Do it has just been suggested on Twitter that Canada needs a Mumsnet, I have tweeted that Canada is welcome to join so I thought we could hold a small welcome gathering.

@MNHQ - I hope that's OK

Welcome!

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/06/2019 09:43

i love Canada. I spent most of my childhood wanting to be Canadian thanks to Anne of Green Gables. Welcome Canada! (what's Prince Edward Island like?)

usernamepinched · 14/06/2019 09:45

Welcome Canada! Come in, pull up a chair and let's be hearing all about yourself.

AncientLights · 14/06/2019 10:09

Good morning Canada! I've visited the Niagra Falls - truly awesome. I hope lots of you join us here. We are quite fond of gin, you'll find.

NChat · 14/06/2019 12:32

This might be a good place to throw some links.

www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p3Var.pl?Function=DEC&Id=410445
"GC" = Government of Canada ONS equivalent.

"Sex and gender refer to two different concepts. Caution should be exercised when comparing counts for sex with those for gender. For example, female sex is not the same as female gender. "

There is a bunch of AFAB and C*s language too. But at least the statisticians have some attempt at definition.

When I've looked through for now a lot of the stats say gender as a headline, but sex on the actual survey so I'm not sure how well that works in practice.

Status of Women Canada (now the Department for Women and Gender Equality as of this year) also had clear definitions. I'm pretty sure they were more straightforward when I first looked a year or so ago, but now include assigned at birth type language.

Similar to the UK law, I still don't understand how, "The law amends the Canadian Human Rights Act by adding "gender identity or expression" as a prohibited ground of discrimination. ... A person who denies benefits because of the gender identity or gender expression of another person could be liable to provide monetary reimbursement." Means that humans can change sex.

Is anyone aware of any EA type law in Canada regarding the proportionate discrimination on some grounds?

I will be interested to see where the Human rights court cases go, when/if any make it to court.

That really dried up the jolly tone, sorry!

Go Raptors?

managedmis · 14/06/2019 12:33

I'm in Canada and I'm on MN.

I'll spread the word

FlapsMagazine · 14/06/2019 12:52

Welcome Canada, your contribution to World Wrestling Entertainment is admirable and much appreciated.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 14/06/2019 13:25

Canada I am so grateful for your contribution of maple syrup to the world!

Mumfun · 14/06/2019 13:34

Welcome Canada. We are very happy with your Feminist Current and Meghan Murphy!

OvertheInfluence · 14/06/2019 13:34

Welcome Canada, thanks for being the location of so many of my favourite series over the years. Including, but not limited to:
Orphan Black
Stargate
X Files
Supernatural
Due South
Battlestar Galactica

Goosefoot · 14/06/2019 13:36

I'm also in Canada. It would be nice to have more Canadian participation here, there is really no place now for people to connect.

FeministCat · 14/06/2019 13:39

I have already infiltrated but I have been doing my best to spread the word to others Wink

AprilHalley709 · 14/06/2019 13:44

Thank you all! Canada is a mess and most Canadians don't have a clue. Need to change that before the next election in October.

As of January the police are recording gender identity and not sex!

I may have to escape into the woods. Luckily we have a lot here.

Goosefoot · 14/06/2019 14:03

As of January the police are recording gender identity and not sex!

Where is that?

One of the tricky elements for Canada is that a lot of this kind of thing is provincial. So you have 10 or 12 different governments making rulings on anything that is controlled at the provincial level.

AprilHalley709 · 14/06/2019 14:13

It hasn't been announced! I found out by emailing Statistics Canada. It is completely insane. Data from the police is used to create the Universal Crime Reporting Survey. The UCR is vital for researchers. They have invalidated the data and no one knows.

Manderleyagain · 14/06/2019 15:07

Is there anything in Canada like wolf or wpuk /fpfw and the other UK groups? I know Megan Murphy has spoken in public but is there a campaigning organisation?

colbyandmontysmum · 14/06/2019 15:29

I'm also Canadian but don't understand how Canada is a mess? I worry we might go the way of the United States and vote in a Prime Minister who would try to be a mini Trump. They did something similar to that in Ontario and they now seem very unhappy.

To the PP who asked about Prince Edward Island - it is unbelievably beautiful with the friendliest people!

NoNever · 14/06/2019 15:43

I'm Canadian, in Ontario. Thanks for the welcome. I joined some time ago, after seeing a link on twitter, but haven't really participated.

I agree Canada is a mess when it comes to GC issues. I don't think the impact on females is given the slightest consideration with regards to self-id and allowing males into female safe spaces, sports, etc..

But I'm with colbyandmontysmum that I definitely don't want Sheer to win in October. Ford has not done Ontario any favours. I was shocked and embarrassed when he won.

BorisBadunov · 14/06/2019 15:50

I’m a long time MNer and name changer, and I’m both Canadian and British (though I now live in a different country).

Welcome Canada!

I won’t comment on trans issues as I don’t know enough about current laws (though I’m aware of/disgusted by the Jonathan issue in BC and Lactatia in Montreal).

One thing I would say is that in my experience, sexism is expressed differently in Canada and the UK. This is partly to do with the class system (there isn’t one) and the fact that it is much more the norm for Canadian women to have professional aspirations after having kids.

Overall, I think white women have it better in Canada than the UK.

A lot of WR attention in Canada is rightly on the appalling treatment of First Nations women and Muslim women. And as has been said by a PP, different provinces have different issues and challenges- it’s definitely not a homogeneous society.

None of my Canadian friends seem bothered by the trans debate.

Again this is only based on my own experience of living and working in both countries.

StopThePlanet · 14/06/2019 15:53

Welcome Canadian neighbors! Grin MNFWR is becoming a more global community every day it seems - a beautiful thing!

AprilHalley709 · 14/06/2019 15:55

Canada is an absolute mess:

Men are being housed in women's prisons. Including extremely violent men and sex offenders.

The media is not reporting on this issue honestly. The CBC is acting as a total propagandist. I am shocked by this.

All women's orgs are either silent or complicit. The Elizabeth Fry Society (EFS) just voted to create a trans inclusive policy. They listened to recently incarcerated women spreak against it. One of these women had been harassed in prison by Matther Harks. Harks is an incredibly disturbed man and serial pedophile. He is currently at the Grand Valley Institution for Women. The EFS has abandoned these women.

Statistics Canada is destroying the validity of data. Crime is no longer being reported by sex. That is an absolute disgrace. That alone is enough to take down Trudeau. He should step down.

I am no fan of the Conservatives. They have also failed in their role as opposition but Trudeau has to go. He personally forced federal corrections to override ther policy and allow transfers into federal prisons on the basis of self ID.

Bill C-16 does not automatically override women's rights. A major problem here is it is not being legally challenged. I believe this has a lot to do with the fact that orgs like the Canadian Bar Association have actively pushed for this madness. There is serious corruption here.

BorisBadunov · 14/06/2019 16:14

April, I’m not a fan of Trudeau either, but under Harper the Conservatives wanted to get rid of the census altogether - how is that a better alternative?

colbyandmontysmum · 14/06/2019 16:26

I'm very disappointed with Trudeau as well but the alternative could be devastating. Scheer has already stated he's not pro-choice and a lot of his people are pro-life. And his participation in the yellow vest protest should open a lot of eyes as to what his anti-immigration beliefs are.

Spryfield · 14/06/2019 16:37

I'm in Nova Scotia. We have a loose motley crew of radical feminists here; nothing formally organized as of yet.

There's a group in BC called West Coast Womyn. (And I recently saw a message about some rad lesbians starting to get together in Toronto.) But it's mostly informal social networks.

Our organizations have been decimated by gender ideology. Many folks have heard of the years of attacks on Vancouver Rape Relief, which has been the only org to stand their ground, but don't know about the Vancouver Lesbian Connection case.

www.canlii.org/en/bc/bchrt/doc/1999/1999bchrt51/1999bchrt51.html

This person basically sued a lesbian organization out of existence, after being kicked out for being an aggressive violater of boundaries. (Took to living at the centre, directing personal mail there, inventing a job for self, etc.) They were fined for discrimination and dissolved (or went underground?)

Human Rights tribunals/commissions, plus activists in academia, have made a clear agenda of changing the law here to be on the side of gender and not sex.

Women's Centres have all become "Gender Centres".

Here on the East Coast, cities are incredibly small. There is a degree and a half of separation between everyone who lives here. So if you're involved in any progressive org or political party, there is inevitable overlap with other progressive causes. It's a small social circle, with quite a few trans folks. No one wants to be mean; virtue signalling is popular. So even if the legal threat wasn't an issue, it's social suicide to speak out.

One woman in Nova Scotia was kicked out of the New Democratic Party (the Left/Labour party in Canada) for her views on gender. She held no positions within the party, was just an ordinary member. They put her through a sort of witch trial of social media screenshots. She has become a social pariah, threatened with violence if she shows up to events, asked to leave a cafe, and people who remain friends with her are harassed and/or shunned.

Their harassment is going to backfire, though. The worse they get, the more I want to fight back.

We need to start getting organized.

AprilHalley709 · 14/06/2019 16:44

Sheer has said that he would not open the abortion debate. The Conservatives know that this issue drags them down. Harper was PM for 10 years and they did not try and open this. I wish there was a viable NDP option.

Everyone critical of the Liberals immigration plan is not a racist. That is propaganda. The Liberals have signed Canada onto the UN Migration Compact. I oppose this not because I am anti immigration but because it is anti-democratic. We should determine our own policies.

People are not thinking critically. As long as something is advertised as good people assume it is. Now we have rapists in women's prisons.
