Transgender hate crime up by 81%

I thought someone else would have posted this as it's practically headline on BBC.

This is sad. Nobody should be being abused.

I saw this and was wondering what others thought too. The trouble is, I'm automatically cynical about anything the BBC ( and Guardian) publish on this subject.
Personally, I would like to see a definition of hate crime and a breakdown of the figures into types of offences.

frankexchangeofviews · 27/06/2019 07:04

From the article :

‘West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.’

Hmmmmmmm. Hate crime/ thought crime : ...potato / potata as far as WYP and SYP are concerned

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 07:05

In a world where using the wrong pronoun is a hate crime, these statistics don't surprise me.

AyeRobot · 27/06/2019 07:07

I'm still working out what to say so I don't get banned.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 27/06/2019 07:07

Think this is one where the break-down of the data would be useful.

We already know that retweeting limericks “counts”.

GirlDownUnder · 27/06/2019 07:09

I think hate crime should be better defined, so we can actually see what type of hate crime is being committed, by who, and to whom. We can then work on solving the issue. The BCC report says

What is hate crime?
A hate crime is defined as "any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice" based on one of five categories: religion, faith or belief; race, ethnicity or nationality; sexual orientation; disability; or gender identity.

I think the word perceived is problematic. Do any of these crimes get further action from the police ie how many hate crimes are prosecuted? Are the BBC including hate incidence in these numbers?

What do the % look like for other hate crimes?

The report would have been much more robust if the BBC had included the stats. they are referencing.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 27/06/2019 07:13

I read that Brody Jenner is being castigated for referring to Bruce, before transition, as he. To be clear, this is him talking about his father before any kind of transition or change of name.

If misgendering wasn't considered a hate crime I might take these statistics more seriously. But given that my children and I have been subjected to disablist abuse and attacks bad enough that when the police did nothing we felt compelled to move house, I think that considering misgendering a hate crime is extremely self indulgent.

Of course nobody should be abused and attacked, but it's very, very interesting that attacks (both verbal and physical) on women because they're women aren't being recorded in the same way.

Why is that?

GeorgeFayne · 27/06/2019 07:13

I'd like to know more details about what is included as a "hate crime." Liking a limerick on Twitter? "Misgendering" by a clerk in a store? Refusing to wax male genitalia?

SarahTancredi · 27/06/2019 07:14

Wouldnt it be interesting to see what hate crime stats against women were. Except conveniently sex isnt a protected characteristic.

And not instantly knowing some six fit 6 person with a beard making zero "effort" at all is stilla woman still constitutes a hate crime Hmm

"Terfs" get death and rape threats
Where the fuck are the police then. Hounding women that's where....

OrchidInTheSun · 27/06/2019 07:18

They should rename it thought crime

SarahTancredi · 27/06/2019 07:21

They should rename it thought crime

Or perhaps existence crime.

Since everything about us is so triggering and offensive. Why they wanna be something they hate so bloody much I dont know

MoobaaMoobaa · 27/06/2019 07:23

It was said a while ago, that this is what would happen. these are cases of 'reported' hate crime. You only have to report anything and say its because you are transgender it is recorded, even if it's spurious and the police say it's not a crime, It is still recorded as a report of hate crime.

It's why the TRA are encouraging a reporting every single little thing they can Because the report gets put in and used in larger statistics. Then organisations see a 'problem' or a rise in it, and someone then thinks there needs something done about it like more funding better training more awareness programs ect.

The BBC are doing exactly what was predicted.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 27/06/2019 07:25

I’m not surprised given that misgendering is considered a hate crime. I highly doubt the statistic represents actual hate crimes, as they were originally defined.

Mermoose · 27/06/2019 07:27

‘West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.’

They record the retweeting of limericks as hate crimes. Is every image of every porn site recorded as a hate crime against women? I genuinely do care if trans people are being abused or attacked, but these figures mean next to nothing. Which is why what's going on at the moment is no good for anyone, including trans people.

Fuckthepainaway · 27/06/2019 07:32

I wonder how much of that statistic has been contributed solely by the fake lawyer.

Hurt feelz/thought crime. It’s utterly pathetic when there is so much actual crime

[pupils and teachers] I meant

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 27/06/2019 07:36

I was just about to start a thread on this. It's given me the rage over my tea and toast. As a woman who reported over a decade of domestic abuse and had nothing done about it by GMP I don't feel much sympathy for anyone who has been the "victim" of people refusing to have science turned on its head and agree they can change sex.

HorsewithnoHoldsBarred · 27/06/2019 07:39

West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.

So three years ago there could have been just one hate crime and this year three hate crimes?

We really need the actual figures to make any sense but it sounds like the link ain't worth clicking.

BBC, eh?

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 27/06/2019 07:39

After having witnessed so much hyperbole and self dramatisation I have no confidence that these stats represent what most people would consider any sort of crime.

It's the boy who cried wolf phenomenon.

Manclife1 · 27/06/2019 07:39

There’s is a difference between a hate crime and a hate incident. For it to be a hate ‘crime’ there has to be an actual criminal offence such as assault, robbery etc.

Hate incident involves no crimes at all, so using the wrong pronoun would be a hate ‘incident’ unless there was much more to it.

MoobaaMoobaa · 27/06/2019 07:48

Manclife
somewhere on here it was confirmed that all reports that are 'reported' as a hate crime (whether they turned out to be or not) are logged as a 'report of hate crime'.

I wish my memory was good enough to remember which thread it was on.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2019 07:52

Nice neutral analysis at the end there Hmm

'Transgender people have their existence debated on a near daily basis across UK media, and several activists believe this negative attention reinforces the poor treatment they receive on our streets.

Whilst the gender debate rages on, many of those at the heart of it will have to continue living in fear"

Please log it by reporting on the Police Scotland online hate crime form (you can say you don't need them to contact you back). We need the stats

James Morton of Scottish Trans Alliance. Jus' sayin'.
