Really disturbing anti science and authoritarian, though I have some sympathy for the brainwashed teacher who is following policy twitter.com/lporiginalg/status/1139572227307794432?s=19

That's shocking. It's such an indefensible position that any non-believer forced into defending it could only descend into bluster.

TheRedBarrows · 15/06/2019 13:42

OK, well if it is a PHSE lesson the teacher should have been able to distinguish the difference between gender and sex, and address gender while acknowledging the scientific biological truth of two sexes.

It is symptomatic of the confusion and double think about all this.

GrumpyCatLives · 15/06/2019 13:54

I wonder why the kid has since deleted everything? Was he threatened?

dancingcamper · 15/06/2019 13:56

I may need to clarify that statement danaphoenix, we aren't allowed to be alone with a child such that no-one can easily see us. For example, all doors have windows, people can look in or walk in at any time.

It's purely for safeguarding the students.

Dervel · 15/06/2019 14:11

I think it is entirely right and proper the teacher was filmed doing this AND that it was shared
on social media. Sure in general principle not filming teachers should be the rule, but when a violation of this scale occurs the posting is a defensive action.

As sympathetic as some people are to the impossible position teachers are being put it is coming perilously close to the “I was just following orders” defence which I am afraid just doesn’t wash.

dancingcamper Oh no I did get you. I wasn’t having a go. I just found it interesting in the context of my sons situation. In the younger years PE lessons would generally be timetabled as a year group due to smaller class sizes. So likely adjacent classes would have been empty too.

Different Country. Different rules. Not knocking teachers either, myself and both DS have had some amazing inspirational and supportive teachers. I just don’t support the “bad apples” they spoil it for everyone.

ButtercupGirI · 15/06/2019 14:42

How does biology being taught these days in school?

Well done young man!

Dervel · 15/06/2019 14:56

I have been deeply concerned for some time that schools are less concerned with teaching children what to think and more in teaching them what to think.

In an academic setting everything should be on the table for discussion. Even triggering and abhorrent ideas in fact especially those.

I’m not sure exactly when we walked into this Orwellian nightmare, but I suspect it was before this current trans agenda exploded into the cultural zeitgeist. I simply think they are the group that are maximising it’s influence currently.

SpeakUpXXWomen · 15/06/2019 15:27

This is the inevitable result.

"I’ve had to sit down with my kids and explain that what they heard is flat-out wrong and incorrect," the parent wrote. "We will be kind to others, but we WILL NOT be involved in adult games of make-believe. Shame on those that support this!"

Frusty · 15/06/2019 15:36

Nickymanchester I’ve often thought parents would benefit from seeing video footage of what their children do in class. But it would be completely unacceptable to covertly film them.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 15/06/2019 21:05

I find it alarming that teachers' - I presume - first reaction to this is to start distracting from the original point of the post.

OK, we get the idea that teachers do not like being filmed. We get the idea that they find that uncomfortable - although many of the rest of us do our jobs under the public eye.

Now let's get back to the point. The point is that teachers are following official lines and telling students that they are only allowed to hold certain opinions as vetted by the establishment. Specifically, the opinion they are told to hold at the moment is that there are more than 2 sexes - allowing for the vocabulary confusion - in defiance of biology, common sense, and general practical usage among humanity for millennia.

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 15/06/2019 21:08

When he talks about national policy, the teacher is almost saying that authority cannot be questioned because it is authority and for no other reason. Is this what teachers think?

Frusty · 15/06/2019 21:53

although many of the rest of us do our jobs under the public eye really, your job involves being videoed without your knowledge and the recording posted on social media?

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 15/06/2019 22:01

No, not that I know of, but it did involve being in the public domain and under the eyes of the general public all the time.

It still sounds like you are distracting. If you like, think of it as two separate issues. Start another thread if you like about whether people should have the right to film others and distribute it on social media, or about social media pros/ cons, there's a lot to be said about that. Now could you please answer my question about whether teachers believe authority should never be questioned because it is authority?

Frusty · 15/06/2019 22:23

It’s a fucking stupid question so no I won’t answer it. Anyone with a brain cell knows teachers don’t have a hive mind anymore than any other group of people does.
The really concerning thing for me about this is not what the pupil did or what the teacher said, but where he was getting the idea that he was putting forward an “official” council policy - who told them this, who trained them etc. One teacher can’t do that much harm but a whole local authority..

DarkAtEndOfTunnel · 15/06/2019 22:33

That’s a good answer actually thanks Smile. It is the potential for systems and organised group think -enforced - that’s the issue.

sparklefarts · 15/06/2019 22:33

Do we know what school this was?

Wineloffa · 15/06/2019 22:59

Well done Murray for standing your ground. The teacher’s refusal to even debate it is terrifying.

In 1994 I was in secondary school in Ireland and the subject of abortion came up in our religion class. I was the only person in the whole class who believed that women should have access to abortions particularly in rape cases or in the case of foetal abnormalities, not compatible with life. I also believed the Catholic Church had no right to control women in this way. The teacher was absolutely horrified (pearl clutching like you’ve never seen it) and told me I was so wrong to think that, it was akin to murdering babies and it was against our religion etc, etc. I got absolutely savaged by a very aggressive boy in the class who screamed ‘murderer’ in my face yet I refused to back down and continued to argue my case.

When the Eighth Amendment was repealed last year, I looked back on that episode with absolute pride. I was 14 at the time.

andyoldlabour · 16/06/2019 14:08

Excellent work Murray, and well done for recording it.
I have no sympathy for the teacher whatsoever, no sympathy for the "following orders" line.
Forcing children to believe in a lie is child abuse. Punishing a child for refusing to believe in lies is further, more serious child abuse.
If Murray had not recorded it, we would never have known this happened.
Murray has made many more people aware of this ridiculous situation.

Cismyfatarse1 · 16/06/2019 15:16

I am a teacher.

This one has a linked in profile "dealing with the bad and the sad" (at least I think this is him - NW PT Guidance). Not a great way to describe pupils (bad) as we tend to try to focus on behaviour, not put it down to character traits (which suggests these cannot be changed).

Also, the school's guidance page is empty (now) - not sure about before. This is odd and suggests they have just removed it.

Why no comment from the Council? Or Head? Surprised really about that.

I also teach in Scotland and much CPD is from external bodies - especially ones that do it for free. The rest is in house / run by the Council.

It would be interesting to find out if this is policy. I feel sorry that the teacher was recorded (we all have bad days) but appalled at his attitude and therefore glad it was recorded as this must shine a light on this type of teaching.
