I can't access it as not a subscriber but thanks Debbie for promoting trans gender trend's pack.

Getting this into the TES is very much needed.

I can sit and link to www.transgendertrend.com/ all day and am happy so to do.

DebbieInBirmingham · 13/05/2019 15:54

Thanks for the comments. I'm pleased that people are reading my piece and finding it helpful. I am writing as a teacher from a teacher's perspective so it doesn't cover everything. However, I hope I made the distinction between sex and gender clearly, and developed the crucial dilemma between affirmation and safeguarding. That - incidently - was inspired by Claire Graham and her superb talk that she gave last year. I have learned so much from Claire and I value her wisdom.

Thanks for noticing the digs that I get from some of my fellow trans people, @NeurotrashWarrior Sadly, I'm used to it. I sense so much fear behind their comments. But when they have not been used to challenge (or engaging with the challenge), my arguments may seem threatening to them.

But that is an aside. I wrote the piece because I am worried about the direction of policy. Unquestioning affirmation is - in my view - a disaster not only for girls but also trans-identified children.

Oops I just clicked the top result and it just so happened to be TT.

NeurotrashWarrior · 13/05/2019 16:01

Finger slippage!

The reaction to two lines in the piece is astonishing.

  1. "In my view, it is the Transgender Trend guide that is most consistent with the Technical Guidance for Schools in England (13) issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) when it considered the needs of trans girls." - I then quote the EHRC guidance as evidence. “A suitable alternative [to the changing room designated for their own sex] might be to allow the [trans] pupil to use private changing facilities, such as the staff changing room or another suitable space.”
  1. "In short, school leaders who wish to be fully informed and stay within the law and best practice may wish to consider the Transgender Trend guide when formulating local policy." I would have thought that to be fully informed, a teacher would read as widely as possible.

Meanwhile this one has been ignored.
"It should be noted that we all have a sex and this is defined by our biology. The female sex typically has the capacity to produce gametes (reproductive cells) called ova or eggs, while the male sex typically produces smaller, usually motile, gametes called sperm. There are only two types of gamete and therefore sex is binary."

I do wonder how much of the reaction has come from people who have not read the piece.

I'm a well meaning person.
I stumbled on TT website many times today...

Absolutely. And thank you for writing this piece, Debbie, but I am going to ask again - isn't it important for gender-cricital transwomen to be avoiding the use of female-only spaces, both to lead by example and so as not to give less well-intentioned males an excuse by setting a precedent?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 13/05/2019 16:23

So pleased to see that this is still gaining traction. The more people who actually read the TT guidance, the better. Thank you Debbie.

I'm going to get the TES and send it to the kids school.

And I'll back that up with the TT guidence. I haven't felt confident enough before but this is great.

Genderfreelass · 13/05/2019 19:56

Good idea Katvon, if the y receive the TES article soon with TT information they will hopefully be more inclined to read the TT info.

HazardGhost · 13/05/2019 22:59

Very thoughtful article Debbie. I'm sorry that being a teacher and writing about things which impact teaching and student safeguarding somehow adds up to you being a target for hate. We live in interesting times!

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2019 12:06

Apparently this is a big turn around for the TES.

A TES forum poster was having their links to the transgender trend pack in forum posts removed last year by mods.

Glad someone has come to their senses.

OP posts:
KatvonHostileExtremist · 14/05/2019 12:18

Wow neuro

What a turn around indeed. And quite rightly given the TRA push for immediate affirmation / pubity blockers / sex change hormones is based on sparkle gender fairy theories rather than large scale peer reviewed evidence.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 14/05/2019 12:25

That's interesting Neurotrash. I assumed they were simply silent rather than actively opposed.

Given the public information about all the safeguarding breaches and the recent Transgender Trend analysis of all the trans toolkits that advocate the wholesale removal of the rights of groups of children, especially girls, it's becoming increasingly hard for educators to ignore the real issues.

I agree. And TES seem to be realising - they not only commissioned this article but also paid out for legal checking of it.

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2019 13:09

This is really very significant given that stonewall have labelled TT pack as transphobic; schools are going to have to do some serious critical analysis especially if they are stonewall champions.

OP posts:
NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2019 13:15

Quite Truth.

I don't go on the TES forums but have occasionally had a look.

I did notice last year that at best posters were completely missing the point around things like gender stereotypes (eg re the bbc no more girls and boys documentary) and at worst, GC / biologists' voices were being silenced, posts deleted heavy moderation.

Obviously Columists such as Natasha Devon were regular contributors. I wonder how many U turns we will see over the next year or so, especially with the SRE curriculum coming in.

Another reason why this is extremely well timed.

OP posts:
NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2019 13:18

I'm assuming that the forums are tied to the actual paper and articles however. They are on the website.

I wonder if the actual Times has had any influence re the various pieces over the year.

OP posts:
truthisarevolutionaryact · 14/05/2019 13:35

I wonder whether the NAHT (Headteacher's union) have also got cold feet? They produced some truly awful trans guidelines with a great fanfare back in 2017. These have now completely disappeared and they just have 'behind a paid subscription' LGBT inclusion guidelines - written with Stonewall so presumably the legal guidance will be incorrect.

Fortunately Mumsnet was on the case and there's a useful summary on this thread:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3111547-New-batshit-NAHT-guidelines-on-trans-in-schools

Comes to something when a Headteacher's union is too embarrassed to publish their inclusion guidelines openly!

NeurotrashWarrior · 14/05/2019 13:39

Ooh interesting Truth.

I know I'm a broken record but this is a significant piece.

For those who don't know; the TES is half news, half teaching job adverts. Busy time of year for teaching job changes.
