Has any woman here ever been mistaken for a bloke?

I've always been bigger than most other girls / women.

Despite an officially (Gok Wan hah!!) hourglass shape (waist 75% of equal sized hip/shoulders) etc etc etc, no gender confusion and what not, my overall bigliness (I'm the height of the average British bloke so half of them are smaller than me) has always been a potential for problems.

Oversized feet, big jaw, broad shoulders send ... the wrong message.

Never been particularly GNC, just not 'slim, dainty, girly, feminine, flirtatious, hot' and all the rest of that template stuff women are 'supposed to be'.

Each time I've been mis-sexed I remember with a jolt. Where I was, who said what, how I reacted - and what I was wearing. I actually think twice about what I wear in case it triggers an incident. Certain things I shy away from - Lace up shoes, trousers with jackets especially.

It's really rare to be fair, but over a lifetime that's a little collection I'd rather not have in the memory bank.

Does anyone else share this little anxiety?

When I was a teenager I used to wear jeans and a cap all the time and some girls thought I was a boy. Strangely enough I now wear mainly skirts or dresses unless it is cold out.

My cousin sometimes gets mistaken for a man, a woman recently had a go at her (and was quite aggressive) in a wetherspoons toilet as she thought my cousin was a man. Despite my cousin telling her in a very feminine voice that shes a woman.

@SimonJT

I sometimes have to look carefully at people to make sure I am addressing them accordingly. There is a transexual working in my local hairdressers and I sometimes make the mistake of calling her him by mistake which goes down like a house on fire.

Yeah. It didn’t bother me at all, I actually quite liked being called ‘Sir’. It felt respectful.

I also had a very awkward time as a teenager when we went to order the flowers for my dads funeral. I had a short hair cut and the man taking the order decided to give all the women/girls a flower and my brother chocolate when it came to me he very obviously looked confused and stared at both things in his hands. My mum then said "shes a girl" which I was annoyed about as I would rather chocolate than a bloody flower.

Never, but I think it's more to do with hair and clothes than a person's figure or face. Always had long ish hair and like to wear a mix of masculine and feminine clothes eg if I wore a men's coat I'd probably wear skinny jeans and more feminine shoes.

I don't dress feminine, so a few times mistaken for a butch lesbian. Which I take as a compliment

Yup. Totally. Why wouldn’t anyone? Butches are hot! Smile

I am very pear-shaped, short and female-looking facially. Since puberty not been mistaken for a boy or man even the times when I had short hair and was wearing ‘man’s’ clothing (as in clothes made for men sold in a mens’ clothes shop). Mens’ clothes (trousers especially) don’t sit as the eye ‘expects’ on me, so noones’s ever mistaken me for not being AHF, even at a glance.

When I was a child/early teens I was mistaken quite a lot but I was a tomboy so rather liked it until I got into my teens.

Also was mistakenly registered as male in my mum's country when born (genuine clerical error, not "assigned at birth" bullshit) which did cause real issues when I turned 18 but was fairly easy to fix.

I am tall, largish build and broad shouldered, but have very visible curves (boobs, hips and small waist) and long hair. I’m a teacher and get called sir every week.
It doesn’t hurt me but I am a bit bewildered Hmm.

I have but only once - short hair, converse trainers, jeans, leather jacket back in the 80s. I dropped something (it was in the US) and walked away from it. "sir, sir, you dropped this". All smiles when it was realised that I wasn't a sir. They were a bit embarrassed but I didn't mind.

I had a moped when I was 16 and in my padded jacket with back supports nearly every one assumed I was a teenage boy. I found it thrilling (in a sort of George from the Famous Five kind of a way). But it doesn't happen to me in any other context.

I'm tall and when I had short hair I was mistaken for a bloke a few times. It hasn't happened with longer hair.

RocketRacoonsFurryBalls my brother and I got mistaken for each other too! And it was because of grunge. We both had long hair, both wore check shirts and skanky jeans.
Although I think the one time my friend ran up to my brother, hugged him and then said 'Oh I thought you were your sister' she did it on purpose because she fancied him.

Never bothered me to be mistaken for a bloke. My husband sometimes gets mistaken for a woman because he has longish hair - again, we just laugh about it.
