Line Manager just "come out" as Non-binary

SpinningTooFastWantToGetOff · 07/02/2020 18:39

My line-manager emailed everyone in the office last week to say she was non-binary and we should use they/them pro-nouns.
Today I inadvertently called her she in an email to a colleague in another office, but line-manager was copied in, plus her line-manager. Are you keeping up? Confused
My line-manager responded to the email and added at the bottom a reminder about her pro-nouns.
I do not believe in the gender identity ideology and so object to being told to speak in an unnatural and incorrect way, but what I am incandescent about is being called out in front of 2 other colleagues.
Am I over reacting?

But so what, @YourHighness? People do silly things all the time. If that's the view of what the line manager is doing, who cares? We'd be in a right mess if we got all het-up ever time somebody did something silly at work. If somebody decides they want to be called 'Princess Consuela Banana Hammock', I think that's silly, but I'll call them that without getting all sweary about it.

NotBadConsidering · 08/02/2020 09:16

I don't get it. Who cares? We've got a gender neutral person in our office and everybody just said 'Oh, ok then' and tries to get it right. Nobody got upset about it.

Because a woman lost her job because she used the wrong pronoun for this person

www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-48295000

and another person policed that language. How lovely everything is happy clappy in your lovely accepting office, but it’s obvious that it takes very little for things to escalate and become an HR problem. I also think everyone in your office but have no form of independent thinking as they are happy to be told what to think and what to say without any challenge to it and its wider implications.

Findumdum1 · 08/02/2020 09:17

Nobody has sworn or insulted anyone. You are just airing your agenda and everyone can see that. People are just telling you that they find it a silly, immature, attention-seeking one.

Lordfrontpaw · 08/02/2020 09:18

When people say ‘gender netural’ I think of the old action men and their smooth bulge free undercarriages...

Bananabixfloof · 08/02/2020 09:19

@Eckhart
Ok your trying to prove that you can remember to be nice and call the correct people by the correct pronouns.
So for future references my pronouns on this board anywhere;- I, me, mine.
So if you see me anywhere on mumsnet I want you to refer to me with those pronouns ta.
Anyone else want to add theirs?

Eckhart · 08/02/2020 09:20

That's fine, but remind me if I forget. There's a lot of people here, so I probably will at some point. Thanks.

Findumdum1 · 08/02/2020 09:21

Yes and dont forget to report any slip ups to the moderators immediately like the OPs line manager did.

Eckhart · 08/02/2020 09:23

Aren't a lot of people on this board women? How does everybody manage to refer to each other without having a 2 way linguistic separation splitting us down the middle?

NotBadConsidering · 08/02/2020 09:25

That's fine, but remind me if I forget. There's a lot of people here, so I probably will at some point

How many times are you allowed to forget before we ask MNHQ to ban you? Should you get a number of official warnings first? Should there be a hearing before you are banned? Even if you do it accidentally but have been told repeatedly how everyone wants to be referred, should we be allowed to report you? If Her Highness Kittens isn’t on a thread but I see you refer to Her Highness as something else, can I report on Her Highness’s behalf?

Just need to know the framework we all need to work within now.
Thanks.

When people are getting sacked over someone else's silliness then it's time for it to stop. Pisstaking is a fine British tradition and an excellent way of venting one's irritation. How very odd that someone would get so het up about that!

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/02/2020 09:27

Also on Tuesdays my pronouns are meow, meowser, and meowself. Do try to remember or I'll be forced to give PC Gul a ring.

Eckhart · 08/02/2020 09:29

Did somebody get sacked or threatened with it? As I read it, OP wrote an email and copied management in, and Line manager responded, including a simple reminder of the pronouns (not a threat), continuing to copy the same people in.

Have I missed something that OP has mentioned about threats and sacking?

Ronnie27 · 08/02/2020 09:30

Pronoun: he he

Lordfrontpaw · 08/02/2020 09:31

You could say ‘he/she/it’. Let them pick the bones out of that.

TheMemoryLingers · 08/02/2020 09:34

NotBadConsidering The article you've linked describes the transgender person being dismissed, for, amongst other things, using the term "TERF" online. The councillor's claim of transphobia has been rejected. I'm not sure why you think this is an example of gender-neutral pronouns being inappropriate in the office.

74NewStreet · 08/02/2020 09:35

Are you being disingenuous now, Eckhart? You know fine well the threats and sacking do not relate to op’s particular situation.

Findumdum1 · 08/02/2020 09:37

Come on how can you not find this hilariously ridiculous. People who cant speak English grammatically correctly to start with (they bought themself a coke) trying to make up completely new rules that nobody could actually use of follow (ze bought zerself a coke? ze bought hirself a coke? ze bought zerselves a coke?)

And for what purpose? Language is meant to evolve and change organically to increase understanding. Not to be forcibly mangled to prove how woke some pampered, privileged people without more pressing things to worry about are.

Eckhart · 08/02/2020 09:38

@74NewStreet I didn't know that. I thought the thread was about the original post. Do you know of someone who has been sacked for misu-use of pronouns?

74NewStreet · 08/02/2020 09:40

Who actually came up with ve and ze, I wonder? And who the fuck are they, that they managed to insert it into the public consciousness?
Why are we allowing the lunatics to run the asylum?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 08/02/2020 09:42

Too many zees and zirs and you end up sounding like the chef from The Muppets.

NotBadConsidering · 08/02/2020 09:42

TheMemoryLingers

I linked that article because it’s the first article that comes up on Google to tell you who Gregor Murray is. The rest of the article isn’t particularly relevant. The article allows you to see who that person is. Maya Forstater apparently misgendered that person by using a male pronoun. Maya does not work with Murray. Maya’s misgendering was complained about by a person who also doesn’t work with Maya. As a result of this, Maya lost her job. This has set a legal precedent that even IF the OP misgenders only by accident, a random person could complain about it and the OP could lose her job as a result.

This is why involvement of managers and HR in workplace settings over the subject of misgendering and pronouns is not as simple as shrugging your shoulders and thinking it’s a benign part of the work environment at the moment.

joffreyscoffees · 08/02/2020 09:42

I find it odd you'd refer to anyone as 'she' in an email.. surely you'd use a persons name?! Especially if they're in the trail themselves.

It costs nothing to respect people's wishes. If you worked where I do, then yes, there are guidelines in our policies. Nothing enforceable but it's definitely something the organisation thinks about.

Catsfriend · 08/02/2020 09:44

Can we all just concentrate on helping the OP come up with a solution?

Findumdum1 · 08/02/2020 09:46

It costs me a lot to refer to a singular person with the plural pronoun they, trust me. Thats why I would use Angela throughout.

They/them/theirs pronoun people make me thing of some sort of creepy hive mind collective cult, so I'd probably refer to them as 7 of 9 in my own head.

Xanthangum · 08/02/2020 09:47

Wait, there's more... perself! Humself! Make up your own, go for it....
