The Guardian... Blind Date 23 November

Backinthecloset123 · 26/11/2019 04:10

I post this aware that I might get a warning.

However!

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/nov/23/blind-date-jen-anna-glasses-fog-up

The woman, a lesbian, Anna (and the Guardian readership) did not reveal that Jen is a trans woman.

The whole thing is gaslighting.
And I may be deleted for that sentence.
There is a good thread on Twitter which I'll link.

If I was a lesbian woman and had registered to participate in this blind dates columns, I would 100% expect that the newspaper would respect my sexual orientation and pair me with another lesbian female.

If this is not a misogynistic, homophobic powerplay, then I look forward to seeing an Alex Drummond-alike bandwidth-expanding "woman" paired up with an alpha male heterosexual man.

Come on Guardian, you know it's woke!

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 07:43

Cis lesbians are not human beings

Was that on Twitter? What is wrong with these people? The misogyny and homophobia is off the charts

TheNameGames · 26/11/2019 07:48

Yes it was, Bovary, and I flagged and reported it as abusive, others with accounts might want to do the same.

Datun · 26/11/2019 07:48

Does it not cross their minds that everyone will be imagining the reverse scenario, transman and unwitting gay man, and will instantly see the misogyny in knowing they'd never, ever do it.

But now, of course, it wouldn't surprise me if they did. And the gay man was 'fine', nothing to see here.

Awful paper

HandsOffMyRights · 26/11/2019 07:49

If she has been purposely duped by The Guardian, disregarding her sexuality, sex and safety and is now facing a public backlash then this has been incredibly damaging.

She's been compromised morally and potentially put at risk. Would she have any grounds legally to sue the misogynistic and homophobic arse off The Guardian?

The more I think about this, the worse it gets.

onalongsabbatical · 26/11/2019 07:51

Fuck me I support the Guardian with actual money every month from my bank - that's stopping today and I'll tell them why too. Bastards. Unbelievable.

TanteRose · 26/11/2019 07:52

its so massively homophobic!

GCAcademic · 26/11/2019 08:01

They should get Owen Jones to do it, seeing as he’s so inclusive and all that. Oh, except it turns out that he actually isn’t.

Datun · 26/11/2019 08:05

After she cancelled the second date, turns out the woman was 'really bad at replying to messages'. Wouldn't respond for eight hours apparently.

Honestly. There can't be this number of people on the planet who genuinely think others won't see this for what it is.

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/11/2019 08:16

WTF

pachyderm · 26/11/2019 08:18

Jesus! They have compromised this young woman's safety. We all know what these fucking deranged incels can be like. I really hope she takes this further.

Coldwatershock · 26/11/2019 08:19

Agree with all this, outrageous and yes I too await the Date where a male turns up to meet a TW without warning. I think a pig just flew over...but this may not be straightforward... Anna reports they 'had a snog outside the station'. And yes I wonder if she ticked 'pan' or somesuch as Notbad suggests. Jen's reaction shows Anna dodged a bullet there. Anyone behaving with such entitlement and disrespect is to be given a wide berth regardless of 'identity'...

Ereshkigal · 26/11/2019 08:20

What else does she read that she thinks the Guardian is anywhere NEAR leading on writing stuff or reasonable about this?

She's American. They have had the occasional "balanced" article in the UK Guardian. Much to the anger of their woke US colleagues.

Councilworker · 26/11/2019 08:24

Jen's answers are painfully cutesy twee. So affected. It's like reading a computer trying to do manic dream pixie girl.
Absolutely shocking that the Guardian has put a woman in this position. No woman owes anyone a date. Especially not a lesbian with a male.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 26/11/2019 08:26

This is so shocking, and so telling that they've never done any of the other possibilities here:

Trans woman, i.e. biological male, attracted to males, sent on a date with another bio male who is expecting to be paired with a bio female

Trans man, i.e. biological female, attracted to males, sent on a date with a bio male who is expecting to be paired with a gay man of the biological male variety

The one they might risk is sending a trans man, i.e. biological female, attracted to females on a date with a straight woman expecting to be paired with a biological male. Once again the straight woman would probably be unfailingly polite to avoid hurting the other person's feelings.

doradoo · 26/11/2019 08:36

I saw the article at the weekend and from the photo you could see a very obvious Adam's apple- how the guardian could claim they didn't know is beyond me

SophoclesTheFox · 26/11/2019 08:36

A new low for the guardian, managing to fail to clear the dizzyingly low bar for implicit homophobia and misogyny that they’ve set themselves.

When are they going to start springing surprise male bodies on dates with straight men then shaming them all over social media for baulking at lady penis, hmm? Isn’t it weird how it doesn’t play out like that? It’s almost like...almost like...women’s sexuality is fair game for men to define or something mad like that! A real head scratcher.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/11/2019 08:37

I don't know how these Guardian blind dates work - is it possible that they Guardian genuinely didn't know? Presume the transwoman would have given gender female, sexual orientation lesbian?

Ereshkigal · 26/11/2019 08:39

Isn't it just?

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 26/11/2019 08:44

The Guardian sends a lesbian on a date with a male-is it the 70’s again?

Lesbian conversion is pretty retro, like parquet flooring

Floisme · 26/11/2019 08:48

is it possible that they Guardian genuinely didn't know?
I was wondering that too, because I'm really struggling to process how any half decent person could possibly think this was ok. But if they genuinely didn't know, why aren't they apologising profusely and promising to review their practices?

Poor, poor woman Thanks

Birdsfoottrefoil · 26/11/2019 08:49

Next up should be a straight bloke and a transwoman

Next up should be one ‘lesbian’ transwoman on a blind date with another ‘lesbian’ transwoman.

ChanChanChan · 26/11/2019 08:55

Hold on, but if Jen didn't disclose the fact that Jen is trans to The Guardian, at what point would the Guardian and Anna have found this out - to have been able to give Anna the choice?

I don't know how the Blind Date process works, but obviously Jen should absolutely have disclosed Jen's trans status from the start. Anna (anybody in fact) should have been given the choice before she was ever publicly identifiable. The Guardian are fully at fault for having put Anna in this awful position where she is now undeservedly shamed on the Internet by some people (and potentially threatened).

littlbrowndog · 26/11/2019 08:56

Was the guardian doing an experiment on Anna to see if she would notice ?

It’s terrible thing to do if she wasn’t told that her date would be a TW

Just awful.

Why would they think that is ok to do this

zanahoria · 26/11/2019 08:56

We don't know what the Lesbian thinks but we do know that the transwoman has started harrassing her on twitter. The Giardian has helped created that situation by bowing down to the narcicist ideology that transwomen are women, by replacing sex with gender. They have lead the transwoman to believe that women would be interested in dating transwomen. They are completely and utterly responsible.

The very least they can do now is make their rules explocit.

What are their definitions of Lesbian

will they allow female. only couples

or are they Lesbophobes?

Similar questions could hypothetically apply to gay men and straight people but lets be serious, we know who they are targetting.
