Chilling and totalitarian. You would have thought they had learned something with the Named Persons bill and the Football bill

Is Scottish Gov pushing this through during COVID crisis? Anyone know of the timetable for this?

OP posts:

just brewing a pot of coffee before I fill this in - just bumping it up the threads here

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 24/07/2020 15:24

OhHolyJesus
I'm really struggling with this, the more I think about it the more I think hate crime is just nonsense. We should just prosecute for the crimes criminals commit.

This is my frustration too - no murder is better or worse than any other etc

fatblackcatspaw · 24/07/2020 17:53

me too Gibbons... Ive done it with a mix of the National Secular society and the For Women scotland submission.. not perfect but done. I've pointed out that if this bill passed 1000s of women could be prosecuted under this bill in scotland and we dont' have the court or prison capacity! FOR F'S SAKE! My chance to get into Cornton Vale after demoing outside as a student.... its unbloody BELIVEABLE!

OhHolyJesus · 24/07/2020 19:30

Right well I've sent mine, I referred to fair cop which I had previously missed. I mentioned that rape would be an aggravated crime as it happens to women because you are a women so they should include sex.

I can't think why they don't want to include it now...Hmm

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 24/07/2020 20:03

Haha Fatcat I like that you went for the practicalities! I tried to make the point that free speech should include opinions that don’t match those of whatever ScotGov we have at the time (I think I made quite a hash of it - I prefer a form to an open letter!)
The lack of a decent political opposition in Scotland is to the detriment of us all.

fatblackcatspaw · 24/07/2020 20:08

I head the minister in charge on radio 4 news who just flatly denighed that this is the logical outcome of the bill.. Hunza? I'm so underwhelmed by ALL our political processes at the moment.

testing987654321 · 24/07/2020 23:01

done! pretty rubbish, but I hope it wasn't too late.

fatblackcatspaw · 25/07/2020 00:53

tomororw I'm goign to forward what I wrote to all my 8 mostly useless MSPs ... could not face it tonight. So far after writing regarding the hellacious Gender Boards statutory guidance only 4 have responded 2 of which are Tories....

OhHolyJesus · 25/07/2020 14:29

BBC gets it wrong again using gender in place of sex. I feel another complaint coming on...

Alex Massie's comment in the Sunday Times today:

testing987654321 · 26/07/2020 08:07

Why do they do articles after the opportunity to respond has ended?

OhHolyJesus · 26/07/2020 08:29

I think there was coverage for the BBC during the surrogacy consultation and perhaps there has been some on Scotland, but yes, it's too bloody late now.

I also wish the Times and BBC would add the email address of where to send submissions, they will likely take some late ones this weekend, it gets ruled on by someone but worth a try.

malloo · 27/07/2020 15:27

just realised I've missed the deadline for responding to this - can anyone advise if there is anything useful I can still do now? write to MSP?

terryleather · 27/07/2020 15:36

malloo I think it's definitely worth writing to your MSPs even though the deadline for the committee submission is past - I did do the submission but still to get round to the MSPs myself...Grin

OhHolyJesus · 27/07/2020 15:49

@malloo there was something on this in the guidelines I think. A clerk will decide to include it. It's worth sending to the justice email address anyway, I think some late submissions might still be considered. You could always cc you MSP.

New Scottish hate crime laws 'could devastate legitimacy of police'
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-53567229

BBC Scotland reporting police and law society are worried about this bill

OhHolyJesus · 28/07/2020 16:59

That's interesting Bowler, they quoted the Bill correctly, and Lord Bracadale's review correctly. (It was put forward as gender but lists sex as the category which would be added later.)

I have confirmation of receipt of my complaint on the earlier link but no reply as yet.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 28/07/2020 18:06

Ha, I read this and can hear the gritted teeth: 'Police officers are all too aware that there are individuals in society who believe that to feel insulted or offended is a police matter.'

Jeeeez · 28/07/2020 19:23

Labour Women's Declaration's submission to the commission was masterful:

Such a pity that the rest of them are lost to the genderwoo virus...

MoreJammyDodgersPlease · 29/07/2020 19:42

The Catholic Church have expressed their concerns:

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/07/2020 19:53

List of everyone against it here:

wingsoverscotland.com/the-cabaret-voltaire/

When the Orange Order and the Catholic Church are in agreement, you know you have seriously fucked up...

MoreJammyDodgersPlease · 29/07/2020 19:57

That's quite a list. And those in favour? Only the Scottish Government.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 29/07/2020 20:21

Holy moly.

Igneococcus · 29/07/2020 20:23

Also a leading article in the Times Scotland section today:
