It's unclear whether the talent and celebrity department didn't follow nspcc safeguarding guidelines, or there isn't any guidelines to follow.

The language used by the T&C officer illustrates clearly the absolute disconnect between frontline children's services concerned with Safeguarding/Child Protection & the publicity/fundraising/corporate side which is indistinguishable from any other large business.

littlbrowndog · 11/06/2019 18:45

The inde site is hellish.

Just keeps reloading 🤦‍♀️

NoSquirrels · 11/06/2019 18:49

It’s amazing that they keep referring to Helen’s thread analysis as “Twitter user Helen” not “head of children’s campaigning transgender charity Mermaids”.

Are we supposed to believe that Helen threw up the research and the graphs herself?

I'm really concerned over the blatant disregard for safe guarding and due diligence. It's almost as though they don't give a toss about vulnerable children.

As for taking the word of some like mimmymum or whatever her name is...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 19:21

Minnymum? Sounds about right.

LangCleg · 11/06/2019 19:28

I can just about get my head around defending Bergdorf on the Playboy modelling and general sexualised presentation. Only just about, mind.

But the previous sackings/resignings for racist and homophobic remarks? The insouciance at the doxxing of the children of feminists? The approbation for the autistic boy performing drag in front of gay men throwing money? And, most of all, the invitations to minors for private contact?

The vast majority of our fourth estate, especially the state broadcaster, sticking their fingers in their ears and going la-la-la at this list? A list that clearly demonstrates complete unsuitability for any role with even the slightest connection to child protection?

I keep thinking I cannot be shocked further.

Then I am.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 11/06/2019 19:29

I didn’t realise that little boy who is a drag artist is autistic. That breaks my heart.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 19:30

Maybe they have a good PR. I mean, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Fa-ucking-rage... all absolute numpties but Teflon Coated to their starry eyed followers.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 11/06/2019 19:30

Part of the problem is that having job titles such as 'Talent and Celebrity Officer' encourages the idea that the best person for the role is the biggest celebrity, rather than the most appropriate and qualified person.

SunsetBeetch · 11/06/2019 19:32

Finding it pretty hilarious that Mimmymum's version of events is being taken as gospel, when it's incredibly wasy to disprove:

"1/2

Ok, I do have something to say on Mimmymum's ridiculous thread. And that's her claim that the complaint was started by Safe Schools Alliance and 'quickly amplified by Janice Tuner'.

And that is TIMESTAMPS:

SSA tweet 07/06/19 19:14

Janice Turner's tweet: 06/06/19 19:36 "

twitter.com/underhandrea/status/1138141518403919872?s=19

"2/2

The earliest tweet on this issue I could find was this one, posted 06/06/19 08:10

There were many more raising concerns before either SSA or Janice Turner posted about it."

twitter.com/underhandrea/status/1138142127513317376?s=19

Maybe if someone put it in a pretty infographic?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 19:33

Well Big business charities aren’t exactly bastions of common sense and decency are they - cough (Oxfam, stonewall) cough.

LangCleg · 11/06/2019 19:35

Has everyone seen this?

I. Have. No. Words.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 11/06/2019 19:35

It’s like because she’s black and trans she’s not to be criticised and must not be let go from a job that they never had.

Teachable moment? Yes, they should never have worked with Munroe at all.

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 11/06/2019 19:38

Has everyone seen this?

That's nearly 150 people who have demonstrated that they are not suitable to hold the positions they have.

What is the NSPCC going to do about that?

SunsetBeetch · 11/06/2019 19:40

Jesus wept. Co-written by LOJ, of course.

R0wantrees · 11/06/2019 19:44

from Guardian article above:

(extract)
"But in a letter seen by the Guardian, nearly 150 members of the charity’s staff spoke of their “embarrassment and shame” and condemned the decision “to cut ties with Munroe Bergdorf, a black trans woman, as a Childline campaigner.”

They wrote: “We are deeply disappointed about the treatment of Munroe by the organisation. In particular, we are concerned at the NSPCC’s decision to replicate the experience that many trans children and adults experience in being subjected to abuse and ridicule and subsequently abandoned.”

The employees – said to be working in a “sombre” atmosphere after the decision – said they were alarmed that the statement provided by the NSPCC failed to articulate the reasons for the move and to “express solidarity with Munroe in the face of significant online abuse”.

They went on: “Overall, there is a feeling of embarrassment and shame about how this has been handled and what it means to be an employee of the NSPCC.”

The charity had faced criticism from some on social media for working with Bergdorf, including from an account called Safe Schools Alliance UK, which was formed in May, and from the Times columnist Janice Turner. The Safe Schools Alliance account said Bergdorf had invited children to get in touch with her directly on social media and was “supportive of children dressing as ‘drag queens’”. (continues)

Helen's twitter analysis is nonsense. It's not even an analysis, it's just a rant, about a single twitter account, with ridiculous venn diagrams.

For a start, following the Samaritans on twitter is not the single best signifier that someone cares about, or is concerned about suicide. Not following Ofsted on twitter is not a signifier than one is not interested in the education of children. Reminds me of Ash Sarkar doing a twitter search on Julie Bindel and a woman prisoner's name, and concluding that Julie does no work for women prisoners because that particular name didn't come up. What a joke.

Secondly, I imagine lots of us, did used to follow NSPCC and donate to them - until they refused to come on Mumsnet and answer honest parenting concerns about safeguarding. I know I did - I cancelled my monthly DD after this.

Thirdly, Helen sued a transsexual called Miranda Yardley, and dragged Miranda through "10 months of hell" - before making an utter fool of herself in court, and having the case thrown out.

None of us, nor Transgender Trend, to my knowledge, have dragged any trans people into court - so that, in my book, puts us one notch above Helen Wink

R0wantrees · 11/06/2019 19:47

That's nearly 150 people who have demonstrated that they are not suitable to hold the positions they have.

What is the NSPCC going to do about that?

It depends on their role.
It identifies some serious training needs though & if they are involved with frontline services, especially Childline, then its concerning.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/06/2019 19:47

Court will come...

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 11/06/2019 19:54

Safe Schools Alliance is just a Twitter account, not a recognised or registered organisation or charity – and @ mimmymum provides more examples of similar accounts with names such as “Woman’s Place UK” and “Fair Play for Women”, set up purely to further anti-trans agendas.

So SSA is:

  • set up really recently (so what?)
  • just a twitter account (so what?)
  • not a registered charity (they never claim to be)

vs

WPUK/ FPFW which:

  • were set up years ago
  • hold numerous real world events
  • have won awards for their services to feminism

Yup, suuuuper similar accounts, defs just set up as fronts to harass MB.

here is the WPUK manifesto - the word trans doesn't appear at all, not once, let alone as part of an anti trans agenda!

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 11/06/2019 19:56

Not knocking the SSA btw, loved your letter, but it's not exactly a coherent comparison!

ZebrasAreBras · 11/06/2019 19:57

Bergdorf has just been on BBC London News - the most sycophantic interview.

So much for 'balance' BBC - it's bloody obvious that there are several reasons why Bergdorf is an inappropriate choice for a children's charity - and none of them are "transphobia".

Bergdorf has already been fired from L'Oriel, Labour party - why so much fuss this time? Surely a children's charity should be more discerning, not less.

R0wantrees · 11/06/2019 19:58

See also Object! article by HANNAH HARRISON identifies very serious concerns about the risks to children and young people by failures in safeguarding frameworks within the trans / Queer community.

www.objectnow.org/news/2019/1/15/trans-kids-paedophilia-in-drag?

Munroe Bergdorf has demonstrated that they do not understand Safeguarding or parenting which centres the needs of the child.

An adult may feel offended when others who do understand safeguarding risks address such a failure but this should never take priority over the concerns for children & vulnerable adults' safety.

(the adult's sex and gender identity is irrelevent)
