fucked!!!! How DARE he presume to apologise for her?

ofwarren · 10/06/2020 18:07

She is so unbelievably brave. I need to show at least an ounce of her bravery myself and share this on social media.
I follow people and read but find the abuse hard.
I would get pounced on from family and friends on facebook.

GeraltOfRivia · 10/06/2020 18:15

I'm the same @ofwarren. I couldn't face a torrent of abuse at the moment. I've already lost so many friends over our differing views on covid adding this to the mix would leave me lonely I think.

AlmaWhittaker · 10/06/2020 18:15

Thank you, Joanne, and to the OP for posting.

MrsWooster · 10/06/2020 18:15

Dear Joanne
You are what stands against the pernicious misogyny that threatens our daughters. Your stand is a bulwark for women currently enduring what you endured. You are the change you want to see.

Thank you.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 10/06/2020 18:22

What a powerful piece of writing.

Maya, I filled out your questionnaire earlier and reading that makes me want to add and add. All of what JKR said is why it matters to me.

Cuntysnark · 10/06/2020 18:26

It’s truly brilliant. Jo & Maya. Giants among women. Thank you both for not backing down.

JellySlice · 10/06/2020 18:27

Email and tell her:

DancingLady · 10/06/2020 18:27

This made me cry. She says it so so perfectly. Jo, I'm sorry you went through this abuse. I'm glad you escaped and thrived. Thank you a million times for speaking up for women.

BringbackLang · 10/06/2020 18:29

Jo, what a wonderful piece of writing. You said everything that I feel. Thank you.

So sod you Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne, Katie Leung, Mara Wilson, George Takei and every other man and woman who has thrown JKR under a bus. She's stronger than you ever hope to be. Woman is not yours to give away and woman is not a costume.

backseatcookers · 10/06/2020 18:31

This brought me to tears. She said everything so eloquently and calmly.

Me too.

She is so wonderful and I cannot believe it has come to this, a practically forced revelation of survival of emotional, physical and sexual abuse from a woman who has been told "suck my dick" from countless men over the past few days.

Needless to say despite her calm, measured and empathetic words she will be met with yet more of the same.

I feel heartened by her words but still heartbroken by the situation.

CatandtheFiddle · 10/06/2020 18:31

Thanks for linking to this. This bit jumped out at me - Ms Rowling takes on an enormously complex bit of the argument, and expresses it sooo clearly:

I’ve read all the arguments about femaleness not residing in the sexed body, and the assertions that biological women don’t have common experiences, and I find them, too, deeply misogynistic and regressive. It’s also clear that one of the objectives of denying the importance of sex is to erode what some seem to see as the cruelly segregationist idea of women having their own biological realities or – just as threatening – unifying realities that make them a cohesive political class.

It's brilliant!

FannyCann · 10/06/2020 18:32

What a relief to read this, thank you Jo.
Clearly stating what so many women have been saying.
Nobody reasonable and sensible could read that and disagree.
Anyone who reads that - looking at you, politicians, Nicola Sturgeon and many others, and still has the nerve to say but TWAW and plough ahead with new gender recognition laws - a special place in hell awaits.
I will never vote for any political or political party who supports this harmful ideology.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 10/06/2020 18:41

"It’s also clear that one of the objectives of denying the importance of sex is to erode what some seem to see as the cruelly segregationist idea of women having their own biological realities or – just as threatening – unifying realities that make them a cohesive political class"

She's hit the nail on the head here. All of this horseshit around "this group are menstruators and this group are cervix havers and this group are people who can get pregnant" etc. As if they aren't all the same fucking group 99% of the time. It's about fracturing women into a thousand different nameless groups so we can't stand together as a cohesive political class for the purpose of advocating for our rights. It's not an inconvenient side effect of transactivism, its one of it central goals.

Thingybob · 10/06/2020 18:43

Woah, what an amazing woman
