The way that Jenn was treated is appalling. I hope they sue the backside off Vancouver Pride.

As in that this person was racist towards you.

TriptychDebbie · 09/08/2019 13:55

Of course I'd never support a racist @JessicaWakefieldSV and I've probably phrased what I've written badly, but what I'm trying to say is that I'm seeing a lot of uneasy alliances at the moment and it's this one issue that kind of unites us. Beyond that, many of the 'allies' are not the kind of people I would normally associate with.

Racism is not the same as disagreeing on tactics or left wing women working on single issues with right wing women. Yes I think you are wording it badly and I understand you don’t support racism. However, there are lines and I’m not giving sympathy to someone who is racist. I don’t know why others are, particularly as their aggression is known. The exchange was disturbing to me, while I have screenshots I don’t want to out myself so I’m not sharing them. Quite honestly, this person is a disturbed individual and I don’t think they should get even a mention here, but I understand not all of us have seen or been in this kind of exchange with them- mine was last year. I also don’t want to start another ‘thing’ on these fine boards so I’ll leave you all to doing what you think is right for yourselves.

TERFs are grooming 13 year old girls into thinking sex work is bad

Well, beat me with a feather pillow, yes, I’m very guilty of wanting my 13 yr old dgd to think sex work is bad. Because it is.

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 09/08/2019 14:15

Those leaflets: remember, with narcissists, all accusations are admissions.

Well quite. As a controversial viewpoint it's up there with dropping litter and kicking puppies is bad.

Fraggling · 09/08/2019 14:17

Lol at those leaflets they are hilarious.

Yes yes feminists are very down on those who sell sex, notice not a mention of the men who buy it! Prostitutes are paedophiles what does that even mean? Men who buy sex are the ones wo are interested in underage/ children and will go to great lengths to get it...

I find it fascinating that terf and swerf are used together. They have nothing in common. Apart from, oh wait, women with boundaries who want to protect against male sex offenders. What a bunch of bastards eh.

Men have always wanted women (mothers) away from the picture, for obvious reasons.

Fraggling · 09/08/2019 14:23

Jessica the person sounds like an arsehole.

Still they were trying to catch them in a net (!) bc of their placard about gender, not bc they are racist.

So anyone with a gc placard runs the risk of being caught in a net (!!!!!) at pride, racist or otherwise.

Worth telling i think?

Datun · 09/08/2019 14:28

So do I. I'm also bewildered about how many people are invested in the concept of SWERF.

Because, from the outside, it looks like they all must be punters/pimps. But they can't be, surely? There are too many.

TheTitOfTheIceberg · 09/08/2019 14:45

I'm appalled that something as minor (in the actual, real-world scheme of things rather than our new upside down that we find ourselves in) as disagreeing with trans ideology by way of standing quietly with a sign critical of Pride can result in being chased with a fucking net. Absolutely wrong.

However, there's a salutary lesson here for Smith that believing one group is 'lesser' than another can lead to people in the so-called 'superior' group feeling that this sort of behaviour is justified. Ultimately, what's the difference between the TRAs view of GC individuals (who are usually women or at least supportive of women) and Smith's view of POC, other than the identity of the person in the net? Just because he's choosing not to shit on us with other TRAs doesn't mean I'm happy to give him a pass for his racist behaviour.

Those leaflets are utter batshit. Do you think the authors genuinely believe any of their bullshit?

^ thank you. Indeed.

I am pretty sure the primary agenda of those leaflets is: pedophilia first, transactivism second. In this case the transactivism may be purely a figleaf. Dr EM found some discussions among pedophiles explicitly planning to use "TERF" and "sex negative" accusations to make pedophilia more acceptable.

The accusation about manipulating young teenagers gives it away, it's so bizarre and out of the blue. The only way it makes sense is if the author has a particular obsession with grooming young girls and is worried that feminists are going to get to them first - i.e classic projection.

Combine that with the unusual focus on "sex work" - which TRAs often mention but it's not normally quite so front and centre - and the rant at the end about pedophilia and sex workers, which clearly reveals what is on the author's mind. They want to be able to manipulate teenagers into "sex work" without repercussions.

Canada, get a fucking grip on yourself. No, not like that.

Weezol · 09/08/2019 16:10

I recognise that we're having to get into bed with people we'd otherwise avoid.

No, 'we' are not. You might be happy to do so, but I won't compromise my integrity in order to have an 'ally'. Fuck that.

Ornery · 09/08/2019 16:26

Indeed. My horror is based on the fact that pride staff saw fit to carry nets to catch dissenters in, not support for Jenn Smith. (I avoid JS largely because his ideology is wrapped in religious ideologies - as so much gender critical thought is over here. It’s hard to find a GC mouthpiece that doesn’t rely on religion as a raison d’être.)

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 09/08/2019 16:37

I really don't understand this idea that if you agree with a person on one thing you are somehow 'in bed with' them.

On this issue I agree with all sorts of people from Ben Shapiro to Julie Bindel. That says nothing about my view of either of those people beyond we agree on this one point. I'm not 'in bed with' either of them. I hate this weird polarisation where somehow you're expected to agree with a whole raft of unrelated views before you can express an opinion on a specific one.

Fraggling · 09/08/2019 16:59

'It’s hard to find a GC mouthpiece that doesn’t rely on religion as a raison d’être'

Really?

What do you mean by 'mouthpiece'?

I've never seen a gc argument that invoked religion, personally. Maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong people?

Would Martina n count as a 'mouthoiece'for eg? She is gc and recently had a televised documentary shown

vaginafetishist · 09/08/2019 19:03

Oh Canada. Joni Mitchell must be weeping.

SophoclesTheFox · 09/08/2019 19:08

I’d no idea who Jen Smith was when I posted that I was horrified.

I just generally object to people being scooped up in nets for holding signs up in public, whether I agree with them or not.

AnotherAdultHumanFemale · 09/08/2019 20:09

I agree, I think anyone, whatever their views, being chased around, assaulted, attacked, scooped up in nets etc is wrong. I don't agree with Nigel Farage and co but I don't agree with them being physically attacked and having milkshakes thrown at them. Once you get to that level, democracy has been lost and you've descended to chaos and violence.

Same with free speech. I don't agree with right wing religious people on most matters, but it's not fair for me to get free speech and them to be silenced. That's not how democracy works.

Ornery · 10/08/2019 05:38

In Canada, Fraggling. Other than MM, the GC voices are largely fighting from a religious background. There is no other excuse - if you are religious you might get away with it. A belief in biology is only culturally acceptable if you are devout. No one else dares stick their head above the parapet. Martina doesn’t hang out in Alberta. Or BC. Jenn Smith does.
It’s not like the UK. The law has already been passed.

Fraggling · 10/08/2019 08:09

Oh i see.

Yes that makes sense.

MM is the most famous gc voice from canada though I think? At least to the outside world.
