Drama onwoman's hour.

Is anyone following it? I just caught it at the end of woman's hour in my car this morning so dont know what it was called.

2 trans teens were dating, sharing how they came out etc. All dismissive of the yr 7 cou sellor who suggested they might be lesbian - said in reaponse to how they knew - it was the usual - football/trousers/playing with boys.

Blockers and top surgery werent a big deal - all seemed a seamless story through early teens...

In a way it seemed more dangerous than the debates as it narrates an easy trans experience as the norm, and anyone who disagreed as unreasonable.

Im not the most articulate in unpicking it so wondered if anyone else had heard it?

The thing that annoys me most about this program (not listened to the most recent series but previous ones) is that the transgirl/transwoman is played by a woman. It feels a bit like gaslighting as the trans character sounds very female unlike any other transwoman I have heard on the radio.

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2019 11:37

This drama would be brilliant if they used a male for the main male lead.

This is totally gaslighting a la Coronation Street.

DJLippy · 25/09/2019 11:54

Does anyone have a link or know what it is called can't find on radio 4 website

Cuntysnark · 25/09/2019 12:03

It’ll be the Woman’s Hour listing. Last 15 minutes.

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2019 12:04

Something hilarious like 'Just an ordinary girl', it's the Mermaids drama

vaginafetishist · 25/09/2019 12:06

Ma'am will get into a relationship with a cis guy who will express how they are just like any other girl only somehow better.

SleepwalkingThroughLife · 25/09/2019 12:07

It's called Just A Woman, its on at 10.41, as part of Womans Hour.

The lead actress is Tigger Blaize, im unsure if she is transgender or not.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2019 12:17

It's such a strange 'drama', because there is no drama. It pure propoganda. All fluff and kittens. Everything is lovely and easy and cheerful. Family delighted and encouraging. 'Person skips about enjoying happy teenage life' just isn't very interesting.

Really weird.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2019 12:23

Honestly, thinking about it, I've seen stronger drama, with more tension, complexity and power, on CBeebies.

AbsintheFriends · 25/09/2019 12:23

Exactly that lottie It's also excruciatingly written and awkwardly acted, with lots of cringey 'teen-speak' dialogue. Woeful on every level.

NumberblockNo1 · 25/09/2019 12:24

I only half caught it today but that was the vibe I got - that it was all so straight forward to just "know" you were supposdd to be a boy/take puberty blockers/have surgery and then go on to have a normal relationship. Seemed really unnerving to me.

NumberblockNo1 · 25/09/2019 12:25

And yet everytime a feminist is jnterviewed they have to have a trans person fpr "balance". Where's the balance ti this going out!? Theres no way they'd air a drama about trans surgery going wrong/someone realising they could be a woman in trousers etc...

I haven’t listened to it but did think it odd that womans hour was playing it....when we all know that this trans movement is problematic for women and girls.....perhaps they are doing us a favour though by giving the topic some air.

Herocomplex · 25/09/2019 12:27

It’s not very well written apart from anything, the dialogue is excruciating.

lottiegarbanzo · 25/09/2019 12:58

Yes, it's odd. It's not even up to Afternoon Play standards, which do at least try to do something interesting.

They do other 'issues' dramas perfectly well. Like the Children in Need one about Skye and her little brother. I know I'm being manipulated into thinking about disadvantaged children but the character is good, it's interesting and there's plenty of dramatic tension. Likewise the one about the young couple with learning disabilities.

With this, it's as if they've gone 'well trans is the 'issue' but the whole point is that we're not going to make an issue of it, because being trans is totally fine and normal and that's our point'. Then they've forgotten to insert some other point of tension or interest, necessary to make it a drama. It's like reading the unedited teenage diary of someone who is not particularly interesting.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 25/09/2019 13:02

So the male bodied person is played by a female bodied person? Is that allowed these days?

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 25/09/2019 13:20

In a bizarre twist, twitter reveals that Tigger Blaize is a transman. So Tigger is someone assigned female at birth, living as a man and taking a job playing a person who is assigned Male at birth and living as a woman?

So I can’t work out if Tigger is a man taking work that should be done by a trans woman, or a man taking work from a woman, or a woman taking work from a man, or a transman taking work from a trans woman....

The trans male character is played by a trans male actor. The actor playing main transwoman character doesn't seem to be openly trans, but certainly identifies as 'gender-variant' and does a lot of roles that reflect that. She (I think - pronouns aren't included in twitter bio Shock) has however written about how important it is that trans roles are given to trans people, so I'm not sure what conclusions we can draw from that.

Astonishingly this is the 5th series of this utter non-drama to be aired. I remember in the last one there was a budding romance and the potential boyfriend's mother was GC. Obviously the trans teenager 're-educated' her out of this, as her GC views were of course based solely on ignorance and misinformation. Hmm (It was all too clear that this patronising patient Munroe Bergdorf-esque explanation of why there's absolutely nothing for us to bother our silly heads about was very much for the benefit of the Woman's Hour audience.)

AbsintheFriends · 25/09/2019 13:27

Cross posted workingitoutasIgo! Wow - I there's a twist that went over my head!

Amusingly Tigger is quite vocal about trans actors playing trans people. But clearly it doesn't matter what sex you are, as long as you're identifying as trans www.thestage.co.uk/news/2018/trans-performers-work-agents-casting-directors-address-representation/

Amy has been played by females ever since this awful badly written series of plays started.
