Andrea Catherwood (?) interviewing and being quite tigerish. Seems to be in a mood to take no shit.

Brilliant interview by Emma Barnett - not just on self id but also Lord Renard. I liked the point about 'even lawyers disagree on the Equality Act' in terms of access with GRC. It is not a simple piece of tidying legislation.

I noted Jo Swinson used the same argument about a woman and her abuser not being placed in the same refuge as the spokesperson on the Today programme the other week. Who thought up that as a good response? Hmm

SawingForTeens · 06/12/2019 10:41

WOW!! Great interview. Swinson was destroyed. Interviewer was not to be deflected either. Right questions asked, and repeated if not answered. No 'two minutes at end of program' this time. So refreshing!!

Message to Jo Swinson: I AM NOT CIS!! FOTTFSOFATFOSM

venus22 · 06/12/2019 10:42

Absolutely brilliant interviewing by Emma Barnett; journalism at it’s very best.
Swinson was embarrassingly bad; really unimpressive.

AbsintheFriends · 06/12/2019 10:43

Hate incidents being discussed now...

Is Emma Barnett a MNer, do you think?

TiredofthisBS · 06/12/2019 10:45

Emma 'take no prisoners' Barnett! Jo Swinson floundered. Came across as completely incompetent.

Justhadathought · 06/12/2019 10:45

A terrible performance by Joe Swinson - for the reason that TWAW does not stand up to scrutiny. Totally reliant on mantras such as " There is not a hierarchy of equality". Emma Barnett's response to that was a brilliant, " But you are creating a hierarchy of equality, aren't you?".

"Cis" this "cis" that.......when talking about trans issues, but then back to plain old "woman", when talking about everything else. It's like she knows the difference......

donquixotedelamancha · 06/12/2019 10:46

Jo Swindon is coming across like a complete idiot

Better than usual then?

Justhadathought · 06/12/2019 10:47

I think anyone who wants to be availed of any alternative to the forced dogma of TWAW et al, has few other options available but to browse Mumsnet. I suspect all sorts of people are now regulars - even if they don't post.

TiredofthisBS · 06/12/2019 10:48

A lot of people don't know what Cis is. The listeners are going to be wondering WTF why does she keep referring to me as such.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/12/2019 10:48

Until now, I had thought Jo Swinson was a harmless gullible idiot.

Having listened to her on this, I now think she is an anti-woman hateful tryhard who will sell her morals to the highest bidder

thatdamnwoman · 06/12/2019 10:49

I've just emailed Emma Barnett to congratulate her on one of the clearest, hardest-hitting interviews I've heard on WH for ages. Jane Garvey could learn a thing or two. If anyone else would like to let Emma know what they thought you can email WH here:

[email protected]

Good stuff. And I agree with the OP that Emma and Andrea Catherwood sound similar.

jhuizinga · 06/12/2019 10:50

What an incoherent mess that interview was for Jo Swinson. She really came across as a dim wit, and a self-righteous one at that. The interviewer was great but every time JS said risk assessments could be carried out I wanted the point made that society has made a risk assessment and has concluded that women (females) as a class are at risk from men (males) as a class. What is different now that means this is no longer the case?

TiredofthisBS · 06/12/2019 10:53

I'd love to know what is going on at the BBC. It seems to be a complete about face.

StillWeRise · 06/12/2019 10:59

just emailed WH, we all need to do this. They may even read out comments.

AbsintheFriends · 06/12/2019 10:59

I guess they just couldn't slink along behind a veil of woke anymore. The scales are falling from people's eyes all over the place. Anyone who won't acknowledge the issues needs to be able to have good justification for not doing so, and I imagine WH realised that they really couldn't ignore it and still claim to fulfil their brief. They must be aware that the 'nothing to see here' position isn't going to age well.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in production meetings this past year though.

Absolutely brilliant interview! She came across as a right idiot!

Have emailed Woman's Hour to send my congratulations!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 06/12/2019 11:06

A point of interest was that they wrote and approved the manifesto all gung ho, but without even knowing the numbers behind it.

I although thought the Childcare angle was indeed a weird lens to focus their whole woman-friendly policies on. Sure there are a lot of mums, but there are probably a LOT more people who are either past motherhood, not interested in motherhood or who simply don't know/don't care about childcare as the hook to hang everything on.

It came across as one of those things someone casually says at the start of a workshop and then it becomes gospel. "What are women interested in?" "Ummm, I dunno, kids? Childcare? I'll write it on the whiteboard for now" - and then it never got revisited again.

RoyalCorgi · 06/12/2019 11:06

I think it's a handful of intelligent, determined gc women making the case. The BBC is full of TRAs, so it's been hard, but they're getting there. At some point, the Beeb must have realised they couldn't ignore what was happening elsewhere - we have to thank Janice Turner, James Kirkup and others for leading the way on this.

theflushedzebra · 06/12/2019 11:07

I've emailed my thanks to Emma Barnett.

This has been posted on another thread - twitter.com/JeanHatchet/status/1202625641360871424?s=19

This is dynamite - have LibDem's biggest donors (a facial feminisation surgery healthcare provider) managed to influence policy? - Policy that disregards the safety and sex-based rights of women.

frazzled1 · 06/12/2019 11:09

Fantastic interview Emma Barnett - dreadful by Jo Swinson.

As a prospective PM, how can Jo Swinson be unaware of the huge differences in offending rates between the SEXES. Violent lesbians attacking their partner in a women's refuge Jo? Care to provide any stats to compare with male violence? Good grief. Does she actually believe humans can change sex, TWAW etc....

Astounding lack of empathy that women in refuges need space away from and are traumatised by the mere presence of MALE BODIED PEOPLE whatever their 'gender identity'. Before we even consider MALE violence.

Dear oh dear. No idea who to vote for.

Angryresister · 06/12/2019 11:11

Commented on other thread and emailed. Looks as though people’s eyes will be opened ...hope they read out letters tomorrow as they said they would be coming back but didn’t.

RoyalCorgi · 06/12/2019 11:14

This is dynamite - have LibDem's biggest donors (a facial feminisation surgery healthcare provider) managed to influence policy.

I think that must be true. Is Jo Swinson really so stupid that she doesn't understand women's concerns over this? Or is she in the pocket of her party's biggest donors? My guess would be the latter - either way it doesn't look good.

My comments on other thread from earlier

TruthOnTrial

^It was appalling on her part, but yes, I am blown away at the stance and ferocity of fight from WH!

Tide turn.

I haven't heard this kind of reality from them since Jenny Murray.
