The way that Jenn was treated is appalling. I hope they sue the backside off Vancouver Pride.

That is just awful

OvaHere · 08/08/2019 19:35

That's terrible. Jenn is right, they are utterly totalitarian.

Etrusca · 08/08/2019 19:37

They wanted to catch him in a net?!

It reads like the plot from a Tintin strip.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 08/08/2019 19:40

What, they are now chasing dissenters with giant nets now?

Oh my gosh. Terrifying and insane.

I have many words to say but probably can't say what I really think here. A euphemism would be 'This movement is far from peaceful.'

Fraggling · 08/08/2019 19:42

Wow. Trying to catch them in a giant net wtf it's like something out of 60s acid driven tv! Avengers yes. The prisoner yes. 2019 pride march, um, no, weird as all fuck.

Hope jenn wins and wins big. Apology, cash, never do it again etc

Imnobody4 · 08/08/2019 19:44

This is the march where Trudeau supported the ban on UBC

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3660345-Trudeau-supports-Pride-Parades-decision-to-ban-UBC-library

It's just madness, mob rule. I hope Jenn wins.

Wishihad · 08/08/2019 19:45

That's disgusting

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 08/08/2019 19:47

I think it's super aggressive and extremely creepy. It's classic dehumanisation and shows anyone behind it is either a sociopath or brainwashed because no normal thinking person would think "I know, let's chase this person with a totally valid viewpoint who disagrees with me and try to catch them in a giant black net."

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 08/08/2019 19:47

The net thing is bonkers. Who the hell thinks they're entitled to try catch someone in public and wrap them up in a net because they don't like their sign?
The arrogance is jaw dropping.

Capitulate or feel the wrath of our net! Fucking bonkers!

RedDogsBeg · 08/08/2019 19:55

Chasing someone with a net for peacefully putting forward their point of view and this movement isn't at all totalitarian. It's reminiscent of the Child Catcher from Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang - awful.

RedDogsBeg · 08/08/2019 19:57

When are people going to wake up and see this hideous ideology for what it is?

KatvonHostileExtremist · 08/08/2019 20:05

A bit of me thinks even that lot couldn't be THAT insane.
Then I remember Yaviv

This is extraordinary and it will be interesting to see their explanation.

Jellybabiesarebabies · 08/08/2019 20:06

Are they fucking nuts? They can't go round catching people off the street using a net just because they don't agree with someone else's words. Attempted abduction. They need locking up for it.

Namechangeforagamechange · 08/08/2019 20:12

Spartacus I was expecting a big fishing net type thing too.

Doesn't make it any less harrowing. As Jenn quite rightly says, under whose authority are they chasing someone down a public street with a big fuck off net?

ScrimshawTheSecond · 08/08/2019 20:22

WTF?!

CharlieParley · 08/08/2019 20:32

Wait what?! Not a chance I'd have believed this story if I hadn't seen the photos. I've never seen security doing this, but maybe the net is a good way to snag disruptive intoxicated people without risk of injury to staff or revellers. But chasing an LGBT member about the Pride parade because they're quietly holding a sign criticising Pride? WTAF?

picklemepopcorn · 08/08/2019 21:15

Surely that's a hate crime? Hanging up on someone, chasing them with a net, causing them to run away for fear of being trapped- just because of who they are and what they think?

picklemepopcorn · 08/08/2019 21:15

Sorry, what they believe?

Datun · 08/08/2019 21:51

What the ever loving fuck???

What, exactly, were they hoping to do with Jenn if they actually got them in the net??

Bundle them into an unmarked car with tinted windows?

This is absolutely insane. I've never heard anything like it.

PreseaCombatir · 08/08/2019 22:11

What the actual fuck? Who do these people think they are? The fucking arrogance of it.
It’s terrifying that they are doing this in broad daylight.
The worst part for me is that there’s absolutely no fear of any repercussions for their mental behaviour, they feel so entitled to behave in this way.

JackyHolyoake · 08/08/2019 22:18

The Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, is responsible for facilitating such behaviour ... the cultural climate is that which is created by him, his politics and that of the political party he leads.

If Canadians have any sense at all they will vote him and his party into oblivion as soon as their next election allows.

Maybe Canada needs a Women's [female humans] party?

LizzieSiddal · 08/08/2019 22:24

Who do these people think they are!

WellThisIsShit · 08/08/2019 22:36

The terrifying zeal of these people who have such a tiny myopic viewpoint and such black & white cartoonish thinking, that we end up with this insane situation.

A peaceful person holding a sign in a public place is SOOOO threatening that they must be rounded up by a team holding a giant net, ready to bundle up the dissenter and... what? Disappear them? Silence them? F*cking kidnap and hurt them?

Where is their line? because it’s clearly way beyond where other decent people’s ethics kick in, or where the law should stop them.

Or maybe I’m hideously misjudging these ‘poor defensless victims’ (otherwise known as the healthy majority with a physical advantage, working as a group, using a dedicated implement, to hunt down and catch an older, lone, peaceful individual who hasn’t been aggressive in any way). Yup, that about covers it.

Perhaps they merely meant to illegally ‘detain’ the innocent law abiding person (sorry I mean terrifying dissenter) in hot conditions, panicked and dehydrated, by wrapping them in thick mesh, without training in restraints, holds or in the use of this mesh material over the body, head, face or airways.

Do they have any sense of how easy it is to kill someone being restrained in normal circumstances, let alone when you’ve got high temperatures, dehydration, an untrained group of vigilantes and this heavy black mesh wrapped around someone?!

(But it seems in this rising tide of insane group think, the idea of consequences for any of their behaviour seems to have left of the building, a long long time ago. I wish I could go back to believing this kind of thing is just a one of incident and unconnected to a whole, but I am waaaay past that, sadly! I’m still pro trans though, just not whatever this is, a subverted mission creep of the highest order).
