TRA publicly gloats about terminally ill young woman’s diagnosis and impending death

As everyone who read this will know, Magdalen Berns is terminally ill with glioblastoma and has moved to palliative care, which is the last stage of cancer. It is an absolute tragedy that a young person is in this position, and someone so brilliant and brave and committed, with so much to offer. Hideous.

I was utterly horrified to see on Twitter that Rachel Mckinnn has been publicly gloating about this fact, encouraging followers to ‘celebrate’ that Magdalen is ‘dying of brain cancer’.

This is evil, isn’t it? It’s the unvarnished face of hatred, spewing its pus out into the world.

There’s an open letter about this on Medium, but I want to do more. Does anyone have any ideas of how this could be publicised?

McKinnon in the past has also wished that we (the people who disagree with the TRA agenda) would ‘die in a grease fire’. This is a misogynist daydreaming about, and celebrating, women dying in horrible pain.

Am I right in thinking McKinnon may be coming to the UK at some point in the future? Doing what? Are there organisations involved with that visit, who can be asked publicly why they’re supporting this active, obscene, death fantasising hatred of women? Academic institutions? Cycling publications?

Is there scope for advocating for McKinnon to be barred from entering the UK, on the same grounds as are those who promote some forms of radical Islam? I know it wouldn’t succeed, but it could attract attention!

Sorry if this is covered elsewhere.

Oh forgot I am not allowed to correctly sex on here. Just in case anyone can be bothered to report me, here's the politically acceptable version:

That's actually a shame. RM talking to a more or less empty room would have had entertainment value. Now RM will be able to be all matyrish "the evil terfs shut me down".

SunsetBeetch · 31/08/2019 10:54

How did the evil terfs manage to stop all of McKinnon's fans from buying tickets? Hmm

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/08/2019 10:56

That’s what happens when you block everyone on twitter who isn’t fawning over you. You start to believe your own hype.

They should be made to present - everyone should see this!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 31/08/2019 11:16

How did the evil terfs manage to stop all of McKinnon's fans from buying tickets?

Lord only knows, but as soon as RM wakes up, I'm sure we'll be told exactly how.

The truth fairy story is out there.

GirlDownUnder · 31/08/2019 11:28

Oh what a shame.

Ratio’d in real life.

That’s gotta sting.

SunsetBeetch · 31/08/2019 11:30

Tee hee...

“I wonder who on earth vandalised Rachel McKinnon's Wikipedia page? Whoever done it I'd like to buy them a pint.”

MissLawls · 31/08/2019 11:52

I didn't think McKinnon would come. I've seen Americans and Canadians praise our feminists here in the UK because we take a lot less bull than they do. Very flattering. No idea if it's true. Anyway I thought McKinnon would cancel out of fritness but seems RM can't sell tickets to its show. And that's a damn shame.

RoyalCorgi · 31/08/2019 11:57

That Wiki entry is gold.

Not in the least bit surprised that McK's talk has been cancelled - I said when it was announced that no one would buy tickets at that price. £25 is way too high even for a speaker you'd want to see.

RoyalCorgi · 31/08/2019 11:58

"He wouldn't recognise an ethic if one sat on his face and sang Hello Dolly." Grin

testing987654321 · 31/08/2019 11:59

Yeah, I didn't want to pay £25 to see Ian McKellan, and I know him to be an interesting speaker.

GirlDownUnder · 31/08/2019 12:04

Hx wouldn't recognise an ethic if one sat on hxx face and sang Hello Dolly.

I liked that one so much I actually lol’d. (OK it was more of an involuntary snort, but lol’d sounds better Blush)

ThePurported · 31/08/2019 12:09

What a shame. How about another McK takeover on 5 Live instead? I'm sure the BBC will oblige.

Absolutely. I have been rewatching all her videos, what an amazing legacy to leave.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 31/08/2019 12:22

I hope she's comfortable - and that she's sufficiently comfortable and alert to know that McK's talk has bombed.

Imagine dying on a bit of "fuck off, wanker" news. Almost comforting, I'll bet.

Ereshkigal · 31/08/2019 12:23

Absolutely. I have been rewatching all her videos, what an amazing legacy to leave.

Same here.

"He wouldn't recognise an ethic if one sat on his face and sang Hello Dolly."

My very favourite bit.

StrangeLookingParasite · 31/08/2019 13:59

And goodbye you lovely woman, Magdalen. You made such a huge différence.

I'm rewatching all her videos too. So much sense, so badly needed.

Eli38 · 01/09/2019 19:20

Nothing worse than we heard from just about the entire Left about Maggie Thatcher. Before and after she died.

ScreamingBeans · 02/09/2019 11:53

There's some truth in that Eli and that's down to the tribal hatred of Thatcher that was accepted throughout the left. That hatred was partly due to plain old misogyny (none of the male tory PM's since Winston Churchill were hated so viscerally as Thatcher) and partly due to the fact that Thatcher wasn't just a common or garden Tory PM, she was a PM who re-introduced the cruelty of neo-liberalism back into Britain, when we'd thought we'd got rid of the threat of hunger and sickness by the innovation of the welfare state and the NHS.

She was exceptional in that sense, those of us on the left who saw her dismantling the post war consensus, knew that it was a pre-cursor to what is now accepted as normal but which once would have been considered a national disgrace: homelessness, foodbanks, mothers going hungry to feed their kids, whole communities with no quality work etc.

Also, Thatcher was in her 90s. She'd had a life, she'd done the things she wanted to do in her life and we all have to die. I think most people agree that if you have any more than your three score years and ten, you can't complain about death, sad as it is. There's a difference between the way normal people receive the death of a young person vs an old person.

But then, most normal people don't actively celebrate the death of anyone, young or old. Celebrating the death of someone because you disagree with their political views and define those views as harmful to you when that person hasn't held political power and had the opportunity to introduce policies that actively harm you, is somewhat different than celebrating the death of someone who has actually harmed you, IMO. Not that I'm defending the celebrations of Thatcher's death, I thought they were distasteful and unpleasant, but it's a false equivalence to equate them to the celebrations of violent transactivists on the interweb.

Magdalen has never harmed anyone. What she has done is challenged and argued and invited transactivists to argue against her. They have always refused because they don't have any arguments, just bigotry and hatred which they then project on to her and all feminists who disagree with them. The pretence by transactivists that all their problems are down to uppity women, is a political stance they have taken because destroying a feminist analysis and approach to transactivism is crucial in ensuring that there is no coherent opposition to their political goals and because violent threats and hatred of women are more politically and socially acceptable than if they tried these tactics against men with actual power.

And of course, they're all batshit.

Alwaysgrey · 02/09/2019 12:08

That Wikki page is so so correct. Anything it seems RM disagrees with he starts shouting about terfs, transphobia and other garbage.

2BthatUnnoticed · 02/09/2019 12:19

The animosity from TRAs towards Magdalen is very telling. She is not a politician. She has never been in a position of power.

She simply does not share their beliefs on gender. And for that alone, they think celebrating her impending death is justified.

I have not had the privilege of meeting Magdalen, but I learned so much from her common sense and courage, and am in awe of her.
