Seriously Procter & Gamble? Is this a joke?

At first I thought I had no issue with this until I read "[a] hair care partnership was the obvious choice, she
[Lees] said: it was a key signifier that she was female when she was going through her transition as a teen."

barelove · 05/06/2019 18:35

but I didn’t realize that it would become aspirational, that we’d be winning awards

Yep. Women’s awards, meant for adult human females. Sad

dancingcamper · 05/06/2019 18:42

I think I must be a bit thick, I can't work out why shampoo is a signifier of femininity. Surely men use shampoo too? Or did I just imagine that both men and women wash their hair?

Treefloof · 05/06/2019 18:43

This particular shampoo is a signifier of female ness.
Jeez you cant make this shit up.
Will no longer buy pantene. I think with hundreds of other shampoos out there I will manage to have my female beautiful shiny pretty hair 🙄

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 05/06/2019 18:48

This is fine. To complain about the appointment does look a bit off. I am fully supportive of Paris Lees having a successful career. If Pantene thinks that Paris Lees is a good selection for their customer base that’s fine. This doesn’t detract from women’s rights. Everyone has the right to gainful employment.

If they had chosen a long haired man would you complain or boycott them?

Hoppinggreen · 05/06/2019 18:49

Bit that jumps out for me is that being Trans is “aspirational”
Something to aim for kids !!

Outofinspiration · 05/06/2019 18:51

I have no problem in itself with a transwomen being used to advertise shampoo. However this:

A hair care partnership was the obvious choice, she said: it was a key signifier that she was female when she was going through her transition as a teen.

“It’s not the only thing, but it such a powerful expression of femininity,” she said.

Utter horseshit. What does Paris mean by 'a powerful expression of feminity'? Is she talking about having long flowing locks? Are women who have short hair not 'feminine'? It's just such stereotypical bollocks.

Tbf, Pantene is pretty shit anyway.

GrumpyGran8 · 05/06/2019 18:57

It would have been nice if Pantene had chosen an actual woman, especially someone who has campaigned for women. But no, they're just jumping on the "We're inclusive!" bandwagon, along with Gillette.
I'll give it six months.

Hoppinggreen · 05/06/2019 18:57

Like outofinspiration I don’t have an issue with a Transwoman, Transman or actual man advertising hair products as long as they have the necessary attributes ( ie nice hair, mind you Cheryl Cole used hairpieces allegedly) BUT it’s the co - opting of a women’s event by someone born Male I object to and a (former) man lecturing women on femininity
Plus gushing about how being Trans is “aspirational”

Barracker · 05/06/2019 18:57

Yes, a criminal past in one's youth shouldn't mean no future. How interesting that as a young boy, Lees considered there to be an association with long hair and being female, and that played a factor in 'transitioning'. Some would call that a cultural expectation specific to a society and era, rather than a reason to think one is innately female.

I'm sure I've heard other fascinating quotes attributed to Paris Lees. I wonder if others have any to hand. I'm sure women would like to better understand the thoughts of Paris on what women are and want, other than long hair, of course.

Anyone?

MenstruatorExtraordinaire · 05/06/2019 19:00

When I watched The Island I thought Lees had terrible fine limp hair. Wouldn't be the first person I would choose if I wanted to advertise shampoo.

StarJasmine · 05/06/2019 19:01

Obviously long flowing hair is a powerful expression of femininity!

Paris Lees and Pantene?
Outofinspiration · 05/06/2019 19:01

All of Pantene's campaigns so far have featured women.

Outofinspiration · 05/06/2019 19:03

@StarJasmine any excuse to post a picture of him eh? Wink

jennymanara · 05/06/2019 19:09

Brands choose people to represent them who their target market see as aspirational. Pantene to me seems a pretty old fashioned product, so someone like Paris makes sense if they are trying to appeal to a much younger market.
It is a risk though as Paris has said lots of stupid things in the past, and could say something that will scupper the marketing.

Outofinspiration · 05/06/2019 19:13

Paris is way too savvy for that these days and knows which side their bread is buttered. There is no way they will risk what happened to Munroe Bergdorf, so Paris definitely will be keeping schtum about how Paris loves being treated 'like a piece of meat' and how they find catcalling sexy.

NotTerfNorCis · 05/06/2019 19:14

Mind you, I know a young transwoman who is heavily into all the online stuff, the groups and videos etc, and who knows a surprising number of young transmen, but this person had never heard of Paris Lees. So Lees isn't that trendy.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 05/06/2019 19:14

Lees believes in extreme gender ideology, they describe themselves as an adult human female. it's like Pantene employing a fundamentalist Christian as a brand ambassador. their choice of course, but why would you want your brand associated with someone with seriously weird views?

LassOfFyvie · 05/06/2019 19:15

It's still not enough for me to think Pantene is a shampoo and not a sanitary towel.

jennymanara · 05/06/2019 19:15

Okay maybe I am wrong about how well known Paris is to young people.

AncientLights · 05/06/2019 19:17

Pantene crossed off my shopping list.

jennymanara · 05/06/2019 19:17

Pantene is a cheap shampoo. Just googling this, it has got a fair bit of press. So probably worth it for Pantene for that alone.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 05/06/2019 19:17

in australia they pronounce it pan TEEN

Ereshkigal · 05/06/2019 19:37

When this is promoted online I imagine Paris's memory will be jogged in the comments/tweets. Everything lasts forever on the internet.

jennymanara · 05/06/2019 19:39

Yes I am sure they will. Paris has said so many anti feminist things. But I suspect the people pantene is aiming at, will be pretty forgiving of "gaffes" online.
