Really disturbing anti science and authoritarian, though I have some sympathy for the brainwashed teacher who is following policy twitter.com/lporiginalg/status/1139572227307794432?s=19

A competent teacher would know how to handie that situation and diffuse it. I feel sorry a bit that he has been shown to be incompetent I guess.
Is it fuck "abuse" of the teacher!

It's abuse of children to gaslight them with unscientific lies. Children are trained to beleive what adults tell them. It's bloody brave to speak out against what you know to be false. But yes he should have said sex, to be clear

nauticant · 14/06/2019 22:14

Of course, AlwaysComingHome, how could I have missed the parallel to Lindsay Shepherd? There's another example of how the real problem was not that someone was subjected to a gross injustice but that they ended up with a recording of what happened.

It seems that "what actually happened" is now becoming a bad thing. It's better to have "what everyone agreed has happened".

Kilbranan · 14/06/2019 22:19

Well done Murray. Parents have to wake up and realise what schools are teaching their kids - presenting it as fact when it’s really just opinion. This is really shocking to me.
I hope lots of people see this

MrsWooster · 14/06/2019 22:26

I was a teacher until just over a year ago and hated phones in class and would have kicked off dreadfully had I been filmed. If I’d been lying to a kid, I would have deserved it.

Datun · 14/06/2019 22:31

Yes. I would like teacher's opinions on being filmed in class and posted on social media.

I'm sure he's right bloody annoyed.

Too bad.

JackyHolyoake · 14/06/2019 22:34

What is happening here is corruption by government!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 14/06/2019 22:43

Students filming teachers in class is a widespread problem. Schools have phone policies in place in part to prevent this as there have been lots of cases of abuse.

If you asked teachers "do you think your students should be allowed to film you and put the videos on social media" I suspect most would say no.

That's with no context.

When does whistleblowing over-ride privacy concerns? In this case - would it have been possible for the teacher's identity to be hidden? If the teacher had agreed, on film, with the student - could he have lost his job?

AnthonyCrowley · 14/06/2019 22:47

Murray was fab, really calm and not for swaying.

Teacher was an idiot. Even if he genuinely disagreed with Murray all he needed to say was something like "we're not discussing this, we're moving on". Kicking him out the class is bonkers.

LangCleg · 14/06/2019 22:53

Go Murray!

Coyoacan · 14/06/2019 22:57

Maybe the teacher was having a bad day and didn't handle this right, but if Murray hadn't filmed it, nobody would believe him.

I understand that being a teacher is a hard job and I admire good teachers tremendously. But too many teachers are mediocre and children are forced to go to school, sit in their classes and receive their punishments in a way that only prisoners and slaves have to put up with in the adult world.

olderthanyouthink · 14/06/2019 23:05

I have been on MN for ages and I wish I was still at school but with my current confidence, I'd have a field day with this.

Filling out mock exams with lies and identifying as male and siting next to my female friends (had to sit boy-girl) would be fun

RedToothBrush · 14/06/2019 23:07

I see the filming in the same vein as 'in the public interest' for newspaper publication.

Filming teachers is a no no. Unless something is happening that is in the interests of whistle blowing and public interest.

Thus I also see comments attacking Murray for filming in this context of being a whistle-blower.

It is true we do not know the whole story with this case. However it raises so bloody big questions about human rights - and freedom of thought is a human right. Without the video there is no way we could ask further questions as to context as the kid would simply be called a liar because he is the one without the power in this dynamic.

It could have a backstory which isn't so nice, but this still does not mean we should be gaslighting kids in this way. They have a right to reality.

Lysistra65 · 14/06/2019 23:14

Massively worrying that kids in Scotland are not allowed to speak the truth! There ARE only 2 sexes. The emperor has no clothes.

celtiethree · 14/06/2019 23:25

And let’s not forget that this is a Scottish School there is very limited scope to stand up against the system. There are no school governors the best you can hope for is an effective parent council. The reality is that the government at both a national and local level drive the agenda. Without whistleblowers nothing would make it out into public consciousness.

Do other Scottish mumsnetters remember the ‘Named Person’ scheme that would have assigned a state guardian for every child? The full roll out of the legislation was only stopped by the Supreme Court. The designated guardian would have overseen the well-being and happiness of every child including their ‘responsibilities’ which encompassed ‘saying sorry when they were wrong’ & ‘The people who work with your child will check that they are responsible’. Imagine how that would have played out in this scenario.

PierreBezukov · 14/06/2019 23:29

This is terrifying. It's not ethical to secretly film a teacher, no, but the public interest outweighs it in this case. What is going on in Scotland? Who are impersonal, Big brother-esque -sounding 'the authorities'?

BlackeyedGruesome · 15/06/2019 00:57

teacher has painted himself into a corner. it is easy to do when stressed and trying to implement stuff that is new/unfamiliar.

teacher should have done what others up the thread have written and diffused the situation before it became a stand off. You ain't going to win against a teen in a head to head. you may think you have compliance but they are still going to believe what they believe and be fucked off with you for a very long time.

we do not have what happened in the classsroom. That would be really interesting.

MangoesAreMyFavourite · 15/06/2019 01:52

Bad Murray.... no biscuit.
Off to the gulag you go.

How many fingers? 🖕

WombOfOnesOwn · 15/06/2019 02:05

Funny, I don't remember any of the usual suspects saying there was a problem with recording when the trans student recorded teachers trying to tell them to leave the girls' bathroom.

Bloomerpool · 15/06/2019 02:58

Milgram experiment. It's not just female socialization, patriarchy, and bullying operating on the individual level, it's conformity to authority feeding this beast. This is always an issue that has to be analyzed and contended when pressing for cultural change. It's incredibly concerning that gender ideology has been institutionalized to this extent before the opposition has had a chance to get its boots on.

I'm a teacher and I thank goodness the issue has not come up in my (thankfully non-traditional) classroom or I'd probably be fired.

JQBased · 15/06/2019 03:18

You will comply! Grin
Student was probably sent on some form of clockwork orange brainwashing treatment following this

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 15/06/2019 05:58

It was a PSHE lesson and the teacher brought it up unprompted complaining that there were only 'male' and 'female' options for a website sign-up.

You know instead of the alternatives like 'fucking idiot'

Cwenthryth · 15/06/2019 07:18

How do you know Shoots? On Twitter there was a suggestion of which school it is but no confirmation.

MockerstheFeManist · 15/06/2019 07:32

More or less what happened to be forty years ago when I used the phrase "This god of yours" in a compulsory RE lesson.

(At a non-church comprehensive.)

GurlwiththeCurl · 15/06/2019 07:46

I never use reddit so have no idea how it works, but I saw this link on FB which gives more information and background:

Outofinspiration · 15/06/2019 07:47

I'm totally with Murray, but I'm another who is very uncomfortable with this being filmed and circulated on social media. And I'm pretty sure if it was the other was around and the pupil was filming the teacher saying there are only two sexes, people would be up in arms about the filming of a teacher.
