Do it has just been suggested on Twitter that Canada needs a Mumsnet, I have tweeted that Canada is welcome to join so I thought we could hold a small welcome gathering.

@MNHQ - I hope that's OK

BorisBadunov I am no fan of Harper. He got rid of the long form census. The media flipped out. Nothing could display the media bias more than the fact that the Liberals are destroying data and no one is reporting it. The head of stats can resigned a couple of years ago because of government interference.

I have no faith in any party. I would like women to run as independents. We are half the electorate and it's crazy that they can trample us like this and take our continued support for granted.

QueSera · 14/06/2019 18:00

Welcome fellow Canucks, and non-Canucks!
I grew up in Canada but have lived in the UK for quite a while now.
Great to have a little corner of Canada here on Mumsnet x

S1naidSucks · 14/06/2019 18:07

Welcome Canada. Make sure you bring a brolly, ☔️ when you call by.

I had no idea just how bad things had gotten in Canada and I think it’s really important that you share these articles and information with us, because we need the silly little woke people to see where this is heading.

JamB4cream · 14/06/2019 18:11

Welcome Canada!

Sending appreciation of your beautiful trees, mountains, rivers, lakes & vistas

happydappy2 · 14/06/2019 18:16

Welcome Canada-please keep us in the loop, as to the craziness happening with you. I do think if you organise a group like FPFW, you could spread the truth of what is happening.

Goosefoot · 14/06/2019 20:01

Spryfield

I'm in NS as well. Maybe the other side of the harbour from you though.

Goosefoot · 14/06/2019 20:18

I agree with posters who say it is bad in Canada, but also that it looks different. In general we are a reserved people but also laid-back, and I don't think it comes very naturally to most to challenge what seems like personal weirdness.
Here on the east coast rural areas for example are traditionally pretty small c conservative, but the people also tend to take people very much as they are and carry on about their own business. It's very nice in many ways but it doesn't always make us quick to react to problems that arise.
We really are not well served politically at the moment. Trudeau is in my opinion not bright, not reliable, and perhaps worst of all seems to believe that his vision of what constitutes Canadian values is definitive. His party as a whole are neoliberals pushing corporate globalism, much like New Labour.
Sheer is scary because he is also dumb and he is beholden to Alberta's American type conservatives. I couldn't vote for him because of his environmental beliefs.
The NDP - well, they are just Liberal-light.
I've voted Green in recent elections, but their platform on gender issues isn't great.

Goosefoot · 14/06/2019 20:21

Everyone critical of the Liberals immigration plan is not a racist.

Even as far as it goes, they use this issue like others for the photo ops but have very little real commitment when it comes down to brass tacks. I've been involved in refugee resettlement and they are less than helpful when it doesn't mean a mass movement of refugees who happen to be in the news at a given time.

I’m from Nova Scotia, now living in Ontario but visit NS a couple times a year. Lots of women in Canada seem to take their safety for granted, but they don’t realize it is because of the work of women fighting for single sex spaces that they have the privilege to feel so safe. The further this goes on, the worse it’s going to get as more and males become brazen enough to test out going in women’s spaces, applying for women’s only scholarships etc.

Bluenoser · 14/06/2019 22:24

I’m most concerned about women that have no options, the most vulnerable, and children being led into a life of surgeries and hormones. Women in prisons and shelters, women in the military, women and girls in hospitals or intimate care situations.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 14/06/2019 22:26

Welcome Canada. I love your Maple Taffy, Poutine and world class skiing.

AprilHalley709 · 15/06/2019 03:06

Yes Bluenoser, it is the most vulnerable women who are the most at risk.

Brazen is the perfect word to use. We are essentially allowing a social experiment to take place in prisons at the expense of these women.

I am trying to find out how many men are currently in women's prisons. That is challenging because some areas are only recording self declared sex.

According to Correctional Services Canada (federal prisons) men who have a penis are labeled male (even if allowed in a women's prison) while men who have said bon voyage to their penis are labeled as female.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/06/2019 03:47

I’m a British Expat. Canadian citizen since late 2015. Living in Alberta. This area is strongly Conservative.

I’m not a Trudeau fan. Still getting to grips with Federal politics. And Provincial.

Recent turnout in the provincial election was 64%. As high as 80% at some ridings.

notathing · 15/06/2019 04:56

Heard about this thread (good news travels fast lol). I'm fascinated by this site but thought it was just for UK moms. I'm in Ontario (though born in the UK)

Very jealous of the momentum you have going in the UK. I feel like we are slooooooowly waking up to the madness here

(and yes - everything you've heard about Prince Edward Island is true)

50shadesofgreyrock · 15/06/2019 05:20

There are loads of us on mn Grin
Always have been. Although the original ‘I am Canadian’ FWR poster has been gone a while, I think.

50shadesofgreyrock · 15/06/2019 05:21

Moose, we had snow on Friday Grin fecking June.

Slacksandblouse · 15/06/2019 05:27

Coming in to say “hi” from Canada. Not my home but living here. I’ve lived a few places so not sure what is home anymore, maybe it will be Canada. Who knows? I’m still figuring that out. What has happened re the debate anyway? have I missed something?

Slacksandblouse · 15/06/2019 05:32

Oh just read that gender statement. Yeah not surprised you know cannabis is legal here too. I thought it was a gateway to many drugs but it’s not thought to be here so you can grow your own plants do what you like. So not surprised by the “gender person”. Whatever anyone wants goes really. It seems far less political here. You don’t hear much about this stuff as you do in the UK. I think most people either don’t know or aren’t bothered by changes like this or anything. It’s very relaxed and I’ve noticed in meetings too if the floor is open to questions no one really asks anything. It’s taking some time to get used to.

Winterlife · 15/06/2019 06:12

I’m Canadian and Albertan. I disagree with the pp who stated Alberta conservatives are like Americans. They most definitely are not.

I don’t know much about the trans movement. I am 58 and a professional. For the most part, I faced discrimination as a professional woman but it wasn’t horrific. But it was there early in my career.

I will vote Conservative, although I’m not enamored with them. I don’t think the Liberals have had good implementation of policies and I think Trudeau is a virtue signalling dope.

NeurotrashWarrior · 15/06/2019 06:51

Welcome Canada!

We went over to Toronto for a wedding and I had a great time chatting about how similar things like tv culture was to the UK - people were at pains to make a distinction between themselves and the US!

AncientLights · 15/06/2019 08:27

Moose so you have ridings over there, like we do in Yorkshire? I hope to learn a lot from our Canadian sisters- includes men in the term as there are men here too.

Do you think your Canadian laid back ways might be a problem? Most of us started off by thinking live & let live etc then we saw where this thing can lead us.

notathing · 15/06/2019 17:17

Yes we have ridings (for both federal and provincial elections); our system of government is quite similar, since it's based on the Westminster system , with the Queen as our Head of State (represented by the Governor General). We're a federation though (not a devolved state); we have a prime minister and each province has a premier.

I absolutely think in this instance, our laid back ways are a problem. I wasn't paying attention to any of this a few years ago, and just assumed laws, policies etc would be reasonable and fair to everyone

AprilHalley709 · 15/06/2019 18:14

Yee are completely right. Being laid back and trusting of the government and media is precisely why this has been allowed to happen.

People just don't know. My MP's office was adamant that I was wrong about male sex offenders in women's prisons.

Terfnserf · 15/06/2019 19:38

Hello and thanks for all the maple syrup and Cardinal, my current favourite detective

Manderleyagain · 15/06/2019 19:48

April. Were you able to give them evidence and did they acknowledge it in the end?
