Agrees that babies are born with a sex.

But says in response to Blair's comments about focussing on the trans issue that it keeps being brought up by the media and they [labour party] don't really want to talk about it because each time it's spoke about a trans person gets hurt.

Wtf? In what world can a party have a policy that they don't want to talk about?

From the PN clip Dawn Butler MP (Shadow Women & Equalities minister) says:

"Transwomen are just 1% of the population.
There's not many transwomen really.
There's about one in 3000.
So for every 3000 women you might meet, you might meet one transwoman."

I think this statement would be an excellent resource for anyone teaching how important it is to understand statistics.

It does rather lend itself to a series of questions:

  1. The ONS last estimate of UK population was 66 435 600 (mid 2018). What is 1% of this figure?

Somewhat related.

When WPUK met with butler, details of the meeting including names of attendees, were leaked to Pink News.

Is this legal??

Three months later, Butler accepted a nine day trip to Los Angeles worth £14,200 for herself and a member of staff as a gift from Anthony Watson.

Setting aside the dodgy maths I guess calculating the %age of trans men in the UK was too taxing for Butler. Her remit is equalities- trans men are well within it.

furrytoebean · 22/02/2020 13:52

The problem with all of this is that they were never listening to feminist theory in the first place.
They kind of half listened and now are using terms that they don't understand.

Labour does not know the difference between sex and gender. When I rejoined the form asked 'gender - male/female/other'

I wrote to them to say that male and female aren't genders and maybe think what the purpose of gathering this data is. Do they want to know how many people in their party are in the sex class female and are discriminated against because of this fact or do they just want to know who feels womanly today. I suggested that they might be better off asking for sex and having another question for how people identify. Obviously I heard nothing back.

I have also written to my mp with my opinions about the trans pledge and asked him to confirm that my views are welcome in the party or to expel me.

I am done.

Yes, "from the statistics provided, how much does the Shadow Minister think about females who are transgender?" would be an important question.

andyoldlabour · 22/02/2020 14:07

Not Dawn Butler, but another Labour MP who takes the mick. Kate Osamor, who promoted her drug dealer son to a £43,000 House of Commonjs job.
What is happening, are there no checks and balances any more?

”Every time we talk about it, another trans person gets attacked.

She is seriously now saying that women should not talk about their rights or they are responsible for attacks on trans people. What a manipulative shitty person she is.

Her whole approach reminds me of that "God kills a kitten" meme.

And yes she's shit at data. She said there were three thousand street homeless people in a constituency. There were thirty.

Full Fact also say that her claims on LGBT hate crime are completely unsupported by fact. Her stats are wrong, anyway, but in point of fact the Home Office say more people are willing to report it now (obviously a great thing), hence the increase in reported incidence - according to the National Crime Survey, which is the means most commonly used to assess crime incidence, it is falling.

wellbehavedwomen · 22/02/2020 14:23

Someone also needs to ask if she's sure about that 1% stat. Because if she is, why is it 2% in the male prison population?

I will be fair, though: she's not mentioning transmen because she knows nobody is scared of transmen. Which is because transmen pose no threat to male sports or safety, and nor do they pose any to ours own.

It's almost as though nobody gender critical is remotely bothered by someone being trans - just by the risks to women's provision, inclusion and safety of people with male bodies being allowed to access female.

GodwinsRulebook · 22/02/2020 14:47

I'm afraid I just thought she didn't sound very bright. Her CORE + D plan was an attempt at a catchy slogan that was just weird, and sounded made up by Armando Ioanucci for a parody programme.

Mockersisrightasusual · 22/02/2020 14:52

I'm afraid I just thought she didn't sound very bright.

I fear you're right.

But Dawn thinks Dawn is bloody brilliant, I fear.

littlbrowndog · 22/02/2020 14:53

Every time Dawn Butler debates something in the media, another Labour voter leaves

Lordfrontpaw · 22/02/2020 14:54

So another kind of tinkerbelle effect? Every time Dawn opens her mouth another labour supporter’s hopes and dreams die?

GodwinsRulebook · 22/02/2020 14:57

My problem about saying this is, of course, that I sound like a casual racist. But my judgement of her ability by that interview was based on the way she responded in a kind of robotic way, and tended to pronounce slogans, rather than engage intellectually.

I also found the thinly-veiled disowning of & contempt for Tony Blair to be breathtaking. Blair gave us a decade of Labour government - he kept the Tories at bay. His government established SureStart, they bumped up education funding and NHS funding, to try to get schools, universities & the health service back to something near the appropriate standards - and so on ...

Momentum-led Labour has lost 4 elections - several of which they should have walked in, given the total disarray & cocking up of the Tories.

Lordfrontpaw · 22/02/2020 15:10

I suspect she is just going to say wilder and wilder things until she states that she is actually rather unwell and this made her say stuff. A bit like Diane Abbott and the diabetes (sorry love but diabetes doesn’t make you talk nonsense - ask Teresa May, whatever you think of her, she has it too).

VickyEadieofThigh · 22/02/2020 15:17

So another kind of tinkerbelle effect? Every time Dawn opens her mouth another labour supporter’s hopes and dreams die?

This.

Chiochan · 22/02/2020 15:49

@PronounssheRa
just putting this up again as I think this is truely shocking, I had always there were laws against doing something like this? I guess not.

'When WPUK met with butler, details of the meeting including names of attendees, were leaked to Pink News.'

Will never forget him at Conference, when still in Opposition, saying that he knew change was hard but it was necessary. He quoted a party member saying angrily, "You're an absolute disgrace - I know Tories who say they'd vote for you!"

Their idea of the perfect is the fatal enemy of the achievable good.

While they wangst away about how best to deny women's rights, austerity continues to kill the people they were, traditionally, supposed to represent. Muppets.

wellbehavedwomen · 22/02/2020 19:04

@Chiochan isn't that a form of doxxing? At any rate, it's appalling and they are just not electable.

R0wantrees · 22/02/2020 19:07

Dawn Butler MP (Shadow Women & Equalities Minister):

"We shouldn't have the debate in soundbites. Actually it's a very complex issue. The simple thing to remember is:
"Transwomen are Women"
&
"Transmen are men"

They also closed Remploy Factories making 1000's of disabled people lose jobs and rely on benefits, which of course they changed to the tougher to get PIP, and gave ATOS the contract for assessments.

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 22/02/2020 19:11

I'm sure deep down they care though, the caring party.

Lordfrontpaw · 22/02/2020 19:18

My arse. Care about what exactly?
