I'm starting to think that a vast number of people believe that it's possible to change sex

Language is very powerful.
For many years people have heard about 'sex-change surgery' & people having 'changed sex'

I wonder what Tanni GT made of it.

I hope Tanni is talking to other sportswomen like Martina and Sharron.

As someone who was born with a disability, I imagine she's baffled by the idea of people with healthy bodies insisting they were 'born in the wrong body'. If anyone could claim that, surely it's disabled people like her - but she just got on with life and achieved great things with the body she was born with.

I wonder if TRAs think that disabled people have 'cis privilege' because they weren't 'born in the wrong body'.

Tanni Grey-Thompson has expressed concern previously about the effects of allowing transwomen into women's sport, and she thinks we should be allowed to discuss this issue.

The booklet is available via Standing for Women website.

Thanks for the link. Happy to buy booklets as a fundraiser but for lobbying purposes freely accessible resources will be needed so that the recipients can pass them around etc. Using paper copies only are in my experience quite unreliable for getting seen by the right person at the right time unfortunately. Fair enough though that they are charging, funds are needed to be raised.

Who was the MP that did turn up I would like to say thank you?

R0wantrees · 17/05/2019 21:52

David Davies (not the former Brexit minister, the other one!)

David Davies had hosted the last session in the houses of parliament too.
You know, the one that got thrown out of Millwall football club because they didn't have the balls to stand up to the TRA.

FemaleAndLearning · 17/05/2019 22:25

Thank you I will look him up as I don't know him. I'm quite new to all this since the GRA consultation. There is so much to read and learn it can be quite overwhelming and hard to focus. Mostly I just feel helpless, but I like all the good ideas on the chat to be more active.

He also organised and spoke in a debate in the house of commons (not in the main chamber) on self Id. He was the only one who spoke against self id and lots of woke women from the other three parties spoke against him. I thought he did really well. He described himself as a libertarian Conservative so I assume he is coming to this from the point of view of individual rights conflicting with each other, freedom of speech etc. He's not a feminist. He's the only one though (still) and he must be brave.

David Davies, Joan McAlpine and Joanne Cherry have been so important putting their heads above the parapet and raising concerns. They have put up with horrific abuse because of it and I'm so grateful to them for their bravery.

I think DD is coming at it from a different angle than feminism, not sure if it's conflict of interest and he wants fairness or because of the impact on children and young people.

Tanni has always come across as very level headed and able to speak her own opinions. A while back concerns were raised regarding the paralympics and personal care - that olympians should have the right to same sex care staff not gender. Not sure if this had anything to do with Tanni.

I work for an MP.

I saw nothing at all about this meeting anywhere. I don’t Think his office were sent an invite or any info.

When was it announced? Diaries fill up a long time in advance..

It’s also low priority for MPs at the moment. There’s no legislation planned, so it’s not on their radar.

My MP has had around 5 people (out of about 70,000) who have ever written in about gender stuff. Compare that to hundreds of daily emails about brexit or the environment...

ChattyLion · 18/05/2019 20:39

Genetic thank you for posting. Please can you give us some tips? For getting MPs interested in their constituents’ letters about this issue. And attending meetings like this?

We can’t know how Standing for Women promoted this event to MPs or how much notice they gave in advance. Or what Lord Moonie sent around about it and to who. But it does look like there was some fall out between him and the Labour Party immediately before this event and over ‘transphobia’. Did that put Labour MPs off attending do you think?

You are right of course that there isn’t an imminent Parliamentary vote on this issue and we have a political crisis on our hands with Brexit but imminent votes isn’t the only reason that MPs turn up to events or briefings. You’ll always get a few MPs interested in something that turn up any time that issue that they are interested in, comes up. It doesn’t really make sense that only one MP and only one Peer show up to something of fundamental importance to constituents which they get a post bag about and which is being covered by the Times, Mail and Telegraph. This is topical.

And even when there was a government consultation on the GRA (www.gov.uk/government/consultations/reform-of-the-gender-recognition-act-2004) MPs weren’t replying to lots of us who were writing to them on this issue and many of them still won’t do so, as women continue to write. Why not?

Since then we’ve had the front page of the Times (links in my posts above on this thread if anyone wants to see them) showing that UK kids are being given unevidenced permanent medication by the NHS and apparently without professionals being given sufficient time to explore other underlying issues that could be causing their feelings of confusion or dysphoria.

There have been several local and national grassroots-organised events to discuss these issues and a lot of women writing to their MPs with their concerns and still only one MP seems to be taking this seriously.

Some of us also emailed our MPs when the details were put up on this board about this recent Lord Moonie meeting. And yet we are told that only one MP showed up to this event in the Lords and we don’t know that any other MPs even sent anyone from their office if they were unable to attend. Out of 650 MPs. It seems very odd when we know MPs do get contacted about this.

Very happy to see this in the Times today though we need more MPs to get this impartial investigation of facts started. One MP is nowhere near enough. Why are more MPs not seeing the obvious problems with treating vulnerable kids in this unregulated way?

The Webberleys’ MP, David Davies, said: “Sex-change hormones have permanent consequences and handing them out to children is wrong. The government should investigate how to stop what amounts to an abuse of children.”

teawamutu · 23/05/2019 15:35

Just wanted to update - had a pretty good email from my mp, who said they'd not been able to attend due to a prior commitment, but they would make a point of reading up on the issues and would make urgent representations to the women and equalities minister around child protection and safeguarding. Also invited me to come to the next constituency surgery to discuss in person.
