Use of trans identified male as opposed to transwoman No2.

happydappy2 · 16/06/2019 22:21

MNHQ There has been much written recently about how the controlling of the words we use, is very misleading. Many women reject the word transwoman as it can be misunderstood. In light of this, would you reconsider yr guidelines that Trans Identified Male can not be used? It would seem a more factually accurate description of a human male who presents in a stereotypically female way. Thank you.

the general consensus seems to be that individuals should choose & use their own language responsibly?

It seems to keep going back to this

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:26

And no women do not call each other chaps all the time...again, i didnt say that

Then why try and excuse using the term chaps by saying that your friends use it?

We all know exactly what the OP was saying when they used that term.

And the feeling regarding friends is completely mutual.

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:26

I do use 'chaps' all the time in mixed classrooms. Has yet to upset anyone

Well it wouldn't would it? Context. I'm presuming you didn't spend all lesson calling the females men or blokes if they said you didn't like something, then at the end say "right, chaps!" Then "what, I call all my female friends that, don't yours?"

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:27

if they said something you didn't like that should read.

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:28

Then why try and excuse using the term chaps by saying that your friends use it?

Exactly, I mean WTF lol, I'm just glad it's not just me who sees all this for once Grin
I mean just... OK.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:30

then why try and excuse using the term chaps by saying that your friends use it

I didn't,

You think i did...thats fine

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:33

It would actually be really funny if we did have mutual friends

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:33

Definitely not just you LimeKiwi

I can't understand why they do it. I mean, they know that we know what they meant and they know that anyone reading the thread will see what they wrote, will know what they meant and will then see them denying it once challenged.

Any sensible person reading this will be thinking "wtf? Of course chaps means men. How can anyone deny it?"

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:33

Ive heard People refer to women as

Mate, chaps, and guys

You're insinuating that women get referred to being chaps and we're all just imagining it, it's what women are called within friendship groups.
Even though we've repeatedly been called men Confused

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:34

It would actually be really funny if we did have mutual friends

Wouldn't happen. I'm very discerning when it comes to choosing friends.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:35

Of course chaps means men

Yes of course it does

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:35

It would actually be really funny if we did have mutual friends

It actually would, I mean you could be a close one for all I know Grin
To which if I found out it was I'd be like FFS let's not talk politics/shite can we go down the pub and forget either of us ever said anything lol

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:36

Have to agree with that lime

But i think you know we agree on a fair bit Grin

PurpleCrowbar · 17/06/2019 20:37

Nope. They'd find it very funny if I did that, though.

I mainly channel the 'Right, chaps, so for your homework...' thing because I play on being an expat Brit.

'Whizzo miss, corking plan, super! We'll hand it in tomorrow inshallah!'

It's a mutual joke. If anyone asked me not to call them a 'chap' I'd make a mental note not to, because I can just as easily use 'ok year 12...'.

But being able to describe male people as male is significant, in the context of women's rights. It's not a thing to hand wave away.

I'd defend your right NOT to do that - if you prefer to use 'transwoman' I think that's fine.

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:37

Wouldn't happen. I'm very discerning when it comes to choosing friends

I dunno, sometimes on my FB people come out with Brexit bollox or Britain First type stuff and I'm like "WTF dude?!" (Dude being gender neutral, referring to both male and female here lol)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 17/06/2019 20:38

TBF. It doesn't really matter if chaps meant men or men and women.

People are offended. People don't have a right to not be offended.

And just like qualifications it is impossible to prove sex on here.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:39

You're insinuating that women get referred to being chaps and we're all just imagining it, it's what women are called within friendship groups

But again..never said this

I and a few of my friends have called each other mate, a few say chaps, ive heard guys in a lot of restaurants especially (as i said) and one says ladies....

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:41

Any sensible person reading this will be thinking "wtf?

That's the thought that's keeping my sanity intact lol Grin

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:41

Dude being gender neutral

But its not is it Grin

Dh and i dude all the time...really funny scene in the film “Dude wheres my car’

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:42

LimeKiwi

No you're confused. Mate, chaps and guys can be used to mean men but also, lots of women use them in other contexts.

Mate - is an anagram of "team" so actually mate means "you're on my team. As in one of us. As in a woman"

Guys - cockney rhyming slang for buy, as in buys handbags, which is something women do, so obviously guys means women.

I mean seriously Limekiwi how did you not know this? Clearly mate and guy refers to women.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:43

Clearly mate and guy refers to women

Clearly no one has said that

LimeKiwi · 17/06/2019 20:45

No you're confused. Mate, chaps and guys can be used to mean men but also, lots of women use them in other contexts

Exactly, I mean FFS is it any wonder my head's getting mashed here lol

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:45

Well clearly it makes as much sense as trying to pretend that chaps is used to mean a group of women.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 17/06/2019 20:47

Well clearly it makes as much sense as trying to pretend that chaps is used to mean a group of women

Once again for the cheap seats...no one has said that Grin

DecomposingComposers · 17/06/2019 20:47

Exactly, I mean FFS is it any wonder my head's getting mashed here lol

Maybe your leather trousers are too tight? They cut off the blood supply to your head Grin
