Pantene, Paris Lees and Women's Aid

Sorry if there's a post on this already, I've been absent of late! I'm not on Twitter either anymore, so if it's been done already, please let me know.

Has anybody seen the Pantene advert featuring Katie Piper, another female, whose name I don't know and Paris Lees?

The three are showing off their hair/confidence? in the ad.

At the end, Katie Piper speaks a link to Women's Aid.

I was shocked when I saw the ad. I think it's really inappropriate that Lees is in this ad on a number of levels, but how can somebody with a history of violence be featured? Especially when Katie herself is a victim of male violence.

I've not been on this forum for a while and am trying to word this in a way that won't get this thread taken down.
I'm sketchy on some of the details of Lee's past, but if my memory serves me right, there was a very serious incident of violence and I find this appalling.

I haven't seen the ad, is it on tv? I had heard on here a while back Pantene were using Paris Lee and at the time thought it was an online ad.

I hadn't heard about the women's aid link, that's really shocking not envy

I can't remember the details of their violence and suspect if we put details of the offence up here it will get erased anyone know where this stuff is recorded?

I didn't contact Pantene last time just stopped buying same as I would any product using someone with a violent background but using them to advertise women's aid is repulsive so I think I will.

TBH when I read about Paris' history I feel sorry for Paris.

I admire anyone who can overcome an early start of being abused (I see anyone who has to work as a rent boy, as being abused) and going off the rails (prison).

However, I really really wish the "bandwidth" of being male could accommodate people like Paris. That men could allow fellow-men to express their need to wear dresses and high heels; and present themselves with "feminine" clothing, make-up etc.- it would be much better for all of us.

I admire women like Katie Price and Ramla Ali, both of whom have their own inspirational stories of overcoming war, refugee status, violence and disfigurement (all, while also being disadvantaged by being biologically female).

What I dont wish is that women need to share their biological sex, with people who dont have the same biological reality.

It was on TV last night (during Gogglebox I think - so might be on catch up).

I recall Lees talks about the violent criminal incident in an interview. It's often erased, but Lees has referred to it previously.

Is this old? I saw it once ages ago and thought I was dreaming. The backstories of the women are terrible.

HandsOff I can't see any reports of violence on a quick Google search (doesn't mean it didn't happen).

That is some of the advert posted upthread on You Tube. It does not, however, include the part where Katie Piper links to Women's Aid!

I don't admire anybody who has participated an act of violence on another (and with a weapon), or when the victim later dies.

I don't admire anybody who believes that males should share spaces with women, including refuges.

There's used to be records that weren't the perpetrator's 'sanitised' poor me version, versions that had a record of the level of violence...

Oh and there was this some time ago regarding women's seemingly irrational fear of male violence.

You won't find much mention of the crime online. You may see the word 'prison' and 'young'. Like Pantene, it's glossed over.

Not a good look for someone who wants to be spokesperson or a role model.

Paris Lees had a stint in crime, but I think they were young and naive.

Still, not great to juxtapose them with Women's Aid. Completely inappropriate.

But a criminal past didn’t stop Gino D’Acampo getting work. I think Paris has spoken more about Paris’s past mistakes and I don’t really require shampoo adverts to give me moral guidance. It is about swishy hair, which both people have.

No idea about PLs history of violence. However I think if Pantene wanted to run a trans inclusive campaign with women’s aid there are plenty of transwomen who have never been violent to anyone to choose from. Women’s aid exists to support victims of male violence. How on earth can they have a perpetrator of male violence on that campaign?

Btw has any else noticed that “male” autocorrects to having a capital “M” (I always go back and change it to lowercase) but female doesn’t? Is this just my iPhone, all iphones or what?

I dont think PL has tried to hide this miserable part of their history to be fair. I too agree that being a rent boy at 14 is child abuse and not 'sex work'. I'm sure all the grim details will be there in the soon-to-be-released book and there will be no stinting on the graphic details of it all (if PL's writings on their own post-operative sex life are anything to go by).

I remember PL took part in a 'Working Class Heroes' talk with Tom Courtenay a while back. They are a big fan and I imagine their book will attempt to have a touch of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner to it. They were asking on their Twitter a while back for advice on local Notts dialect so expect some Notts vernacular. Obviously there will be the added element of their transition story and the maximum fairy-dust transformation to becoming a Vogue Columnist and shiny-hair haver.

They do have lovely hair it has to be said but I wish Pantene could have at least separated out Katie Piper's ad and the Women's Aid link from the generic Ad featuring PL. It is a bit insensitive I think.

Everyone deserves a 2nd chance, fair enough, I take no offence at PL working in a TV add. The hypocrisy of the add is sickening though-agree with PP, why couldn't PL appear as they are in a mens advert? Expand the bandwidth of men, not shoehorn them into the already taken category of women.

It makes you wonder about the ‘men’s’ and ‘women’s’ products then - Is it really just the same crap in different colours packs?

Thank you! It has baffled me for some time.

It's not just that. There's a disregard for women's safety by PL in various articles and tweets and a message that males should be allowed in all female spaces because it isn't fair on males.

So if someone was to change their sexual identity - if they had a DRB they could they avoid answering the bit a little ‘previous names’ in case it ‘outed’ them? So with self-ID any background checks wouldn’t be worth the paper they were printed on. Of course if someone is famous then it’s a different matter because the news is always ‘out there’.
