The way that Jenn was treated is appalling. I hope they sue the backside off Vancouver Pride.

Justin Trudeau needs to go. I speak to a lot of Canadians online and none of them want him in office. He's been an abject disaster for women and girls.

Crazy.

Just unbelievable.

BadgertheBodger · 09/08/2019 00:20

Well that’s a brand new level of crazy. Premeditated crazy as well, I’d say. I’m assuming they didn’t happen upon their giant, needs to be held by 4 people net by accident. Just fucking hell Shock I’m gobsmacked. I hope Jenn gets the apology and whatever else is appropriate here, like maybe the police agree that in future, if someone runs past them and is being chased by 4 people with a giant net, perhaps the police might want to get involved? Hmm

DanaPhoenix · 09/08/2019 01:59

Cartoonish is right. It's like every road runner v wil e coyote plot.
Insanity.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 09/08/2019 02:11

One of the issues with the policing of these events and marches has been that the police seem to have been told that anyone gender critical is 'bad' and that the TRAs are always good and righteous, so at these events the police seem to go there to protect the TRAs from GC people, even though GC people in attendance are always very small in number, usually women, usually middle aged and they don't have a history of threatening people online.

Instead the police should be non political and impartial, there to protect whoever needs protecting without any sort of bias.

Ornery · 09/08/2019 02:13

A fucking net? Parade stuff chasing someone down to catch them in a net because they don’t like the sign? I suppose it’s the same level of stupid that Oger displayed trying to get the woman arrested last year because Oger didn’t like her sign.
Madness.

miri1985 · 09/08/2019 03:54

I always wonder is it poor impulse control or a fundamental misunderstanding of consequences that makes people do these things. If they had left Jenn Smith standing there with that sign, very, very few would have noticed, probably at most it would have been posted on twitter.

They now have made it into what I imagine will be a major news story ('trans woman trapped in net' has DM written all over it) if/when Jenn Smith sues.

Trudeau is invariably going to be brought into it, he said "it's also really important to take a strong stance against intolerance" about Jenn Smith/UBC and then this happens, hes opened up a can of worms. Is a strong stance just refusing someone a venue or is it wrapping them up in a net when they're peacefully holding a sign.

SophoclesTheFox · 09/08/2019 06:30

My mind is boggled.

Congratulations, Pride Staff, you’ve passed your practical exams and are now fully qualified Eyes in the Republic of Gilead. There’s a lot of wrongthink out there, so you’re going to be busy little authoritarian bees.

JustbeaDentist · 09/08/2019 07:44

Surely that would have been assault.

TriptychDebbie · 09/08/2019 07:48

I honestly thought that nothing Canada did could possibly get any more insane than the Yaniv scandal, but here we are. The country's fucked.

Well. Nobody should be treated like this. I have a hard time caring about a racist though. This person was racist, to me and about POC in a Facebook exchange. Very aggressive person who I have no interest in supporting or giving a shit about.

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/08/2019 09:00

WHAT THE HELL!? They tried to catch Jenn in a net!? Deranged.

Jenn threatens their whole belief system. She transitioned very successfully and yet:

  • always uses male bathrooms and says she’s never felt unsafe or threatened.
  • thinks TW are safe in all male spaces and should use them.
  • says she is biologically male (might even have said man? not sure).

They would do anything to silence Jenn.

2BthatUnnoticed · 09/08/2019 09:12

These are the “warning signs” they handed out in case anyone came across any scary T**Fs... These were not at Pride but the Dyke March.

Actual lesbians are no longer allowed on the Dyke March.

Fair enough Jessica, especially if you have such negative experiences with him. But I do note that despite that, you still said it was wrong. Because we know that however little we care about an individual, that individual too has the same civil liberties and human rights we do. And we not only accept that, we need it to be that way. That's the point of universal human rights. They apply to all. No matter how toxic, how much of an arsehole someone may be.

But I fear the other side in this debate would only too happily deny us whatever civil liberties and human rights we have that present obstacles to their desire.

And I am sorry you still have to face this shit. In 2019. It makes me so so angry when people do that.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 09/08/2019 09:47

Not just an arsehole, an aggressive racist who would deny rights for others based on our exchange.

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 09/08/2019 09:58

They carry weapons.

But we're the problem.

They try to catch people in nets

But we're the problem.

CharlieParley · 09/08/2019 11:06

Noted, Jessica and not surprised based on some other stuff I read by him.

Those leaflets are something else 2BthatUnnoticed

They [TERFS and SWERFS] will egg each other on and on to ever more extreme actions and views until violence inevitably erupts.

are actively recruiting your children [...] they will manipulate them into believing that trans women and sex work are the source of all the world's problems

using outdated and exclusionary language like [...] biological female

refer to sex workers by degrading and misogynist slurs. "Sluts", "hookers", "dirty whores", prostituted women", "pimped girl"

Constantly conflate sex workers with rapists and pedophiles

DanaPhoenix · 09/08/2019 11:56

Those leaflets. Terfs are actively recruiting children? Good grief, projection much?

How many fingers Winston?

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 09/08/2019 12:11

These people are dangerously out of control. Whatever ones opinion of Jenn Smith as an individual they took this net to the event so presumably they were planning/willing to use it on any sane voices.

It is utterly totalitarian.

allmywhat · 09/08/2019 12:14

That leaflet! I feel like among all the nonsense there is only one significant idea in it, and all the rest of the bullshit is thrown in to distract.

TERFs are grooming 13 year old girls into thinking sex work is bad.

You can always know these people by their accusations. The bizarre accusation of TERFs grooming young girls tells us a lot about the author of this leaflet. Notice how the thing finishes off with a barely coherent screed about sex work and pedophilia.

It's a very disturbing read.

zebrasdontwearbras · 09/08/2019 12:20

When it comes to TRAs, a good thing to remember is "accusation is admission".

Datun · 09/08/2019 13:26

God those leaflets. Feminists call sex workers dirty whores and sex workers are NOT insatiable animals (as if that's what feminists call them) and that we hang out with incels.

There is some hard-core insanity going on there. Where on earth did those come from?

These people need strict supervision.

TriptychDebbie · 09/08/2019 13:27

Sorry to hear about the racist comments @JessicaWakefieldSV

I've also seen some things that I'm not happy with, but like you I recognise that we're having to get into bed with people we'd otherwise avoid.

I do feel sorry for Jenn in some ways, but that doesn't mean I agree with everything they've said. Unfortunately this thing is bigger than any of us and we're having to swallow some bitter pills in our fight towards erasing this insanity.

No, you’ve misunderstood me. I won’t ever support an active racist or someone who is that aggressive to women and then lies about it. I will not ‘get into bed’ with just anyone. Disagreements over minor things or respectfully disagreeing on some things, is quite different from working with someone that’s actually fucking racist. I personally have principles and working with racists is not something I’ll compromise on. All I agreed with here, was that nobody should be treated like this. That’s it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 09/08/2019 13:43

Sorry to hear that Jessica Thanks
