Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Can we start an anti "nail" campaign?

As a GP who frequently washes her hands, allotment owner and instrument player I really hate the trend for women to have immaculate nails that cost a fortune, scratch people and mean women can't do anything useful. Where t f did this horrible trend come from and how do we give women back the use of their wonderful hands?

U OK hun?

LimeKiwi · 03/06/2019 19:46

That was aimed at the utterly bizarre rant from placemats not decomposing by the way lol

Holdthedamndoor · 03/06/2019 19:47

So no, the patriarchy is not an excuse for people being vile to each other. But it is an explanation. It’s more complicated than “women are bitchy"

No one said women are bitchy. Some women are nasty. It's been shown on this thread. Patriachy is not the explanation. Nastiness is the explanation. Do you really think this wouldnt happen in a matriachy? Peace to all men and all that?

If you are not nasty, does it mean you managed to avoid the any influence of the patriachy? It just passed you by?

They are always thinking up new things for us to conform to- the most recent appears to be something you can take to make your vagina taste nicer.....words fail me at this point.

This sort of thing freaks me out. However you are aware they have been drops for men to take to make their semen taste better, for years? That also freaks me out. Just weird.

Also a woman can understand some of her choices are influenced by society and expectations. But they can also still make their choices for themseleves. They are as much making the choice for themseleves as the women who dont do it.

And again, the patriachy or social gender constructs wasnt the ops point.

The ops point was that long nails hold women back and that women have lost their hands. She wants a campaign to stop the trend, essentially end the practise because some jobs dont have them.

The fact that she thinks a woman would give up her passion or shy away from a career she really wants because of her long nails, is doing women a disservice. What does it say about how, the OP and her supporters, assume women think?

This thread isnt about gender, patriarchy or anything else. It's an opportunity for the OP to bitch about women who like something she doesnt. This sort of person, would do this sort if stuff in any society.

Exactly. And sadly quite a few others joined in too. The fact that at least 2 of them are doctors actually makes me question how they view female patients that don't meet with their approval.

Surely it can move on? That was all a bit dull- the later stages are a bit more interesting.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 03/06/2019 19:57

This thread isnt about gender, patriarchy or anything else.

It was moving that way though, and tbh I found that side of the discussion interesting and worthy of talking it out , even if it made me look like I jumped ship.

And despite there still being arguments, it's a bit sad that one poster's (weird and targeted) return made us go back right at the beginning of this thread, which was unhelpful and offensive.

minou123 · 03/06/2019 20:00

Also a women can understand some of her choices are influenced by society and expectations. But they can also still make thier choices for themselves.

Thank you for making this point. I was trying to say the same thing, but I couldn't find the right words to say it.

placemats · 03/06/2019 20:00

I think you need medical help.

Oh Joesepheeene

Your words say to me you care deeply. About me. Should I see a psychiatrist? How much would that cost me?

DecomposingComposers · 03/06/2019 20:02

How come on other threads, picking up a new point heralds shouts of derailing and demands that the discussion adheres tightly to the OP, yet here, because the OP and certain other posts don't show certain posters in a good light we should move the discussion on?

I thought the whole point was to stick to the OP?

LimeKiwi · 03/06/2019 20:03

I think you need medical help

So do I (think that, not that I need medical help lol)

LimeKiwi · 03/06/2019 20:04

Very bloody good point

placemats · 03/06/2019 20:09

Oh limekiwi

You too? It's too much. This love and concern for me. I may faint.

I'm conflicted though. Whilst I do love a lime, a kiwi brings out an allergic reaction.

The dichotomy!

What's a woman to do?

Holdthedamndoor · 03/06/2019 20:09

It can move on. But I can also refer to the original point of the thread too. Which was nothing more than about berating women.

You may find this more interesting (I do find it interesting) but i also find the physiology of women hating women, who also claim to be feminists and cant see their own misogyny.

Because no matter how much I agree with certain points of tours, I don't with others. And turning this is into talking about gender constructs actually just give bigots (not you some of the other posters on the thread) more help to fortify their argument.

I also think gender constructs arent that useful here. Because, as I said, while we can acknowledge we are influenced. We still can then make a choice of our own.

The talk of patriachy and gender constructs in this converstation, for me, is reducing women into mindless drones that cant make a decision for ourselves if we tried. Which we are not

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 03/06/2019 20:10

Because there's so many times you can beat a dead dog with a stick, before it becomes pointless and boring.

And tbh without Bertrand,Eryth and a few others the thread would've been long dead, with the occasional "i like my nails" "no,long nails suck".

Now if that's what you're up for, fair enough and I'll bow out as well.
But expanding the thread in a more useful, informative and general way is not a bad thing.

Holdthedamndoor · 03/06/2019 20:11

Because there's so many times you can beat a dead dog with a stick, before it becomes pointless and boring

Then bow out. Or start a new thread on that discussion.

LimeKiwi · 03/06/2019 20:13

Definitely agree with this.

The talk of patriachy and gender constructs in this converstation, for me, is reducing women into mindless drones that cant make a decision for ourselves if we tried. Which we are not

Exactly.
This thread is certainly illuminating some posters, isn't it?
Also interesting as in I feel the need to do my first EVER grey rock at one lol Grin

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 03/06/2019 20:14

Then bow out.

Fair enough. Have fun Wine

Holdthedamndoor · 03/06/2019 20:15

I'm already there. Come join me, I have tea, coffee and some biscuits in the cupboard Wink

DecomposingComposers · 03/06/2019 20:15

Hence why they are so keen to move the discussion on I think.

The talk of patriachy and gender constructs in this converstation, for me, is reducing women into mindless drones that cant make a decision for ourselves if we tried. Which we are not

A million times this. I can't get my head round why anyone who is a feminist would want to reduce women to puppets incapable of independent thought? I honestly don't get it. How is that, in any way beneficial to women?

Holdthedamndoor · 03/06/2019 20:16

YourSarcasmIsDripping to be clear I am not trying to push you off the thread. I am simply pointing out that if a thread isnt interesting you, you have no requirement to stay.

DecomposingComposers · 03/06/2019 20:17

This thread is certainly illuminating some posters, isn't it?

I've been trying to think of a way to say just this. You've hit the nail on the head!

BertrandRussell · 03/06/2019 20:18

“can't get my head round why anyone who is a feminist would want to reduce women to puppets incapable of independent thought?”

I suppose I don’t UnderstNd why it’s helpful not to acknowledge how we all, women and men, are manipulated and influenced by societal expectations and commercial interests and how they are part of the patriarchy.
