I know there is a split of opinion about spoiling ballots vs voting for the least bad option.

If you do decide to spoil your ballot it feel free to post a photo of it here (be careful not to include any information that identifies you and in particular not to include the ballot's unique identification number) in case any of our loitering journalists wish to pick up the story or in the hope of giving the parties/candidates some pause for thought.

In case it is of interest (and you want a place to post your views for/against spoiling ballots), there have been a number of threads about spoiling ballots, a few links below:

Spoiled my ballot for first time ever. 'Woman = Adult Human Female'. Difficult but I'm in a v safe seat so not so hard a choice for me.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 12:28

Apple rtft and consider the numerous answers to this question already asked. Or if you are just coming here to tell us naughty women off you can buzz off too. Feel free to start your own thread, in the appropriate forum, about naughty naughty women who have disappointed you and leave the ones about spoiling votes to people who are doing so, considering doing so, or can respect that we are even if they feel they must vote differently.

Melroses · 12/12/2019 12:30

Well I got there with the green and purple pens, but we seem to have had a bit of a rearrangement with the polling station.

Usually it is a bit relaxed and they put the 'booths' (ie flimsy v-shaped cardboard) around a bit table. This time, they put them on single tables spaced out on the wall across the empty room from the door with BIG notices telling you to mark ONE cross, with officers at the side.

So I used the pencil on a string. Took a while but did it.

Do you think they are expecting a bit of ballot paper spoiling?

bellinisurge · 12/12/2019 12:31

"Some minor issue "😂😂😂
How patronising.
Do you seriously think that there is a settled national position on this that everyone has thought about. Or is it being sneaked in under the radar by people trying to distract attention from it. Obviously it's the latter.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 12:32

I'll wear that disappointing woman badge with pride.

The suffragettes and suffragists fought for the right for women to vote. That gives us the right to not vote if we choose not to. I choose not to.

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2019 12:33

A spoiled ballot is still a vote, and its a valid political protest.
Its better than not voting imho.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2019 12:34

This is a daft question, but if I put a cross in the box, and write a message on the ballot paper, will it still count? I want to vote, to send a message to the SNP that I do not support another independence referendum, but there is no other candidate in my constituency that I can support wholeheartedly.

We only have SNP, Tory, Labour and LibDem - there is no way I can vote Tory or SNP, and whilst I agree with some of the policies of the other two, I have major issues with some policies of each of them. The trans issue sticks in my craw when it comes to the LibDems, and I believe that Momentum and JC have taken the Labour party too far left for me (I was raised socialist but see myself very much in the centre ground).

I am heading out to vote soon, and I am still undecided what to do. My gut says LibDem but to put a message on the paper - Woman - Adult human female, probably - but I want my vote counted as opposing Indyref2.

Arghhhhhhhh.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 12/12/2019 12:36

there are more people for a GRC reform then against

Cool story bro.

AppleTree76 · 12/12/2019 12:37

@ShesDressedInBlackAgain are you 12?

Floisme · 12/12/2019 12:38

I rather like the phrase 'disappointing women'.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 12/12/2019 12:38

Just voted

Against every candidate I put a few words why I wasn't voting for them

Conservative- brexit
Labour - lily madigan
Lib Dem's - Aimee challinor
Greens - same as Lib Dem's

Then I put at the bottom

Transwomen are men, women do not have penises. Protect women's sex based rights.

Husband did similar

GCAcademic · 12/12/2019 12:39

I spoilt my ballot. I'd thought about voting Conservative over the last 24 hours, but my Tory MP has told me that she completely agrees with me and has lots of concerns (as do her teenaged daughters, apparently) but that she is not going to speak publicly about this until it's possible to have a more sensible national conversation about it. So that will be never. And I can only therefore assume that she wouldn't vote against GRA reform if it came to it. I can't vote for such appalling cowardice. It's much worse than ignorance of the subject, in my book.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 12/12/2019 12:40

This is a daft question, but if I put a cross in the box, and write a message on the ballot paper, will it still count?

Pretty sure that'd count as spoiling your vote.
Cross in the box and nothing else in order to count as far as I know
(Happy to be corrected)

bellinisurge · 12/12/2019 12:41

I think that if you put a cross against a name it will be counted for that name. Or if there is a dispute it would ultimately be counted.
I think we all have to face the fact that candidates are unlikely to actually read anything we put on a paper. I think we have to go for "numbers of spoiled papers ".
It's possible that a candidate might ask themselves "why did that voter turn out but not chose anyone "? And they might look at what is actually written. Most likely they will not.
But you do what your conscience tells you is the right thing to do. Whatever that is. If it isn't spoiling your ballot, consider something else. Write to the person elected as your MP. Write to the leader of the party you didn't vote for.

LangCleg · 12/12/2019 12:41

Because some minor issue that you will never be able to change because there are more people for a GRC reform then against.

Between 67% and 83% of the population is against GRA reform to self-ID. This definition of "more" is indicative of your understanding of this topic.

Why do you want us to cast votes in favour of sterilising girls who are autistic, proto-lesbian, or are carrying trauma from sexual abuse?

PJsatMidday · 12/12/2019 12:45

STDG there is no hard or fast answer to that question. Anything other than a single X against a single name is technically a spoiled ballot. However, if it's a close run thing resulting in a recount, a ballot such as yours might be claimed by the candidate against whose name you put a X. It would be up to the other candidates to argue that is is not a valid vote.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/12/2019 12:45

And even fewer than that will be in favor once they understand what it means. Which is why some were rather hoping to prevent that from happening.

Must sting to see "no debate" failing.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2019 12:48

Thanks @PJsatMidday, @bellinisurge and @WotchaTalkinBoutWillis.

I'm going to have to decide when I get there.

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 12/12/2019 12:59

@ShesDressedInBlackAgainare you 12?

Grin

No. And one way I demonstrate my huge maturity is by not making shit up in order to manipulate people in such a transparent fashion that my six year old could see it.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 12/12/2019 13:03

I have never done this before. But couldn’t bring myself to vote Tory for obvious reasons and certainly couldn’t vote for any other of my options.

PJsatMidday · 12/12/2019 13:05

Momentum are out in force today!

Funny how there's nobody on this and the other thread about spoiling ballots demanding we vote for the Tories. It's always the same, you must vote to get the Tories out . Not, you should vote to exercise your democratic right to be counted. Except that I will be counted, because a protest vote is still a vote.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 13:08

If they are expecting ballot spoiling then it’s obvious that discussions here and else where, and emailing candidates about intent to spoil are getting out.

I just lost the fucking plot (I have a number of other personal things I am super upset about this last few weeks, normally I can have reasonable conversations with canvassers) at a Lib Dem candidate who just turned up on my door step. He stood far back, ‘oh hi incase you don’t know it’s voting day today’ (fucking patronising) and then I said ‘go to hell you fucking bigot’ (like I said lost the plot) and he looked like he was expecting that, no confusion on his face, no questions as to why, and my daughter asked whose that and I answered ‘a man who hates women’ and again it was like he expected it. So I’d guess some are getting the message, they may not like the message but they get the amount of women who will not vote for them based on self ID stance. I’d class that as a really good outcome of spoiling, and more than expected imo as being able to live with myself knowing I supported any party who erased my daughters rights was my reason for not voting for any candidate available.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/12/2019 13:09

Momentum are out in force today!

They brought this on themselves. They deliberately and purposely shat all over women and are now whining that the same women won't vote for them?

I don't know how they have the nerve, frankly.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 13:10

They're out in force on my local Facebook group. It's relentless. If I was a floating voter their behaviour would have put me off of voting labour.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 12/12/2019 13:16

Momentum are almost as responsible for longtime Labour voters not wanting to vote for them as self ID is. How can they possible admit that? If they did they'd have to stop doing what they're doing.
