Hi, I just signed up to post this...I don't know if Michele is on here or if anyone here knows her, but I think she could do with a bit of support right now. TRAs are trying to get her sacked from her editorship of a well respected journal, Disability and Society. There is a petition circulating, signed by hundreds of academics and disability rights activists, mostly from US and Canada, but a few from the UK too. All day members of the journal's editorial board have been resigning their positions ie they are supporting the petition and demanding Michele's removal on the grounds of transphobia. it's a pile-on of the worst kind.
I am not on Twitter and don't know how else to contact Michele to offer support. She is not appearing on Northumbria University's website, so I don't know how to contact her...if anyone knows her, please do reach out to her...she is being treated shockingly. I'm really upset about it.

Thanks I shall enquire and come back

PhrixPhrox · 19/06/2019 22:02

That's horrendous.
I met Michele at the meeting in Newcastle last week and she's absolutely lovely. Not a bigoted or bad bone in her body.
The TRAs chanting outside were ridiculous though, claiming that they were not allowed in (it was a public meeting and advertised as such) and when a couple of them were invited in, they just screamed abuse although it was one very aggressive middle-aged man in particular who did this.
If they had actually bothered to join the meeting, they would have found that it was totally reasonable, no hatred or calling for trans people to die (ffs!) as they have claimed and even more surprisingly, no hatred of trans children. The footage will be available for viewing soon although I'm sure that none of the activists outside will bother to watch it.
Michele was as gentle, unassuming and non-aggressive as it is possible to be and she went to the top of my shero list which is already populated with some fantastic women.

NeurotrashWarrior · 19/06/2019 22:16

She's on twitter?

I doubt it will be easy to contact her in another way.

I agree she's lovely and clear and compassionate.

Do you have links to these petitions or any further info?

LangCleg · 19/06/2019 22:30

www.ipetitions.com/petition/ds

Here is the petition.

Apollo440 · 19/06/2019 22:34

We need a counter petition.

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 22:40

Jeez idiots. Internet let’s the idiots flourish and enjoy their idiocy. Wher in real life they would just be ignored

CassianAndor · 19/06/2019 22:44

Email Taylor & Francis direct (publishers of the journal)? Sorry, autocorrect won’t let me make it clicky.

CassianAndor · 19/06/2019 22:44

Oh! It is clicky.

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 22:46

I always thought that ppl who where acedemics or went to uni where clever

Now am seeing that they are either cowards or thick as mince

Can’t decide which

AnyOldPrion · 19/06/2019 22:46

Those behind this are vicious. Attacking others to prevent their anti-science bubble from bursting.

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 22:47

Were were ffs

CassianAndor · 19/06/2019 22:48

Actually, this is better - ignore previous link

Squidzilla · 19/06/2019 22:49

If you truly want to support her, you can do it without calling her detractors “idiots” or “thick as mince,” please. If you do that on Twitter it won’t go down well with disability studies people, nor would it go down well with Moore herself.

YomTov · 19/06/2019 23:02

Thanks to CassianAndor for the contact link. I've written and hope others will. I too was at the meeting in Newcastle and have heard Michele speak previously. She is the most thoughtful and caring person you could hope to meet, thinking incisively and with broad understanding. That she is being attacked in this way is simply horrendous.

Manderleyagain · 19/06/2019 23:07

I will email the journal publisher tomorrow in support of Michele too. I have heard her speak recently too.

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 23:09

Why not squid they are. Don’t police me. Look where her being nice has got her.

A petition against her.

Let’s be nice

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 23:11

What would you like me to call them ?

Put words in my mouth then.

SmallHaddockAndChips · 19/06/2019 23:14

I see Sally Hines has signed it.

Squidzilla · 19/06/2019 23:24

I can understand your respect and affection for Moore, but you also need to understand the field in which she works - that will give you an understanding of why my request isn’t policing, but a request for respect for the population of which she is passionate.

Squidzilla · 19/06/2019 23:27

Of which she is a passionate defender, that should read.

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 23:30

But squid. They want rid of her. They have a petition against her

What do you want people to,do. Stay silent ?

Squidzilla · 19/06/2019 23:33

I’m just advising you that if you want to argue with people in her field - disability studies - perhaps using insulting terms related to intellect might not be the way to go. lol

DanaPhoenix · 20/06/2019 00:01

I understand where littlbrowndog is coming from, as someone that didn't attend Uni myself. Why are academics held in such high esteem? So much of what they come out with is out of touch with the reality for the everyday man and woman in the street.

I also see Squidzilla's point. Now ableist will be thrown at us, along with bigot, transphobe, etc.

This is where advocates for those with disabilities better sit up and take notice. I've already seen plenty of times when mention is made of a third space it very quickly turns to accessible toilets. Not necessarily on Mumsnet but certainly on the internet.

GrumpyCatLives · 20/06/2019 00:03

Which university does Michele work at?

dianjo · 20/06/2019 05:37

Michele is at Essex University
