Hello FWRs

Has anyone signed up to spinster.xyz yet? It’s like twitter but without the misogyny. No banning for stating biological truths. See you over there hopefully

Agree that if people are happy posting on Twitter it's no different to that. You can limit your audience when you post. I'm happy with it so far but if people aren't they can ignore it

Bespin · 14/08/2019 22:03

it's no diffent to kewi farmers and plenty of people on here use that site. The whole structure is being taken advantage of by right wing and neo nazi groups due to its minimal boundaries.

What rubbish!

You have no understanding of the structure of Open Source networking obviously!

Any user of such a network can block whole aspects of such a network and, if not that, can block any individual user of such a network.

DejaVulva

Totally agree, but I have been reading how this pertucular network at this time is being used and exploited by such groups its all over the Internet in relation to this. I really hope they tighten up there structure and define some definitions of what they will allow this tech to be used for.

LangCleg · 14/08/2019 23:23

Scary, all those women talking to each other without being under coercive control by males, isn't it? Terrifying.

LangCleg · 14/08/2019 23:24

DON'T GO THERE WOMEN!

NEVER GO THERE.

WHERE YOU CAN TALK TO EACH OTHER.

NOPE.

DON'T DO IT.

JoyceJeffries · 14/08/2019 23:28

😂

littlbrowndog · 14/08/2019 23:29

I WONT LANG

OccasionalKite · 14/08/2019 23:38

Well, I signed on there yesterday.

And then, this afternoon, influenced by what I had read there, I went right out and had a buzzcut and a swastika tattooed on my forehead1!1!

(No, not really. I think some posters may be exaggerating just a teensy bit!)

haXXor · 15/08/2019 01:11

Ah, Bespin, I can tell you're not familiar with FLOSS. Mastodon and its derivatives are free-as-in-freedom software that anyone can run their own instance of themselves. The authors have no ability at all to control what other people use it for.

Seeing as you are so keen to stop people from.using server technologies in ways you don't like, perhaps you can head to the latest Ozimek/Fae thread and come up with ideas about how the authors of Tomcat, Apache, and Nginx can prevent their software from being used to host child abuse images, rape footage, etc in the name of men getting their jollies?

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 15/08/2019 01:37

Lol at people trying to stop women from signing up to Spinster to discuss women's rights. Now where have we seen that type of behaviour before?

DeRigueurMortis · 15/08/2019 01:50

Well tbh I'm enjoying it over there.

As ever, a degree of caution is always worth while and I generally subscribe to the view that if you wouldn't say something in RL then don't say it online (and if confidentially is important to you then use a burner email to register).

I think people are getting confused about the way the Open Source software is being used and DejaVulva has done a good job of explaining it.

It's early days for the site, and who knows how it will pan out, but if we don't try and carve a safe space out online for ourselves who will?

There's a good reason people want to scare women from registering - they don't want this to be successful, they don't want a place for women to talk freely and organise.

MN has been great but is also under pressure and we have rules that can be difficult at times to swallow.

I'm not leaving MN or FWR but I do like the concept of having another place that's less restricted by the requirements to appease advertisers at the expense of not being allowed to state biological truth.

IdaBWells · 15/08/2019 05:44

How is PeachYogurt’s forum going? What’s the name again?

Datun · 15/08/2019 06:35

Lol at people trying to stop women from signing up to Spinster to discuss women's rights.

For some people, the desire to stop women talking to each other unsupervised, is so overwhelming, they will say and do things which undermine their credibility to such an extent that everything they say thereafter is automatically ignored.

And still they do it. They can't help themselves. The living example of the law of diminishing returns.

AnyOldPrion · 15/08/2019 07:11

How is PeachYogurt’s forum going?

She closed it down, I believe.

It’s difficult to know if this will take off or not. I believe various big hitters who are banned from Twitter have joined. I think success will depend on whether it develops a function. Mumsnet definitely still functions as a place where new people happen upon these discussions, as a site where some activism is born (think ManFriday) and as somewhere to come for news and information on current affairs that is easy to find.

Twitter has a function as a public battleground, and somewhere with a degree of a access to influential people.

A site focused on gender critical feminism will need to create its own function if it’s to thrive. I believe some big-hitters have signed up. If they use it, it could become a place for information and activism. But I think there’s a lot of luck involved.

AnyOldPrion · 15/08/2019 07:12

Also, it will be very difficult to moderate because the more successful it is, the more it will be trolled.

OohthatlovelyNigelfromBabyClub · 15/08/2019 09:48

I can't get on the website to even register. Angry I'm not angry, just disappointed.

LangCleg · 15/08/2019 09:55

How about it Bespin?

Bespin? Bespin? Besp....

... oh, you've gone.

TheInebriati · 15/08/2019 12:41

This is a pattern of behaviour you'll find among abusive and violent men. They find something useful, and they'll use it to promote their own agenda. In doing so they often spoil it for genuine users, even people who depend on the resource.

The problem is abusive and violent men, not whatever tool they are currently misusing.

Bespin · 15/08/2019 12:53

sorry I went to work, you know some of us do that don't you.?

I'm not stopping anyone use it by all means, use kewi farms too just be aware who else might use them too. these are not closed communities not everyone can be vouched for can they.

TheInebriati · 15/08/2019 13:22

Making providers responsible for content has been a bone of contention since trolls and interest groups started to misuse the internet.

Bespin · 15/08/2019 13:30

Totally this ^^

TheInebriati · 15/08/2019 13:51

But it's literally what you were suggesting should happen upthread, which is why I posted the comment.

Most forums have moderation, spinster included.
The current problem faced by women is that we are being banned/deleted for speaking the facts we have been conditioned to believe for our whole lives. Facts that are borne out by our direct, lived experience.

We are not being told we must abandon those facts overnight, ignore how we feel, pretend our lived experience is harmful to others, leave our families, our religions, and our communities, and join a new group.

We must adopt beliefs that cannot be accurately described or named,. that no one can agree on.
Because the new order demands this. To many of us this is a case of here comes the new boss, just like the old boss.

GirlDownUnder · 15/08/2019 14:30

Well I rather like the fact that Spinster won’t give our Twitter monitors the ability to report posters, a la MN, and get posts deleted - I’d say that was a positive wouldn’t you bespin
