Councillor wants Mayor to make all toilets gender neutral

Local paper today:

www.gazettelive.co.uk/news/teesside-news/mayor-quizzed-gender-neutral-toilets-16437625

I am planning on writing to the Mayor to be vocal in my objections, but I may need some guidance as well please.

Traditionally toilets have been gender specific, divided into two categories: male and female.

First of all I will make it very clear that they have been divided by SEX.

make a start by designating all council building toilets as gender-neutral.

I guess this is where I need to start quoting the Equality Act? and that it is a legitimate aim to separate by sex. I am also going to quote the (2011) cenus figures about the diversity of the town and the significantly high Muslim population.

I understand, clearly, there will be some concerns from some councillors and members of the public but the risk does not increase once public toilets become gender neutral.

In fact, if anyone has any intention in committing a crime at present, they will do so.

This is about creating a much more safer environment for transgender and non binary people.

The first really is not true is it? and the last is just about getting women to suck it up

I am having lots of thoughts that I will keep to myself.

I do have a lot of respect for Ellie though, I don't necessarily agree with all of her viewpoints but she is always fairly respectful when voicing them.

Here's the Edward Lord screenshot though...

That is so... just so wrong. Sodor is missing it’s controller.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 15/07/2019 21:10

Well what do you know #ThisNeverHappens happening right before our eyes.

Anyone else wondering if the long (side) hair is part of a convenient transition?

wacademia · 15/07/2019 23:48

OP and any Teeside council staff reading this: employers are obliged by law to provide single-sex toilets to their staff. This includes councils employing staff in council buildings. The only exception is if the toilets are in individual rooms with doors that lock from the inside. Provision 20, para 2c of The Workplace (Health, Safety, and Welfare) Regulations 1992 is the relevant law.

GCAcademic · 16/07/2019 00:02

Why are there so many of these weird-looking middle-aged men who are desperate to bring about a situation where they can share toilets with women and girls?

Well, it seems the question I asked last month about this guy has been answered even more quickly than I’d anticipated.

GirlDownUnder · 16/07/2019 02:23

It feels like the powers that be are wilfully blind when it comes to risks faced by women and girls, and bias blind when it comes to who poses that risk.

We're the bloody chickens running around shouting at the farmer that there's a fox in the hen house. Farmer paternally pats us on the head, while holding the hen house door open with a Foxes Welcome mat!

We CAN make a difference

"Gender-neutral toilets trial put on hold after 'mixed response' from public
Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston wants to consult more thoroughly on the suggestion"

It is understood that Mr Preston's decision is unrelated to Cllr Smith being charged with child sex offences earlier this week

Really? Really? He doesn’t see any link or anything remotely dodgy about a man pushing one single agenda that would allow grown men such as himself access to kids in an enclosed space where they may we’ll be on their own?

ZebrasAreBras · 17/07/2019 16:12

Great news!

Now, London!! Edward Lord, care to review a decision to make all central London toilets, and the Hampstead Women's Pond! gender neutral - based on a consultation where you disregarded tens of thousands of replies?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/07/2019 16:15

You are kidding right?

Baguetteaboutit · 17/07/2019 16:17

It is understood that Mr Preston's decision is unrelated to Cllr Smith being charged with child sex offences earlier this week

Isn't that just a bit of arse covering phrasing that allows them to raise both issues in the same article without making any assumptions of guilt?

ZebrasAreBras · 17/07/2019 16:23

Who, me? I wish I was.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/07/2019 16:24

Yes - that one is still in his denial shell for now.

ZebrasAreBras · 17/07/2019 16:28

twitter.com/2010equality/status/1130973355849461765?s=21

This is what Edward Lord has done - railroaded through, against the wishes of women. A complete disregard of women's rights.

SunsetBeetch · 17/07/2019 16:29

Mr Preston probably has to be careful what he says about Councillor Creep given it's a legal matter. At least he's realised that there are differences in opinion on this. Hopefully he will do a proper, fair consultation. We'll be watching!

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 16:30

Most city (council funded) public toilets are unisex, have been for years, they are stand alone booths and work fine.

MoleSmokes · 17/07/2019 16:39

Which city is that, @stucknoue ?

ZebrasAreBras · 17/07/2019 16:44

It is understood that Mr Preston's decision is unrelated to Cllr Smith being charged with child sex offences earlier this week

Ha, the decision to put on hold, the same week the counsellor campaigning for it was charged with child sex offences, is just another astounding coincidence, I'm sure Wink

Popchyk · 06/09/2019 14:43

Just an update to this.

Councillor David Smith has appeared in court accused of sexually abusing three children and four teenagers.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/17880264.middlesbrough-councillor-accused-child-sex-offences/?ref=twtrec

Court case is not scheduled until June 2020. Plenty of time to consider his gender identity now if he so wishes.

Like Tony Prince of Sheffield who was arrested in June 2016 for the possession of over a thousand images of the worst type of child sexual abuse. By the time the case came to court over three years later, the judge said that Prince had waited too long for justice, so was let off.

Tony Prince was identifying as Toni by the time the case got to court.

www.thestar.co.uk/news/crime/sex-offender-spared-jail-following-unjust-delay-by-police-in-sheffield-485493

Amazing the number of middle-aged men who suddenly identify as a woman after they are charged with sexual offences.

AnyOldPrion · 06/09/2019 14:48

Amazing the number of middle-aged men who try to push for increased access to woman’s spaces, then are found to gave committed sexual offences.

TerfTalk · 06/09/2019 14:48

Single sex toilets are already gender neutral surely?

SunsetBeetch · 07/09/2019 12:50

Update on Councillor Creep:

The councillor who threatened to make Middlesbrough a gender-neutral town has appeared in court again on child-abuse charges.
He's accused of abusing 7 kids but insists he can still remain as a councillor.
His gender-neutral masterplan has been cancelled.

www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/17880264.middlesbrough-councillor-accused-child-sex-offences/?ref=twtrec

A COUNCILLOR accused of engaging in sexual activity with children and teenagers has denied all of the charges against him.

Cllr David Smith, who represents Coulby Newham on Middlesbrough Council, pleaded not guilty to seven charges said to have occurred several years ago.

The 30-year-old is accused of having sex with a child, engaging in sexual activity with two other children and four teenagers.

Wearing a white patterned shirt and glasses, Cllr Smith appeared at Teesside Crown Court where he denied all of the allegations against him.

He was released on bail until his four-day trial scheduled for June 1, 2020.

Following the accusations, Cllr Smith, of Rainsford Crescent, Middlesbrough, resigned from the Conservative Party but stated he intends to remain as a councillor.

In a statement he previously said: “I completely reject these spurious allegations and removing myself from the party will ensure I can focus all my efforts on fighting to clear my name.”

Popchyk · 07/09/2019 13:52

Charges as serious as these should be dealt with swiftly, no?

Waiting another year before the trial is shameful. Those poor victims having the prospect of a trial hanging over them for so long.

And 3 years for Tony Prince to come to trial, only to be told he'd had too long a wait therefore no jail for him.

SunsetBeetch · 07/09/2019 15:18

Agree Popchyk this isn't good enough.

BadgerOfDoom · 07/09/2019 15:35

Its very simple; make the mens mixed sex

Not keen on this idea as a bloke tbh. Separate provision is the best option IMO.

Bit out of order to moan about people speaking on women's behalf but then to speak on men's behalf yourself.
