Special trans taxi services to keep them safe

Hey BBC, where's our front-page promoted article and video interview about all the things women have done for and by each other, for centuries, to stay safe in public? No?

The "look at poor ickle us suffering from these things nobody has ever had to worry about before" is so infuriating. We have been living this shit forever.

earlywalker The OP is not saying that trans people shouldn't have a taxi service. The OP is saying that there is little need for it because trans people are seldom attacked. The OP also highlights the startling contrast between NYC's supportive attitude towards a trans taxi service and Glasgow's ban on a women's taxi service, despite the clear need for a women's taxi service because women are sexually-assaulted by male taxi drivers so often.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:25

We can have both. It shouldn't be necessary, but anyone who feels unsafe should be able to call someone they are can trust to drive them to their destination.

And I do completely understand why trans people feel unsafe.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2019 20:27

We can have both

The women of Glasgow can't.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:34

Well that really depends on their perception of safety. Plus, I would imagine anyone who is so frightened of male taxi drivers that they won't get in a car with them has probably arranged their life so that it doesn't include any taxi journeys.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:35

Not that I'm saying transwomen are men, to make that clear in advance.

littlbrowndog · 05/09/2019 20:36

Haha 💪🔥

bd67th · 05/09/2019 20:36

So call and ask for a female driver. But yes, indeed, you are not legally entitled to one. And really, I don't think you should be.

Tell that to John Worboy's victims. The misogyny in that statement is breathtaking.

Where does it stop?

Ultimately, when men stop raping. As an immediate transitional demand whilst men stop raping, any situation where I am confined with another person in a space from which I cannot escape, such as a car or prison cell, I should have the right to insist that the other person be female.

That you think it's OK for trans people to have a trans-only taxi service in case the driver disagrees with gender ideology, but not OK for women to have a women-only taxi service in case the driver rapes and murders and dismembers us, is appalling. You either have painful levels of cognitive dissonance or are a massive misogynist. Which is it?

littlbrowndog · 05/09/2019 20:39

I think the last one tbh bd

bd67th · 05/09/2019 20:44

Not always possible. There are disabled women who can't use buses. If the last train home is cancelled, I have to get a taxi or walk for miles.

Would you, as in Karka, ever say: "I would imagine anyone who is so frightened of transphobic taxi drivers that they won't get in a car with them has probably arranged their life so that it doesn't include any taxi journeys"? If not, why is it OK to say that about women who fear male drivers?

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:50

No, I don't think you should be legally entitled to demand a woman taxi driver is available to you whenever you want one. I think it's legally challenging as an idea, I think it's logistically almost impossible, and I would also have significant concerns about the financial impact that would have on the cost of journeys overall.

There are innumerable ways you will be in a small space with a man in your life. What about a lift? Are we going to make it illegal for a man and a woman who don't know each other to be in a lift together?

littlbrowndog · 05/09/2019 20:55

That’s an awesome idea kark

Let’s do it. If we pull together we can do that

PurpleCrowbar · 05/09/2019 21:00

I live somewhere where the vast, vast majority of taxi/Uber drivers are men.

& I've had no issues in 4 years BUT I know several women who've had unpleasant experiences.

So if a 'women drivers' initiative started, I would download the app &use it in preference to Uber.

& if no female drivers were available, I'd Uber, but I'd prioritise women driving women, every time.

If a 'trans - not for you' app were to be started, I'd wish the start-uppers & their potential client base well.

Honestly- crack on. I can't see any reason anyone could object.

It's a fight being sought with your own shadow.

Dangerfloof · 05/09/2019 21:00

And yet a trans taxi driver is ok, in fact go one further and make a whole company of trans taxi drivers?

But women, know your place (its barefoot, pregnant, in front of the kitchen sink) dont be so bold and silly as to require same sex taxi drivers

Earlywalker · 05/09/2019 21:00

The OP is saying that there is little need for it because trans people are seldom attacked.

Yes. But Why not focus on getting what we do need/want rather than criticising what others need/want. My friend used to drive for a female taxi company, there’s quite a few in London (or was at the time!)

Councils refusing female only cab companies is a disgrace in itself. There’s no need to criticise other services and play the oppression Olympics to recognise that though.

Authorities and companies recognising vulnerabilities and taking action to make people feel safe can only ever be a good thing.

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 21:01

Natch Smile

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:01

I don't know where they're going in a taxi if they have work to be doing in the kitchen!

littlbrowndog · 05/09/2019 21:03

Stop it me and kark have got a lift campaign to work on

Taxis are so last 5 minutes ffs

littlbrowndog · 05/09/2019 21:06

And yeah fuck you glasgow. You fought to stop women getting equal pay for years

Glasgow gives no fucks about women or their safety

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:06

Can you put your username on your forehead so I can not get in a lift with you?

PurpleCrowbar · 05/09/2019 21:09

But I do also think that Kark's latest post is unintentionally hilarious.

I don't expect to be legally entitled to any sort of taxi, what with taxi drivers being self employed.

If I insisted that every taxi driver ever was called Geoffrey or that I should be 'entitled' to a taxi in the Antarctic then good luck with that one, right?

But if I'm a taxi firm & I say that I will offer female drivers where that is requested then it gets a bit trickier.

It would be fair to say that a company specialising in providing trans identifying drivers to trans identifying clients would not have to worry about most feminists arguing the toss - not our circus, not our monkeys.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:13

I've got female taxi drivers offered in my area - I've just checked.

I'm not familiar with the law in Scotland, but it's definitely not illegal in the UK to advertise female drivers.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:14

Oops. England, not UK.

Datun · 05/09/2019 21:15

Do we need to have a female bus driver on standby in case someone doesn't want to be on the bus with a man driving? What about a train? Or a plane?

Yes, of course, vehicles which house dozens of passengers are exactly the same as a car which houses one.

Just ask John Worboys, or any number of Uber drivers. Or unlicensed cab drivers.

As long as nobody objects to female only cab companies, we're on the same page.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:17

What happens if everyone on the bus gets off except for you?

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 21:17

Or what if everyone on the bus is a man?
