Hello,

I have written an article on why I think the usage of "Karen" is problematic. I wonder if anyone could give me some feedback on it as this is my first time writing about feminism? Any comments appreciated! Smile

Please note: I am British, and this article criticizes how Karen is typically used in the UK. I am told that the “Karen” reference has a different meaning in US English; that is not what I am referring to in this piece.

You are still denying the inherent misogyny of it.

Do women get a free pass on racism?

Who has said that? Do black women get a free pass on reductionist misogyny?

By that logic, it either retains it’s original use, ie. used by black women to call out entitled, racist behaviour by white women, or it is accepted to have evolved into a general ageist, misogynistic slur used by everyone against women. It’s hardly fair for it to be used as a general ‘shut up women’ by white men but be considered acceptable because black women invented it. Either way women can’t win, the word either labels them as an entitled racist or just old/irrelevant/of no value, and even being unhappy about that makes you a ‘Karen’ apparently.
