Lawsuits against The Guardian to follow, no doubt.

The article is quite funny in its po-faced declarations of transphobia (and no evidence whatsoever to back them up).

That's what happens when you indulge, indulge, indulge.

They turn on you. They always turn on you.

Look at A Challenor and the Green Party, after everything the Greens did for the Challenors. Challenor quit, citing transphobia.

This is the bit I was commenting on in my unpublishable Guardian comment.

Even after struggling with gender dysphoria – a sense of discomfort with and dissociation from the body that life dealt me, and the expectations that go with it – for almost my whole life...

Many people struggle with discomfort with their bodies - women are always being given impossible ideals to live up to - we're too fat, too ugly, the 'wrong' shape. Some of us go for drastic dieting, cosmetic surgery - some of us just learn to live with the hand we were dealt. Disabled people must sometimes think they were 'born in the wrong body', but have to learn to live with the one they have. Is Nicky's 'discomfort' any different from that?

And as for the 'expectations'. If there are expectations which are put on you because you are a man or because you are a woman, why not fight to change a society that expects that? Why assume that it's you that is 'wrong'? Is this a special sort of self-hatred, or what? But I suppose my view is influenced by growing up in the 70s, when feminists were fighting for the rights of women, not insisting they were actually men because they wanted to have rights.

NotAtMyAge I suspect the moderators don't even read my comments any more, just delete them. I had a few published when I first signed up, but recent ones have just disappeared.

but my love of storytelling remains

Lol!

Haworthia · 16/08/2019 16:42

I’ve just watched a little bit of Nicky’s coming out video on Twitter. Now I’m sure Nicky is a perfectly nice person, no denying that, but even before I turned the volume up I could just tell that Nicky was “performing”. Nicky’s facial expressions/mannerisms seemed (to me at least - and I guess I’m biased) forced and rehearsed.

As a woman it makes me feel uncomfortable.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 16/08/2019 16:45

All comments committing wrongthink on the 'Stop Funding Hate' page have now been purged. Thank you for your attention. There is no debate.

Lumene · 16/08/2019 16:59

Stop Funding Hate have unfortunately disappeared right up their own arse.

Organisations like the BBC, the Greens, the Lib Dems, the Labour Party, The Guardian - they are the ones who are having all the hassle. Since they are the ones who kowtow to the ideology. And whatever they do, it will never be good enough. We are seeing this now. A factual article about the safety of children who identify as transgender is smeared as transphobic. By your own staff. Who are very clearly working against you.

Meanwhile, other organisations (like the Daily Mail, say) have no hassle whatsoever. Because they never kowtowed to the ideology in the first place. They can write what they want and do what they want.

There's a lesson there, if only someone has the awareness to see it.

So much this @Popchyk

nonsenceagain · 16/08/2019 18:59

I'm really glad to hear about this. The Guardian deserves all its gets though I'm sorry that this has happened under a female editor. TRA stuff aside, it's got worse and worse over the last few years - in every department. As everyone else has said, too much opinion and so little journalism. The only real exceptions are Carole Cadwalladr (though mainly in the Observer) and Amelia Gentleman.

testing987654321 · 16/08/2019 19:01

I wonder how many female sports writers the guardian has?

In fact, I wonder what % of its journalists are female? Is it around 50%?
I wonder how many transgender journalists it has? Is it around 1%?

I feel I should know what % of the population is transgender.

Naomi Wolf sigh

Important summary of UK debate putting feminists against trans people - one I can’t fathom. t.co/9YB4T6Xw0m

I’m impressed with the ⁦*@guardian*⁩ US’s op ed here challenging transphobia in the UK. Especially impressed by this transparency. t.co/2bKiGjjFYy

Other US journalists are concerned about what seems at times like UK left’s transphobic views. I objected to what I saw in UK media in general as transphobic views at @edbookfest. Many in audience were supportive. Trans phobia is not feminism in my view. t.co/TsNCHkThln

Your sigh is far more polite than my immediate reaction, Sunset.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 16/08/2019 22:36

I find this hilarious and surreal. I had no idea about anything to do with trans ideology until very recently because I only ever got my news from the BBC and the Guardian who reported absolutely nothing with regards to the ideology apart from promoting drag queens and another pro LGBT/trans stuff. The Guardian couldn't have been more biased if the tried!

I'm assuming they are 'citing transphobia' because the Guardian dared to mention a couple of issues about the ideology in some recent articles, I think one was about males who identified as women playing in female sports. They accept nothing but complete unwavering devotion to the ideology and anyone who disagrees is always wrong according to them.

NotAtMyAge · 16/08/2019 23:45

Naomi Wolf's tweets are not going the way she would wish. Virtually no likes or retweets and the ration in the comments has to be seen to be believed.

2Rebecca · 17/08/2019 00:00

I'm surprised Naomi Wolf has that much time on her hands. She does a lot of retweeting. Does she say anywhere what she objected to? Ed book festival is pretty woke. They were wary of us in our adult human female tshirts last year so I don't see it transforming in to GC central but pleased if it has

JanesKettle · 17/08/2019 00:05

I would think Ms Wolf was too busy taking a course in 'how to get the basic thesis of your book right before publishing' to castigate British women. Apparently not.

Candidpeel · 17/08/2019 01:01

Naomi Wolf can't fathom it??? Hmm

AlwaysComingHome · 17/08/2019 01:23

Wolf can’t tell the living from the dead so I’m not surprised she can’t tell men from women.

She had her arse handed to her over her latest book.

GirlDownUnder · 17/08/2019 03:18

Late to this thread, but can I just add

Noticing that trans rights sometimes "collide" with women's rights equals denying my humanity

Science has the Hadron Collider, TRAs have the Hyperbole Collider

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2019 08:59

Dr Naomi Wolf @naomirwolf
I’ll certainly read more as always. I just don’t see trans women as this kind of threat and existentially don’t think anyone has the right to tell anyone else what gender they should be. In my read of politics this kind of furor is almost always a distraction from something else.

She doesn't know a lot about politics.

nettie434 · 17/08/2019 09:31

I thought The Beauty Myth was excellent but was (sadly) not too surprised at her tweet.

I was struck by one of the replies in particular. It reported that for the first time in years the proportion of young American women describing themselves as uncomfortable with LGBT people had risen to over 60% from around 50%. The tweeter questioned whether the policies of trans women in college sports and non segregated lavatories had contributed to the rise. I was amazed by that statistic. It was already high. Just made me wonder if organisations making wholesale changes without consultation (like Leeds Council) are actually creating a backlash. Anyway, if Naomi reads that reply perhaps she will begin to question that ‘Bleurgh, British feminists are so transphobic’ myth that Guardian USA etc like so much.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 17/08/2019 10:16

Ach, I'd really like to read this article but I'm not subscribing to The National: www.thenational.scot/news/17840656.feel-betrayed-woman-behind-myth/

RedToothBrush · 17/08/2019 10:20

As a side note, I am slowly but surely peaking my ultra woke friend who works for the BBC.

It's interesting to watch the penny dropping and her becoming aware of things she was totally oblivious to.

On this and other subjects.

RoyalCorgi · 17/08/2019 10:23

Is Naomi Wolf stupid or something? I know she completely ballsed up with her last book by completely misinterpreting the Old Bailey records (something which a competent historian could have put her right on). So she's certainly careless. It's kind of astonishing that she can't even grasp why so many feminists have concerns about trans activism. It's not intellectually difficult, after all.

nettie434 · 17/08/2019 10:34

I’d like to read it too scrimshaw but don’t want to sign up and have to pay. I took a look at Shona Craven’s twitter though. (She’s the journalist who wrote the article for anyone who doesn’t want to click Scrimshaw’s link).

twitter.com/shonacraven/status/1161563991505854464?s=21

Now Shona’s tweets are definitely worth a read. They seem to give a good flavour of the article.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 17/08/2019 11:41

existentially don’t think anyone has the right to tell anyone else what gender they should be

No, I'm triggered Ms Wolf

No one is saying what GENDER people should be, we are pointing out what SEX they actually are!

And actually the right to sex based protections is part of law.
