Do you think "International Men's Day" is insulting to women's rights?

It's today apparently.

Isn't it like having a "White person's day"?

I think it’s an internationalisation of the Russian holiday, isn’t it? In Russia mens’ day is like Father’s Day but you also show appreciation to men who are not your father e.g. your uncle.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/11/2019 15:25

Isn't it international men day, everyday anyway.

Yawn

traceyracer · 19/11/2019 15:40

Well re guys asking "Why isn't there an Int. Men's day?" on Int. Women's day, I can understand that.

If you don't already know Nov 19th is Int. Men's day then it can very easily come and go. The big websites like Google, Youtube and Social Media don't do anything for Men's day and as I mentioned on the UN's list of official International days, Men's isn't listed.

Most of the International Days on the UN list come and go without anyone paying attention.
Sorry I missed World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims on Monday...

GroggyLegs · 19/11/2019 15:54

I agree with everything deydododat says above, men absolutely do have sex specific issues that deserve attention, and if an international men's day leads to improvements in men's physical & mental health, it can only be good for everyone.

But IWD is a success because women are happy to do the shit work to organise their events.

Sadly, i just can't invisage many men getting together at a community centre to sort out who's doing the tea & coffee & baking a sponge for their IMD event.

Inebriati · 19/11/2019 16:01

Tracey, do you actually have any argument about why you think it's insulting? Is Fathers Day an insult to mothers? Is a penile cancer group an insult to women?

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 16:06

What's your position here, traceyracer? Do you think IMD is insulting to women's rights, or do you think it's scandalously overlooked? One minute you're giggling away about circumcision, the next you're complaining that nobody celebrates IMD. Anyone would think you're just trying to goad some feminists into saying nasty stuff about men or something...

traceyracer · 19/11/2019 16:13

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper, I almost find your post a little goady so I'm not going to engage.

Classic...

This is what's meant by DARVO, right?

traceyracer · 19/11/2019 16:25

DARVO?

gosh, what a surprise

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 19/11/2019 16:37

DARVO

start thread inviting others to be mean about men
when this is pointed out, accuse the pointer outer of being goady

tick tick tick

MsRomanoff · 19/11/2019 16:46

Long story short; leave the decision making of circumcision to us males. We know what we're doing

If it was only adult males that were opting for it, no one would have an issue and let you get on with it. But as it impacts children, its every bodies issue.

Definitely think circumcision, unless for medical reasons, needs banishing for minors.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 19/11/2019 16:51

I wasn't quite sure what to make of that post MsRomanoff. The phrasing leaves me unsure as to whether he meant 'let each individual man decide for himself when he's of an age' which I absolutely agree with or whether he meant 'let adult men, but not women, decide on behalf of boys who are too young to make an informed choice' which I am completely opposed to.

No child should have their genitals cut unless there is a functional, physiological problem. Even then circumcision may not be necessary, some issues can be corrected with prepuceplasty and the foreskin retained.

FemaleAndLearning · 19/11/2019 17:00

It's not a UN day it's a UNESCo or something day. I think raising awareness of men's issues is great: suicide, men's cancers etc.

My work chose to make it a day of celebrating men! Such an insult to men and women. I looked it up though and UK mens day does mention suicide but then says basically do what you want do that is what my male dominated work place did! I guess it was all in the name of inclusivity.
Yet they don't understand equality at all.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 17:23

Well, tracey, I only invited you to answer the question that you yourself posed in your OP. If you think that's goady, then I can only assume it was intended to be a goady question. DARVO indeed.

traceyracer · 19/11/2019 17:48

Well call me a "DARVO" if you want but I'd rather stay on topic instead of dropping to name-calling level.

OP posts:
SanFranBear · 19/11/2019 18:05

DARVO:
Deny
Attack
Reverse
Victim
Offender

I've had to point out that IMD has been around since the 90s twice in the last two days in response to 'its about time' comments from male colleagues.. fun times!

Pinkblueberry · 19/11/2019 18:09

I think I do. Men are well celebrated - hence why international women’s day needs to be a thing. I think it’s a bit like if someone set up a ‘white European history month’...

MsRomanoff · 19/11/2019 18:11

@ArnoldWhatshisknickers I was the same. Cant really fathom why a decision as big as circumcision in children should be decided by males. 🤷‍♀️

EBearhug · 19/11/2019 18:12

UNESCO is part of the UN - it's the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Don't think they're responsible for IMD, though.

EoinMcLovesCakeJumper · 19/11/2019 18:14

You're not staying on topic, though. You haven't answered the question. Is there any reason why you don't want to do that? I'm not calling you "a DARVO" but I think you know that really.

HorseWithNoFucksToGive · 20/11/2019 08:17

Tracy (OP) do you think that IMD is "insulting to women's rights"?

(Asking for a friend.)

deydododatdodontdeydo · 20/11/2019 08:22

I think it’s a bit like if someone set up a ‘white European history month’...

Not really. The only reason that would be the case is if it mirrored IWD and celebrated the achievements of men, which it doesn't (or isn't supposed to).
