Andrea Catherwood (?) interviewing and being quite tigerish. Seems to be in a mood to take no shit.

OP posts:

Yes, I'm imagining Emma Barnett and Emily Maitlis and Jenni Murray and Sarah Montague and Kirsty Wark all in a What's App group, coordindating manoeuvres. Apologies and congratulations to all those anonymous women behind the scenes who have been involved too.

Jane Garvey, unfortunately, continues to be something of a let-down. She's asked a few questions but she hasn't followed through in the way that Barnett did just now and she's left me wondering a few times whether she really gets it. I think she may be too invested in her reputation for being wryly clever in a slightly-but-not-too-dangerous way to be prepared to step up and deliver what Barnett just did. For every time I've thought 'Yes!' when Garvey's asked an awkward question there's been at least one groan as she's dropped the ball and let some fairly outrageous statement go unchallenged. I suspect there's a lot of eye-rolling going on while she's interviewing some young artist from Brighton whose every other word is 'gender' but we can't see the eye-rolling on the radio.

ThePurported · 06/12/2019 11:17

JH's tweet is a ludicrous conspiracy theory. Really not helpful.

TruthOnTrial · 06/12/2019 11:18

Womens shelters and safe spaces radio 4 now

° and losing frankly^

Today 10:21 TruthOnTrial

copied a post I put on a wrong thread just now.

Shes being very insistent about this and pushing the EA

Today 10:22 TruthOnTrial

Oh wow!

What kind of feminist are you! The kind that doesn't report male abuse as minister!

Today 10:22 TruthOnTrial

Womens and equality minister 'went to ground' instead of speaking up

Today 10:23 TruthOnTrial

She's on the rails, totally

Today 10:28 AppleBlossomTimeNow

She just can't form a cogent argument in favour of the proposed reform.

Today 10:32 TruthOnTrial

I was busy on a call and missed the first part of it. So annoying.

I was, for once, impressed at the womens rights being stood up for though by womans hour, against admitting mtf into refuge, and the womens and equalities minister trampling on women to centre mtf.

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 11:18

This is dynamite - have LibDem's biggest donors (a facial feminisation surgery healthcare provider) managed to influence policy? - Policy that disregards the safety and sex-based rights of women

That’s an interesting revelation. Do you think the BBC’s forthright questioning suggests a tipping point in the media coverage of this?

rodgmum · 06/12/2019 11:19

@theflushedzebra Jean has just found even more (thanks to @elizabethceast on Twitter)

twitter.com/jeanhatchet/status/1202901925777346561?s=21

£100k last month by a pharmaceutical company that markets a puberty blocker.

Should this have its own thread? I had a look and couldn’t see a separate thread but didn’t want to duplicate if there is one.

Oldstyle · 06/12/2019 11:20

First Emily, now Emma. They are really going for it at long last. What a cheering couple of days.

frazzled I'm with you but I think it has to be Labour. They are at last having this discussion at the top; they have taken GRA reform out of their manifesto; they have promised to uphold women's sex-based rights. The Tory alternative would be catastrophic for society as a whole.

Jolonglegs · 06/12/2019 11:20

Oh dear Jo, your performance in that interview was terrible. Do you really not understand the issues.

clitherow · 06/12/2019 11:21

That’s an interesting revelation. Do you think the BBC’s forthright questioning suggests a tipping point in the media coverage of this?

I'd be very wary. These people are slipperier than a vaselined eel

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 11:23

I'm sure I read something the other day that political lobbying will be the next big political scandal? Maybe off the back of the Spectator article on Dentons?

TruthOnTrial · 06/12/2019 11:24

Totally conflict of interest

Lib dems jistt now look completely like hopeless hapless paid puppets.

How to destroy democratic process lib dems.

Fucking awful

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 11:24

Always follow the money.

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 11:27

I'd be very wary. These people are slipperier than a vaselined eel
Grin

Quite so. But I think that it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the BBC to ignore this. Maya and Harry’s cases have been getting serious coverage especially in The Telegraph, Spectator. I am hoping the media have finally woken up to this

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 11:29

I'm sure I read something the other day that political lobbying will be the next big political scandal?

I can’t remember who posted it, think it was Lang, but apparently it’s what David Cameron said.

RoyalCorgi · 06/12/2019 11:30

JH's tweet is a ludicrous conspiracy theory.

You reckon? The fact the Lib Dems are receiving money from pharma companies with an interest in making money from trans people is pure coincidence?

Could be right. Could be that Swinson is morally pure and just very very stupid.

TruthOnTrial · 06/12/2019 11:32

Buying political parties should have political party excluded for undemocratic process.

You muppets lib dems.

Jo has been bloody marvellous today Smile

Love her for showing the world how wrong it all is, she brought it into the light perfectly for everyone to see.

Loving the crew that are insisting on answers to their eminently answerable questions Grin

There have now been some corkers. These things were foretold, and it is coming to pass.

Birdsfoottrefoil · 06/12/2019 11:33

I'd love to know what is going on at the BBC. It seems to be a complete about face

Possibly because of the general election - they are under tighter reporting rules at the moment. Hopefully the momentum will keep them going past next Wednesday

BovaryX · 06/12/2019 11:34

You reckon? The fact the Lib Dems are receiving money from pharma companies with an interest in making money from trans people is pure coincidence?

Isn’t it a conflict of interest? That the Lib Dems are forcefully promoting the agenda of a shadowy, powerful lobby group which avoids public scrutiny? Conspiracy? I hope James Kirkup continues his excellent coverage

RaymondStopThat · 06/12/2019 11:36

I'm with you but I think it has to be Labour. They are at last having this discussion at the top; they have taken GRA reform out of their manifesto; they have promised to uphold women's sex-based rights.

I don't think it's that clear cut actually. They have committed to introducing self declaration for trans people. And Dawn Butler, the party's shadow equalities secretary has said: 'there is no way spaces will be permitted to discriminate against trans people. That is illegal and it will stay illegal'.

On a more positive note, top work by Emma Barnett by the sound of it.

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 11:39

There's a culture war going on at the beeb, between women who think TWAW, and those who, er, don't. It's been reported.

TheShoesa · 06/12/2019 11:42

zebra, bovary it was Lang who posted this from 2010:

www.telegraph.co.uk/news/election-2010/7189466/David-Cameron-warns-lobbying-is-next-political-scandal.html

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/12/2019 11:45

I think it has to be Labour. They are at last having this discussion at the top; they have taken GRA reform out of their manifesto; they have promised to uphold women's sex-based rights

Look at the small print though. In essence, Labour have said:

  • they will make self ID easy, so anyone can be a woman
  • women's spaces will be kept for women
  • that means both kinds of women
  • single sex will become single gender (mixed sex)

The sneaky underhandedness of that makes me think even worse of them than I did before. At least previously they were blatant about their misogyny. Now they are trying to conceal it.

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 11:46

Thanks, Shoesa.
