Workplace cake sale to raise money for Mermaids

To celebrate International Women's Day Hmm a charity bake sale is being held at my workplace to raise money for Mermaids UK, "to show our support for the transgender community".

Has anybody come across a similar situation in the workplace, and if so, did you raise any concerns? I'm cowardly about speaking out, but I feel I should say something! How to do this delicately/ sensitively?.I don't want to rock the boat though, as it's work! And ultra-woke...

How about a copy of that cake made for the "top surgery " doctor's birthday, with a pneumatic, trout-pouted young woman in royal icing, scrubbed and ready for the scalpel?

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 02/03/2020 16:19

This thread is very heartening- I hope you all find each other & improved your employer’s priorities!

How anyone could think IWD —-> mermaids is beyond me

ThePurported · 02/03/2020 16:24

No it goes further back to Press For Change, GIRES & Beaumont Society in UK.

True, I was just wondering about the unquestioning promotion of Mermaids by the EHRC specifically. David Isaac's connection to Stonewall has to be a factor?

R0wantrees · 02/03/2020 16:30

Its a very small group of people with considerable influence.

Who has influenced who is the key question.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 02/03/2020 16:36

As a transgender charity 50% of Mermaids funding goes to MEN. Trans men are men. It is therefore completely inappropriate and potentially hugely insulting/offensive/triggering for trans men that money should be raised for them on International Women’s Day.How would trans women feel if money was raised for them on International Men’s Day?

This x 100.
You don't work for Waterstones do you? There seem to be strong links between Starbucks and Waterstones - several Waterstones I know have Starbucks cafes. And Starbucks = Mermaids.

senua · 02/03/2020 16:43

Take in a nice plate consisting of a bratwurst and two dumplings. Artfully arranged.
If anyone questions it, tell them that the plate's contents identify as a cake.

OhHolyJesus · 02/03/2020 16:45

I'd suggest Vancouver Rape Relief as the alternative beneficiary, or Keira Bell's crowdfunder, as she is a woman.

Babdoc · 02/03/2020 16:55

senua Grin Love it!
I dare you, OP...

Cucumbersalad · 02/03/2020 16:59

Not Waterstones, no...

FrogsFrogs · 02/03/2020 17:01

Let it not be Waterstones...

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 17:02

I don’t that those who make the decisions like this are fools and desperate to appear ‘with it’ and swallow any old shiny guff.

Generally they are absolutely ‘without it’.

R0wantrees · 02/03/2020 17:07

Im sure Filia will be able to recommend a long list of charities & grassroots projects supporting girls & women in UK and throughout the world.

There’s also the stickers in Canada with the Ogre’s face and OBEY written underneath. That’s scary though.

FrancisHarris recent tweet:

"Here’s the link to Mermaids’ 2019 accounts.
Income has sky-rocketed more than eightfold from 2016-19.

2017: £127,922
2018: £317,575
2019: £715,326
The 2018 surplus was £107,000 and in 2019, £309,000.

3/ Where’s the money coming from?
Mermaids gives less clarity than it used to, classifying more than two-thirds as donations. But another 25 percent comes from grants, presumably like the Department for Education, who contributed in the

4/ Large sums come from the National Lottery and Children in Need, organisations which - it’s fair to say - take little account of public opinion when making grants.
Funds also come from big City of London institutions like the Leathersellers and the Henry Smith Charity" (continues)

Is Leathersellers Edward Lord's guild?

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 17:32

That reminds me - Sports Relief is all over the place near my work. Anyone know off the top of their head where they give money to?

GloGirl · 02/03/2020 17:32

I would honestly have no problem messaging that at best Mermaids would support boys and girls so it is not best placed as a charity for IWD. Better if you can recommend an alternative charity.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 02/03/2020 17:51

Really interesting info about the funders. Thanks to all who posted it!

niceberg · 02/03/2020 18:01

Wellbeing for Women is a good medical research charity that is worth supporting. Research is expensive, and lacking when it comes to conditions affecting women specifically.

Thesuzle · 02/03/2020 18:05

Thanks for info R0wantrees.

Pumpkinsarepurple · 02/03/2020 18:36

Sport Relief - were they the ones who who started a woman Wednesday and the first one was Lili Elbe ?

Lordfrontpaw · 02/03/2020 18:37

Thank you for that! Just in case someone asks why I wont give money for some plastic tat destined for landfill (as if that wasn’t excuse enough)
