From Heather B-E:

"Britain's experiment with puberty blockers is set to be exposed tonight on Newsnight BBC 2 at 10.30 pm. Michael Biggs chapter in our latest book broke the story! t.co/FV5FLye1oX"

This should be interesting....

It's the BBC though.

Jellylegsni · 22/07/2019 20:47

The BBC seem to be really changing their tune.

EweSurname · 22/07/2019 20:47

Thank fuck! Can’t believe it’s being covered on the bbc

Campervan69 · 22/07/2019 20:49

Read the article it does seem to be actually investigating this.

"GIDS lowered the age at which it offers children puberty blockers - but early data showed some taking the drugs reported an increase in thoughts of suicide and self-harm. The Health Research Authority is now investigating claims brought by Newsnight."

Article by Michael Biggs.

I think the BBC might be starting to see that actually they're the ones who stand to be "on the wrong side of history" and are trying to balance themselves out.

JoyceJeffries · 22/07/2019 20:56

This could be interesting. Bit of a reverse ferret going on?

Rubidium · 22/07/2019 21:00

Looks like Emily Maitlis is presenting tonight.

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 22/07/2019 21:05

Or more likely they are paying lip service because they have to do something due to the way they are funded.

OvaHere · 22/07/2019 21:07

And so it begins!

I think I'll reserve total judgement until it's aired though.

ThePurported · 22/07/2019 21:10

Looks like Emily Maitlis is presenting tonight.

Interesting. She retweeted something about Balldemort the other day.

EweSurname · 22/07/2019 21:14

I wondered whether that might have been connected - if she’s presenting im sure it must be

JessicaWakefieldSV · 22/07/2019 21:16

Shit! I am genuinely surprised.

OhHolyJesus · 22/07/2019 21:17

And puberty blockers was the topic on R4 today. PB seems to be their angle at the moment. Maybe all the complaints MNers have been sending in means a balance is being reinstated? I don't like to be hopeful in case I'm disappointed but Newsnight a big deal.

Popchyk · 22/07/2019 21:24

Interesting.

Sounds like it is very specific to the puberty blockers study that GIDS seemed to abandon (only to hastily revive it after Prof. Michael Biggs asked awkward questions).

These are interesting points:

"This early data was not shared with the Health Research Authority, despite its demands for updates on the study over a period of three years".

"In 2014, despite the patchwork of information about the study - which was still running - a change in Gids' policy was approved by NHS England: children with gender dysphoria, who were just beginning puberty, could now be eligible for blockers.

Gids' data suggests that between 2012 and 2018, 267 people under the age of 15 started using the blockers.

The service told Newsnight the use of hormone blockers at this earlier age "remains only available to a carefully selected group".

NHS England says the policy change followed an evaluation of the study. Newsnight has asked for a copy of this evaluation - but none was provided".

Sounds like Newsnight will be asking questions about the stuff that Prof. Biggs and Heather B-E have already raised.

We know about them, but it's the first time that the public at large will have heard these questions.

About time.

NeurotrashWarrior · 22/07/2019 21:43

I still fail to understand how any of this came about without more scrutiny, research and accountability.

It was carefully planned that way

A lack of scrutiny, research and accountability seems to be prevalent in all areas involving this ideology, from children, to women's services and political representation, to law change.

I shall be watching Newsnight with great interest.

ThePurported · 22/07/2019 22:13

Neurotrash It really is baffling. I've come to the conclusion that it's linked to the general re-emergence of sexist stereotypes and acceptance of cosmetic surgery. Medical professionals aren't immune to prejudice or social pressure.
I also wonder about the motives of some of the people working in this field. People like Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy. Is she really as deranged as she sounds, or just greedy for more 'customers'?

crsacre · 22/07/2019 22:18

Johanna Olson-Kennedy is married to a transman, Aydin Olson-Kennedy:

Eaudear · 22/07/2019 22:24

I saw this on the BBC app and was also surprised at how 'impartial' the article was, given that the other week the BBC was telling us that 'trans people are having their existence debated'.

The thing is, you just can't argue it can you? Experimenting on kids with these drugs? You can't trot out the old 'this is just like homophobia' line for this shite.

Wrong side of history....

RedToothBrush · 22/07/2019 22:24

Oh has Matlis been doing some journalisting?

Would explain her doing digging earlier this week.

I thought it interesting to see Nick Cohen of the guardian/observer who I always thought a v good journalist who hated identity politics having a go at Janice over trans stuff and talking about a tweet by Titania McGraf. It looked like he thought that the Jonathan Yaniv story was a spoof made up by another journalist he didn't like.

Ricky Gervais has certainly been doing some publicising this week too.

There's a certain feeling of a bubble about to burst going on here.

ThePurported · 22/07/2019 22:27

Oh, I didn't know that crsacre. I find her views terrifying.

LangCleg · 22/07/2019 22:29

Just getting ready to watch. Am prepared to be disappointed/underwhelmed. The conversations we're having are so far ahead of sclerotic and captured organisations, I end up expecting too much. Hopefully, the BBC will finally surprise me.
