Do you think "International Men's Day" is insulting to women's rights?

It's today apparently.

Isn't it like having a "White person's day"?

Honestly, not really. Men can raise awareness about the things that affect them. Will some percentage of them use it as an excuse to rail against feminism? Sure. But then it's the opinion I am bothered about, not the idea of having a spear counterpart to IWD.

Hoolahlah66 · 19/11/2019 00:23

I don’t really know why we need all of these mundane international days for anyone.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 19/11/2019 00:26

Not at all.

HypatiaCade · 19/11/2019 00:28

How on earth is it insulting to women? Are men not allowed to talk about issues that solely affect them?

Justajot · 19/11/2019 00:30

It does slightly remind me of being asked on Mother's Day, "but why isn't there a Children's Day?" With the obvious answer that "every day is Children's Day".

Endofthedays · 19/11/2019 00:31

It is a good idea to have a day to raise awareness of issues that particularly have an impact on men.

OccasionalKite · 19/11/2019 00:31

No problem at all! Why can't men have one day a year when they can celebrate being men!

traceyracer · 19/11/2019 00:37

btw I was a little amused to learn that the UN does not even recognise "International Men's Day" at all, but it does recognise Nov 19th as International Toilet Day.

Happy International Toilet day folks! Grin

Mother’s’ day is for children. That’s where the tradition comes from. It’s the day children were given off work to visit their mother.

It’s a day for children and their mother to be together.

Endofthedays · 19/11/2019 00:40

There are specific human rights to sanitation. That’s why the UN have a day for it.

AutumnRose1 · 19/11/2019 00:48

“ I don’t really know why we need all of these mundane international days for anyone”

This.

NotTerfNorCis · 19/11/2019 00:52

In theory it's ok, but it wouldn't exist if it wasn't for IWD which is about supporting a traditionally marginalised group. Men as a class aren't marginalised. It also has strong associations with MRAs for me.

Clearnightsky · 19/11/2019 00:57

I don’t have a problem with it.

OccasionalKite · 19/11/2019 01:14

How are we meant to celebrate International Men's Day?

EBearhug · 19/11/2019 01:21

I celebrate it by saying, "Happy International Men's Day!" to my colleagues, so they can look at me as if I've grown a second head. Their confusion amuses me, so I shall do it again this year.

`No it's useful if only because when (on International Women's Day) all the thousands of men take to social media to moan 'when is there going to be a Men's Day?' we can say 'look here it is now shut up'.

I'm sure it's also useful for awareness raising of issues mentioned above but let's face it a lot of men don't care about having their own day they just don't want women to have ours.

Endofthedays · 19/11/2019 01:53

Circumcision is a completely unnecessary surgery.

OccasionalKite · 19/11/2019 02:20

Not even a cake recipe and decoration???!!!

Goosefoot · 19/11/2019 02:46

Well, lots of women don't care much about Women's day, either. So I'd not expect all men to care about a mens day.

In any case I don't think all these special days are useful or really do much to raise awareness, but it doesn't bother me.

QuestionTheDaddy · 19/11/2019 02:51

I'm a man and I'm proud to say that I've never heard of "international mens day". I think I'll stick to the good ol' traditional Fathers/Mothers day.

There are too many holidays to count these days, it's quite pathetic and a waste of thought. Even so, my answer to you is that no, another holiday dedicated to men shouldn't affect the opposite gender. If it does, then sure - you be you.

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 19/11/2019 06:30

I have no problem with International Men's Day. I think its a good idea. You get the usual idiots eith their whataboutery but there are a lot of men out there who do use it to raise awareness of issues that predominantly affect men. I'm quite happy to support it.
I also very much support any campaign to stop male circumcision. It's not the same as FGM and I don't think a comparison is helpful, but it's still a horrific practice.

SimonJT · 19/11/2019 06:37

I went to a really good talk about toxic masculinity last night with Keegan Hirst.

How can raising awareness of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health awareness be insulting?

CosmoK · 19/11/2019 06:41

I'm as feminist as they come and I'm not the least bit insulted about this.

As already mentioned there are issues that need highlighting and addressing. How can that be a bad thing?
