Apparently “gender neutral” means trousers aka the male default. This is utterly insane. I mean I wouldn’t have minded the choice of trousers or skirts for either sex but only trousers?

I'm not seeing how that's relevant in a one-tube-only scenario.

You, me and an entire army of lurkers!

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/09/2019 16:28

This thread is bonkers and yet, I cannot look away Grin where’s Bertrand, she’s sure to have an original solution?

SarahTancredi · 09/09/2019 16:36

Arent we waiting in decomposing's take on contraception still? And what womens options we should scrap so they only have 2 like the men..for equality.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 09/09/2019 16:37

I think all students should be issued a one size fits all tube.

MargueritaBlue · 09/09/2019 16:51

could anyone tell me what major design difference boys need in skirts?

None- disregarding pencil skirts a skirt only has to fit at the waist and be the correct lengt.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2019 16:52

Still waiting for someone to explain why we don't wear skirts for the gym given that they are so practical.

That's exactly what my school pe kit was. Many girls and women playing team sports, tennis etc still use skirts. Perfectly practical.

MargueritaBlue · 09/09/2019 16:52

So why do women need trousers specifically designed for them then? Why don't men and women all just wear the same trousers?

Do you know the difference between boys and girls?

MargueritaBlue · 09/09/2019 17:00

And I'm rolling on the floor at the idea of my belt fitting my husband. Of course there's a difference between men and women's belts - the size for 1 thing

You are easily amused then. The only difference between a "man's belt" and a "woman's belt" is the size and you can't assume which needs to be the larger or smaller.

A belt which fits round someone's waist is a belt- there is no such thing as a"man's belt" or a "woman's belt"

I'm also waiting still for the answer to my question regarding short skirts being more practical than trousers - how come then everyone at the gym/yoga wear trousers and not short skirts?

Straw man. Men and boys don't go to the gym in their everyday clothes either.

DecomposingComposers · 09/09/2019 17:08

Talking about the gym and yoga - if short skirts are more practical than trousers (operative words being more practical) then skirts would be the default option so why aren't they? Why do you not see women doing yoga in skirts?

Do you know the difference between boys and girls?

So why are trousers cut differently for women than men, girls differently to boys? Because the waist and hips are different.

Skirts will be cut in proportion - so a size 14 skirt will be cut accordingly and made so that the waist and hips fit a size 14 body.

In boys and men those ratios will be different.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/09/2019 17:08

It’s weird how this thread is being dominated by how we can give boys better options and design clothes for them etc when this is a feminist board that concerns itself only with women’s and girls rights. I’m not here to make sure boys have exactly the same options as girls. I don’t care if they don’t have skirts designed for them. Women have had bullshit for centuries, why is a feminism board focusing on their needs? Why is anyone indulging the whataboutery?

Do people wear school trousers to the gym in your world? Or do they wear gym kit?

For a tailored, fitted skirt.

These boys look great in their skirts.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2019 17:14

Oh ffs. Some clothes are more practical in some contexts.

If my only choice when doing eg Pilates was my jeans or a short skirt, then the latter would be more practical, if potentially 'immodest' as it wouldn't restrict flexibility. But, fortunately, stretchy leggings exist. However, those aren't practical in other contexts.

In the context of a classroom or office, not performing contortions, some girls and women find skirts more practical than trousers.

You're either daft or deliberately obtuse.

Good question Jess. Its pretty bizarre.

Does anyone else keep getting this lady’s bottom on their phone? It’s a weird thing to advertise on MN, no? Confused

It came up on another thread too a couple of days ago.

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/09/2019 17:22

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/09/2019 17:25

Ereshkigal · 09/09/2019 17:25

I have never seen that woman’s bottom

I reckon its just you Grin

DecomposingComposers · 09/09/2019 17:28

Errol you might want to take issue with fraggling then who said

Incidentally, wearing a very short skirt gives total freedom of movement, way more than trousers or shorts).

So, given that they give total freedom of movement, way more than trousers or shorts why aren't they worn in yoga classes where what you need is total freedom of movement?

Because, obviously yoga pants give total freedom of movement plus you don't moon the person behind you.

Just had a quick look at m and s size guide for school uniform.

Girls age 15 -16
Height 65 and a half - 66 inches
Waist 28 - 29
Hips 37 and 3 quarters - 39 and a half

Boys 15 -16
Height 67 - 69 and a quarter
Waist 28 and a half - 34 inches depending on fit.

So quite big differences in sizes based on sex.

DecomposingComposers · 09/09/2019 17:31

The poster who said skirts give more freedom of movement than trousers or shorts didn't say school trousers or gym wear. It was a stand alone statement - no qualifications.

Either what she said was correct or not.

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/09/2019 17:36

Rufus Grin I cropped this one very tidily!

ErrolTheDragon · 09/09/2019 17:46

Errol you might want to take issue with fraggling then who said...

Not in the least. Short skirts do give total freedom of movement. Trousers and shorts generally don't. IIRC the context of these garments was classroom wear, so 'proper' trousers, not leggings etc.

DecomposingComposers · 09/09/2019 17:50

Honestly, even when you are confronted by the truth you still do somersaults to try and argue black is white. The post was quite clear - skirts give more freedom of movement than trousers or shorts. No qualifications, no "only referring to a line skirts and school trousers".

Clearly many types of trouser give more freedom of movement than skirts. And pencil skirts give way less freedom of movement than practically all trousers.

Just ridiculous.
