The critics of SAHMs obviously would never have subscribed to the Wages for Housework Campaign.

As a woman who is hopeless at housework, like my mother before me, and am not very clever at keeping children entertained, I have every admiration for the work involved in running a house and looking children. It actually requires a lot of talent and specialist skills.

To my mind, there is nothing more patriarchal than denigrating the work that keeps the world turning round just because it is traditionally women's work.

I'm a SAHM. What is it I need to do now to qualify as a feminist? Is it something to do with white supremacy?

There is good discussion to be had about why the childcare generally defaults to women, and (I think this is even worse) where both parents work FT and the woman still does the lion's share of the childcare/housework- and why so-called "woman's work" seems to be under-valued. But it's not really a discussion for this thread.

But saying degrading things about "housewives" or "scary 1950s housewife persona" just because you don't like a woman who happens to be a sahm is certainly not feminism.

Well yes in the 70s when I and other women my age had bouncy resilient breasts. Nowadays sadly brad are too essential to burn.
A bit of a derail but do women still say "Charleys dead" when their slip is showing or do women no longer wear slips? I dont as i live in trousers (does this mean I have to use the gents toilet).

FWIW I once told my 70 yo aunt about Posie and the Disrespectful Woman remarks and she yelled "I want a tshirt with disrespectful woman on it". This is a woman who had to have her brother sign for a tv lease in the seventies and was quizzed on who would "look after her children" when she applied to a degree as a mature student and single mother.
