Misandry is a real word

This debate has always interested me. I read a very convincing article about ten years ago, written by a man, explaining why misandry isn't a real word. He listed the etymology and history of the word and so on. He was also an excellent writer and I admire good writing. I can't find the article. I will look again for it.

In searching for it, I came across a men's rights activism forum where they're discussing a thread by the title of "Misandry is a Real Word"

news.mensactivism.org/articles/02/01/02/1631228.shtml

Personally I'm with the writer of the article, but the men's rights activism forum make a convincing argument

And your point is?

ClosdesMouches · 21/07/2019 22:02
Hmm
Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:06

Can you tell us what you find is a convincing argument? I'm not going to read an MRA forum.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:12

Well they have lots of discussion about their efforts to get the word put in the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Copy and pastes of emails regarding this. They must've been busy getting it put in other dictionaries too

And you again.

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:14

Why is that convincing though? MRAs are MRAs. Of course they want a word that embodies "women do it too".

sackrifice · 21/07/2019 22:15

Hmmm.

This is a totally unexpected move.

How very strange.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 21/07/2019 22:16

Yawn.

Oooo look a grey rock

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:16

Well as I said in my OP I'm personally with the writer of the article I read. The MRAs do make a convincing argument, doesn't mean I'm actually convinced

www.lexico.com/en/definition/misandry

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:18

But what is their convincing argument? Don't you want to say?

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:24

Well there's also talk about misandry being a popular word, as proof of its validity.

KatvonHostileExtremist

And you again

I'm sorry, who are you?

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:26

Misogyny = rape, domestic violence, FGM, female poverty, gynocide, prostitution, pornography

Misandry = feminism

The scale is weighted in one direction only

AccioWine · 21/07/2019 22:29

What has misandry got to do with the Feminism board? This board is pro women, not anti men. A subtle but important distinction.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:31

Well I was called a "frothing misandrist" today on mumsnet, and it made me think gosh that word still around then.

I remember it became popular around the same time as the word "kyriarchy". Kyriarchy was a word used by people who didn't think patriarchy was real. Kyriarchy has died a death, I haven't heard it in a long while. But misandrist is clearly making a revival in 2019

LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 22:35

Misandry is a real word.

The most convincing argument for misandry being a real concept is most of what you and a poster who hasn't been seen recently called Twicemummy2 (or similar) post here.

BoronationStreet · 21/07/2019 22:37

Fml...an argument for misandry on the feminism boards...Confused

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:37

This is the article I think you're thinking about OP:

adonismirror.com/pdf/10152006_leader_misandry_and_misanthropy.pdf

It's right that a man would respond to this nonsense.

Erythronium · 21/07/2019 22:39

Misandry would have to be equal and opposite to misogyny for it to be a legitimate term, and there is literally no equivalence.

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:39

Misandry = feminism, as a concept no?

But we're not talking about the concept of misandry ( man-hating) on this thread. That would be a derail

We're talking about the etymology of the word misandry. There are arguments for and against, that the word isn't real

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:40

Yep that's the one Erythronium. Adonis Mirror. I remember now. Such a good damn writer. I'm going to read it again now. It's been a decade or so since I read it

OP posts:
Hecateh · 21/07/2019 22:40

Of course it's a real word, it's a collection of letters that have been given a meaning. IE a word.

Of course there are women that hate men - on the whole they are totally powerless, their hatred of men is what it is, it has no effect on men (in general, although there are individual men married to women like this who do suffer). There are a few women with some 'power' who do spread this and it affects a few people it is true. Individual white people suffer from 'reverse' racism - society doesn't generally.
in the same way individual men 'suffer' from misogyny but society doesn't, whereas society does suffer from misogyny. Both men and women suffer from the effects of misogyny - the same as society as a whole suffers from the effects of racism

sakura184 · 21/07/2019 22:42

Am I being misandrist by saying that Adonis Mirror is the only man I've ever come across that has really and truly helped feminists
