Hello FWRs

Has anyone signed up to spinster.xyz yet? It’s like twitter but without the misogyny. No banning for stating biological truths. See you over there hopefully

Spinster uses the same code as Gab, which is open-source. It isn't a subset of Gab or subforum of some sort of alt right nightmare. It’s hosted through a 3rd party provider by the owners. They are independent and set their own rules.

As long as the admins moderate (and ban where necessary) according to their rules, I can’t see the issue - unless you think one set of users using free code for evil permanently taints the code, in which case I have some homeopathic remedies to sell you.

Thank you! That makes me feel better. One of the admins has also kindly taken the time to explain it to me. I'm staying on there!

Very well said @TirisfalPumpkin

There are some who are sowing seeds of doubt [quelle surprise!] in all sorts of places .. usually those who have no understanding of how the server technology functions or who have ulterior motives for trying to deter women from gathering and talking in any environment that is not controlled by any man.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 14/08/2019 17:46

I hope the founders have taken a long hard look at the trouble MN had with she who must not be named and libel. This new site has doxxing and legal challenges written all over it. I hope they’ve lawyered up and have rock solid IT.

Personally I don’t see the point. Just start a thread on kiwi farms. You can say what you like there and it’s a proven site.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 18:05

The entire point is to create a social media space that is not an environment controlled by any man.

The entire point is to ensure that women are not abused for expressing their opinions and sharing facts.

LangCleg · 14/08/2019 18:48

Look, if you just want to talk to other women about whatever the fuck you like, without some bloke deciding you're not allowed to say whatever the fuck it was you wanted to say and all the site authorities agreeing with him and making you walk/talk on eggshells - join.

If you've got a particular result it must provide for you in mind other than that - don't join.

Simple as that.

mononokeswolf · 14/08/2019 18:55

I love it over there. So refreshing to see women say biological realities without fear of deletion/banning or the whatabouteries responses (and worse of course). It feels like a collective exhaling of breath as everyone gets it out of their system.

It is also extremely depressing that it seems so entirely maverick to be able to speak truths.

It also isn't a one-issue place, it feels very supportive right now and properly women-centred as it should be. It may change but I love the optimistic feel of it during this early phase.

I remember feeling optimistic about twitter once upon a time.

I am a different Ghibli character on there though my wolf features too Wink

Whatthingsexactly · 14/08/2019 18:57

This is from MK Fain, founder of Spinster, on the topic of spinster and gab:

“On Spinster, we already federate with 761 of these servers, including the biggest server – gab.com, which contains over a million users itself. This means that users on those servers will be able to see and interact with our conversations. ”

Don’t kid yourself that it’s just code that you will be sharing.

I can see the temptation, but there must come a point when the compromise is too, well, compromising.

PencilsInSpace · 14/08/2019 18:58

Having listened to the feminist current podcast I think I might join at some point over the next few days.

The number of attacks they have already fended off says they're probably doing something right. Lots of people seem really bothered by them HmmGrin

There are bound to be a few ructions and disputes in the early days, it's just part of forming any new community IME.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 19:00

I think what is important here is that women have a space to express opinions and share facts in a space not under the control of men.

If any unpleasant / abusive person wants to share that space they are easily reported and blocked.

PencilsInSpace · 14/08/2019 19:04

Whatthingsexactly I think they have this covered:

spinster.xyz/about

Whatthingsexactly · 14/08/2019 19:20

Yes, I’ve read that page. Did you notice this bit?

No threats of violence or glorification of violence
This includes pro-Nazi propaganda, white nationalist content, threats against women for disagreeing with you, and promotion of violence against non-human animals.

When the rules are specifically addressing pro nazi and white nationalism before even getting to the more usual stuff, that’s quite telling in what the expectation is for user of the gab fediverse.

And then there’s this:

If anyone goes to your user profile (unless they are logged in from a blocked account) they will be able to see all of your public posts.

I’m not telling anyone what to do or not do, but I don’t think it should be entered into lightly or unaware of what you’re signing in to.

There will be tracking codes watching users and retargeting with propaganda to nudge racist and antisemitic agendas, not to mention the misogyny. I wouldn’t go near gab on any device I didn’t want to be shown dog whistle nazi disinformation on, in sidebars, popups, ads etc.

The Gab fediverse comes with a warning that women are not welcome, and frequently subject to abuse and harassment.

The prize of a space where you’re allowed to use the words you want to describe trans people is not worth the cost of not only tolerating but actively participating in a platform that delights in its misogyny, racism and extremist views.

Just my view. As you can tell, I won’t be joining.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 19:30

@Whatthingsexactly

If a user stays within the "Home" or the "Spinster" environment the users of the wider Fediverse cannot see them.

If anyone goes to your user profile (unless they are logged in from a blocked account) they will be able to see all of your public posts.

That is no different from Twitter.

However, any user that avoids the Fediverse environment option cannot be seen by wider Fediverse users.

And don't forget the ability to report and block.

OvaHere · 14/08/2019 19:33

There are no ads, sidebars or pop ups and apart from a few trolls that were swiftly removed I haven't yet seen anyone who isn't from Spinster attempt to join a convo.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 19:38

The prize of a space where you’re allowed to use the words you want to describe trans people is not worth the cost of not only tolerating but actively participating in a platform that delights in its misogyny, racism and extremist views.

The space is one that is not under the control of men. And not a single one of us is "tolerating" or "actively participating in a platform that delights in its misogyny, racism and extremist views."

What a ridiculous thing to say.

All that has happened so far is that a tiny group of men have worked to try to disable the site because their insecurity is so deep that they cannot cope with the idea that there is a tiny space on the |Internet that they do not control.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 19:39

Well said, @OvaHere ... it is a lovely friendly space, so far.

Whatthingsexactly · 14/08/2019 19:48

By default, your posts will appear in... the Fediverse timeline of anyone who we Federate with... so unless users change settings their posts will appear on timelines of non spinster users.

Also, whilst platform itself has no ads, this does not in any way mean that users are not being tracked as to their activity on the platform, and their activity used to target ads and other content on other internet platforms and sites.

It’s fine if you feel none of this is an issue for you. Go well.

OvaHere · 14/08/2019 19:50

It's also worth pointing out that's it's not a site about trans ideology it's about feminism, woman and our lives. Yes gender stuff is being discussed but since joining a couple of days ago I've also had conversations about porn, SN, girl's education, portrayal of women in the media and probably other stuff I've forgotten.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 14/08/2019 19:53

I'm on Spinster and it seems good so far. A nice welcoming place where women can actually talk about issues affecting us.

I wouldn't sign up to Kiwi farms. I read somewhere 'reading Kiwi farms is fine to read but whatever you do don't write anything on there.' I think Kiwi farms, although good at exposing predators, will be full of trolls and hackers and they don't in general like radfems, they call us terfs or terves. Not somewhere I would recommend women hang out.

OvaHere · 14/08/2019 19:54

We get targeted ads here.

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 19:54

However, any user that avoids the Fediverse environment option cannot be seen by wider Fediverse users.

I wrote this back to front! Sorry!

Any user that avoids the Fediverse environment option cannot see any posts from wider Fediverse users.

jamrollyolly · 14/08/2019 20:03

Red toothbrush

My security settings wouldn't let me open your link. I've registered but not posted yet (bit of a lurker). Could you say briefly what your concern was? Thanks!

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 14/08/2019 20:13

In these blatantly women hating times it makes sense to exercise caution when joining on-line groups. Always best to sign up to social media accounts using burner e-mail addresses and a VPN even if you hope the group you are joining is well protected.

Protonmail.com and the tunnelbear browser extension in the Chrome browser are both free and easy to use. Also, it should go without saying that you use different passwords for all your different accounts and change them occasionally.

PencilsInSpace · 14/08/2019 20:22

I never see any ads Smile

DejaVulva · 14/08/2019 20:50

Also, whilst platform itself has no ads, this does not in any way mean that users are not being tracked as to their activity on the platform, and their activity used to target ads and other content on other internet platforms and sites.

We all know that using the Internet means we are all monitored and tracked. It's what the men who control the Internet have chosen to do. That is on those men whose insecurity is so deep they have a need to keep tabs on everyone else. We know this already. The Internet is controlled by very sick , coercively controlling men.

Spinster is a tiny space that is not directly controlled by such insecure and paranoid men. Spinster isn't going to go away regardless of how many men choose to monitor / track it and its users.

Neither is Mumsnet going to go away, regardless of how many sick, insecure and paranoid men would wish it be so.

We are all very aware of all the gaslighting in which such men engage. It no longer works.
