Special trans taxi services to keep them safe

Hey BBC, where's our front-page promoted article and video interview about all the things women have done for and by each other, for centuries, to stay safe in public? No?

The "look at poor ickle us suffering from these things nobody has ever had to worry about before" is so infuriating. We have been living this shit forever.

I'm here for the same reason you are

passing the time in an online community I feel an affinity to?

Really?

HugsAreMyDrugs · 05/09/2019 19:45

You don't think women are ever assaulted by taxi drivers?

Okay then.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:47

I've been on Mumsnet for over ten years, so I'm pretty sure, yes n

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 19:48

Well we seem to have established that it's not actually because trans people are in danger that they want exclusionary taxi services, it's because people who disagree with them of either sex make them sad and they shouldn't have to be in a car with them.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:49

I don't think it's reasonable to complain that trans people are having a service to protect them when it is considered legally unnecessary to segregate drivers and passengers by sex, and also, when, if you want a female driver, you can just, you know, find one.

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 19:49

Except you've mentioned the "prejudice" on FWR several times now. You can hide it you know.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:50

No, I think they are in danger, unfortunately. It must be really awful for them worrying about how people will react to them all the time. Being a woman actually makes me feel sympathetic rather than catty.

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 19:51

Why is it considered reasonable to segregate by gender identity, if not sex?

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:51

Why should I hide it? I don't need to hide opinions that are different to mine. I'm an adult.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:52

We also get this all the time - pushing women out of FWR, or trying to. You really need to examine how much of a feminist you are when you are trying to exclude women from an important resource because they happen to not agree with you on one point.

HugsAreMyDrugs · 05/09/2019 19:54

Why is it necessary to segregate people based on gender identity but unnecessary to do so based on sex?

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 19:55

Being a woman makes me think my rights as a woman and those of other women and girls who make up half the population and are structurally disadvantaged, are more important than our male centric society would have it.

And that is my priority, rather than the sadness of males with different gender identities. We all have our problems. But you do you.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 19:58

It's not necessary at all when it comes to taxis to make legal segregations for any aspect of your sex or gender identity. It's a preference.

Mamello · 05/09/2019 19:58

Kark But that's the point. Depending on where you live you cant always find one because your council may have refused them a licence on the basis its sexist. And apparently the BBC can report on the trans taxi service as a good thing (which it is) but doesn't bother to report on the denial of licences to a women only service because???

Pota2 · 05/09/2019 19:59

Karka what is the justification for ANY segregation based on identity?

Mamello · 05/09/2019 20:00

Sorry responding to Jarks post of 19.49

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 20:00

It's not necessary at all when it comes to taxis to make legal segregations for any aspect of your sex or gender identity. It's a preference.

Yes, and for sound evidence based reasons of safety and greater protection from harassment, many women would prefer a female only taxi where female = those of the sex which produces ova.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:01

So call and ask for a female driver.

But yes, indeed, you are not legally entitled to one. And really, I don't think you should be. Where does it stop? Do we need to have a female bus driver on standby in case someone doesn't want to be on the bus with a man driving? What about a train? Or a plane? It's logistically unsound to have legislation in this regard.

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 20:04

No one has said you are legally entitled to one. Just like with trans taxis, it's a preference. One that should be legally allowed and not challenged as discriminatory.

I'm going to count your strawpeople of uncertain gender now.

x1

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:05

I'm going to commence ignoring your counting.... Now.

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 20:07

Grin you're quite entertaining

bd67th · 05/09/2019 20:07

Refusing to get in a car with someone who has changed gender is shitty.

Quite happy to get in a car with a transman. Transmen are born female.

Karkasaurus · 05/09/2019 20:07

I was thinking the same actually Grin

Ereshkigal · 05/09/2019 20:08

Excellent Smile

Dangerfloof · 05/09/2019 20:17

So call and ask for a female driver
Isn't this exactly what most of us have said? We want female drivers but there aren't that many. I have just looked at my local taxi companies. They all have accessible taxis, they even have a couple pet taxis and one has a child car seat. But not one has the option for only women or only trans drivers.
So just calling and asking will get me nowhere. And say I chose to set up my own female only taxi service, I would be disallowed by the council who looks very dimly on such fancy ideas. I know because a bit more googling tells me they have denied two other people with the same idea. Possibly i should try it with trans as the driving force. Wonder if that would get through and make me a local paper star?
