Asda's new pronoun badges for staff

My BIL who works at our local store has just received this information, he thinks Asda's gone mad. Asda are also funding Diversity Role Models with £100,000 over the next year. Looks as though they're jumping in with both feet.

Asda's new pronoun badges for staff

Most of the time its used by older creepy men as a power play..women hardly ever/never do it

Totally. It's a red flag for a creep or a bully.

I don’t normally need to use a pronoun when interacting with supermarket staff tbh. Nor do I actually go into supermarkets much these days. But I think campaigns like this are simply about raising the awareness and helping someone feel more comfortable if they identify with a pronoun which may not be obvious. It won’t affect me in any way so definitely am not going to lose sleep over it.

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2020 07:09

I thought it was a small slice of chilli too

StealthPolarBear · 09/06/2020 07:09

" if they identify with a pronoun which may not be obvious"
What does this even mean?

teawamutu · 09/06/2020 08:14

I reckon quite a lot of staff might choose to use the 'Ask me...' badge.

It'll be a customer deterrent - quiet life for the winGrin

HandsOffMyRights · 09/06/2020 08:39

It's funny, because Diversity Role Models (who have wangled their way into my child's school) seemed to have no problems with male pronouns when they tweeted about male strippers last year. So appropriate for an organisation linked to children, don't you think?

HandsOffMyRights · 09/06/2020 08:42

I have a vag for life, Asda.

There's a study that's been posted a few times that shows that women are discriminated against when their sex is highlighted in the workplace. Might be worth sending in.

Antibles · 09/06/2020 10:41

I thought it was prices on rollback, not women's rights.

Z0rr0 · 09/06/2020 10:50

Can you choose your pronouns on your badge? I'd like something like Chips / Beans.

Molocosh · 09/06/2020 11:37

Personally I don’t see how it’s helpful. Enforcing certain pronouns will not take away people’s inherent biases and prejudices, or prevent gender based inequality and discrimination. Gender cues are still visible regardless of pronouns. A muscular bearded man will still be treated as male regardless of what his badge says.

This thread is getting funnier and funnier. Grin

I can't get uptight about this unless they are pressuring people to wear them. People can wear badges if they want.

OhFuckThisShitSeriously · 09/06/2020 12:49

This thread is fucking funny (albeit for a sad reason). Vag for life Grin

NCed for this. The only time I have ever been asked about this in a shop (he would say "challenged", I call it "annoyed and patronised ") was in Asda funnily enough, by an employee who saw my "woman definition" tote bag.

He questioned me on where I bought said bag. He asked me very sincerely if I didn't "feel that people have the right to live their own lives". I agreed they totally do, for example I have the right to live my life not getting naked next to a rapist, in a woman only space, who had accessed that space by saying he was a woman.
(I wasn't quite as articulate as that obviously as it was RL and I wanted to get my scratchcard and a queue was building) I did ask why he thought I wasn't entitled to my rights at the expense of men exercising their rights. His response was that we should "agree to disagree" - how fucking telling is that!

Since that time I have included Asda women's toilets in the list of places where I (hopefully) raise awareness of this issue and women's rights. There is lots of useful information out there that we can provide to them after all...

Crystaltree · 09/06/2020 12:53

I don't want pronouns. I demand my full name is used in every utterance.

JellySlice · 09/06/2020 13:05

Of course they can. And other people can ignore the badges if they want.

But I wonder, whose right to declare or ignore will Asda support if the badge-wearer (or an uninvolved ally) decides to complain?

Triggered, you may say. So if I were to march up to the manager and say that I was made to feel uneasy/unsafe/distraught/queasy at the sight of the wee fools demanding I called them by a pronoun that did not match outer reality?

I would much much rather see a badge that indicated (if they wanted to wear one), say, that an assistant was hard of hearing, or had sight issues, or maybe had another issue ('don't be a shit to me if I forget something, I have early onset dementia'). I'd think 'great - this company actually cares and tries to look after their staff'.

But this guff? Give me a break - I want to get my pint of milk and get out.

AlwaysTawnyOwl · 09/06/2020 14:44

Its the assumption that as a customer I would give a monkeys what someones pronouns are. Indicative of this narcisstic cult who think that we're all agog to see what someones inner identity is. Honestly, we're just looking for the carrots.

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 14:59

I think I would choose:

He
Her
Ask me for today's choice

or make up my own, after all - why not?
