Trans actors can play cis but cis can't play trans. Why am I bothering to try and see the sense?

A trans woman was due to play a woman in a play but declined when it turned out a trans woman would be played by a man. As far as I can tell, the trans character undergoes no medical or surgical transition so would have a wholly male physique anyway.

The casting decision could cause violence and death, apparently.

I'm sure the talent pool is limited just down the numbers. Would it have been acceptable for a woman to play the part?

Not helping the 'cause', are they?
I think more and more people are starting to say 'I'm sick of this shit' every time a story like this surfaces.

Winesalot · 11/03/2020 15:15

There has been the idea of purity casting in Hollywood lately. I am not sure if it is a good thing. I would have thought talent should have priority. And to a degree whether that actor would have the pull to get bums on seats.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 11/03/2020 15:18

The hypocrisy is strong with this one.

thirdfiddle · 11/03/2020 15:25

I wonder if she'd also have withdrawn if the transwoman was due to be played by a woman. Is it why didn't I get that part? Or is it male realistically playing a non medical transwoman makes TWAW nobody can tell the difference argument look ridiculous? If she hadn't already got a part I guess there may have been objections on similar grounds to wanting disabled roles to be offered to disabled actors where possible. That's hard to argue if they already had a role though.

sunshinesupermum · 11/03/2020 15:28

I'm just sick of all this. Whoever has the talent should get the part. End of.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 15:35

Could lead to violence, even death... What a utter headcase Hmm

Cheeseandwin5 · 11/03/2020 15:52

The daily Mail, has an agenda and they will twist facts and truths to match this.
I suggest you see the BBC report to get a fuller and more truthful view.

Do we need to explain acting?

Do we need to recall Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot?

Do we need to recall the director of Precious who saw any number of girls who were the character, but she cast the polite middle-class girl who could act?

That's hilarious. The BBC have the most blatant agenda on trans issues of any news outlet. Well, except maybe Pink News.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/03/2020 16:02

So they should've got a female to play the mother and a trans woman to play the trans woman.

HollowTalk · 11/03/2020 16:02

O'Donnell said: "I could not be in a show where a trans woman is once again seen as a man in a dress as this perpetuates the idea that this is what a trans woman is and leads to violence, even death.

But... but...

Why what was the bias that was picked up in the report?

Yours is the same argument used by the right wing press who have brained washed their gullible readers (ahem) into thinking that being fair is now liberal/left wing and that all outlets should agree to their right wing bias.

HollowTalk

I know, I had to read that a couple of times to make sure I wasn't seeing things. The absurdity of it is astonishing.

Cheeseandwin5
The Mail story is taken from the BBC one.

BringbackLang · 11/03/2020 16:13

The BBC give a balanced view. Bwahahahaha

andyoldlabour · 11/03/2020 16:15

"Industry advice from trans-led charity Gendered Intelligence - "having an actor who was born male playing a trans woman increases prejudice because "many people internalise the myth that being trans is a performance, a deception, that trans women are 'really men".

This has gone way beyond ridiculous.

Hmm yes, nasty old science saying that you can't change sex. Chromosomes are so right wing. I'm off right now to burn my kids biology textbook. Glad you made me see the light.

From the BBC article “ having an actor who was born male playing a trans woman increases prejudice“

So the trans woman character should have been played by someone who is a trans woman, but who was not born male? Confused

Um, who could play that? only people born male (even if you think they were “assigned” rather than observed) can be transwomen, right?

What a nonsense. The point about acting is that you can be something you are not. If you can only play a version of yourself, that’s not acting, that just showing up in a play.

RuffleCrow · 11/03/2020 16:19

There's no 'cis'.

ginghamstarfish · 11/03/2020 16:22

I read about that, and thought WTF ... and please don't use that ridiculous term 'cis'.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/03/2020 16:23

Do we need to recall Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot?

Or Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything ..... a History of Art grad playing a cosmologist.... Shock

FemaleAndLearning · 11/03/2020 16:26

I wonder how accepting of the character Haley from Coronation Street people would have been if she was played by a male acting as a transwoman? I would imagine (as I don't watch soaps) everyone has forgot Haley is trans!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 11/03/2020 16:26

Completely off topic but I wish they'd do purity casting with actors whose characters play the violin. (Looking at you, Umbrella Academy).

Mockerswithnoknockers · 11/03/2020 16:29

Elijah Wood not an actual hobbit??????

S'a disgarce!!!
